Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

Went to Asda in Thornaby last night. There was this woman outside trying to sell the big issue. Never seen her there before (she was stood where that busker often is). She looked East European, and was dressed in a headscarf and shawl type thing.

Anyway, as i`m coming out, a mobile goes off and she pulls it out of her pocket and starts jabbering away. FFS! I thought big issue sellers were supposed to be people who couldn`t afford a roof over their heads, yet this one can afford to have a mobile!

I don`t normally give to sellers/beggars, and this has reinforced my belief that it`s right not to do so.

maybe it was a phone order?

re: Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

I'm pretty sure I could get a payg for a decent price and recieving calls is free.

They really should be made to take a means test. And fined if necessary.

why dont Big Issue do mail order - they woudl save a fortune on distribution...

If she was selling the Big Issue, she wasn't begging though, was she?

Did this Big Issue seller have any form of identification on them - a permit from the magazine or a orange bib clearly stating they are an offical BI seller. If not shop them to the mag and /or the police. You can't walk throuh manc city centre without being approached by one of the sellers. It stops them begging I suppoe.

The thing that gets me about The Big Issue is despite being extremely well known their circulation remains small. If they tidied up the appearance of their sales force I think they would sell truckloads!

I buy it, but to be honest, it's a crap read.

The social have probably bought her the phone in case she gets homesick and needs to phone home !!!

Even ET didn't have his own home and he was far miles away. Well to be fair to the lad he did turn up here pre-mobile phone era

And despite being an illegal alien he didn't go begging on the street. Although he was a squatter. US immigration laws must have been very lax back then.

Don't mind buying a Big Issue but what I do object to is those teams of people trying to persuade you into signing up for a direct debit on the street.

There's a different charity at it every week where I work - if I signed up for everything I'd be skint!

Plus most of your donation surely goes on paying their salaries - they all seem to be public school eduated twenty somethings - thought charity was all about giving up your time for free?!

Yes I'm sure she is an asylum seeker or immigrant, all head-scarve wearers are.

MontTeettyBlanc, they are called 'chuggers'.

I was going to say before it was sort of mentioned by trodbitch, if I was homeless one of the first things I'd buy with any money I had would be a cheap (£15) PAYG mobile. As he said, incoming calls are free and being homeless and vulnerable a mobile would be a priceless personal safety acquisition if nothing else.

"How the fook would you charge it up???"

I presume at your home. You don't think all big issue sellers are homeless, do you?

TheSmogMonster Posted on 12/4 12:22
re: Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

Big Issue actually loan high risk sellers mobile phones and will check up on them periodically.

Big issue sellers are at least doing something other then feeling sorry for themselves, so I buy it, even if as Mick says, its pap.

re: Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

I had some trouble with such a person only last week.

I put 50p in this chap's bowl, and blow me down ... if I didn't see the fooker eating some crisps and a dried up crust for his lunch only 10 minutes later!!

Needless to say, I attacked the miserable fooker, and as I grappled with him to regain my 50p I told him that if he could afford to eat, then he wasn't getting my money.

That sorted him.

Unbelievable really, the amount of work shy dodgers there are out there who just live of benefits and we have a go at people who are working to help themselves.

Trod - why 'chuggers'?

towz Posted on 12/4 12:26
re: Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

I know. How do these people expect folk to retain their comfortable middle-class existences with their extortionate practice of charging £1.40 or something for a magazine that comes out once a month that they probably sell about 10 of a day.

re: Beggar Taking The P!ss at Thornaby Asda

I must have been half-asleep earlier as I meant to post why:

CHarity mUGGERS

I got one at the door last week who rather than tell me what he wanted tried to engage in a chit chat about "how was I". Sorry pal, you knocked on MY door, tell me what you want. In fact, when I said "What do you want, mate?" he gave me a look as if to say "oooh, how ruuuuuuuude", so he got told to do one.
