Not going next season

I'll get berated by the fan police but I'm fed up, of football and of footballers who can't be arsed. There's plenty of other things I can do on a Saturday instead.

corruptbiggins Posted on 15/4 11:56
re: Not going next season

doesn't bother me what you do, just make sure it's for the right reasons, i.e. not because you expected to be entertained every match or that the beer taste crap (which it does mind).

re: Not going next season

Not a decision I think I'll ever make Cobain but I can see exactly where you're coming from. I don't think it is too strong to say that we may be witnessing the death of football in the not too distant future.

part time supporter! yes its been a disappointing season but we arnt gonna get relegated.

While trying not to speak for cobain, he doesn't mention success or not, relegation or not in that post. Just seems like he is fed up of them having his eyes out.

haha, I knew you'd respond after my comment yesterday.

We've had plenty of seasons like this sasboro and I've kept on renewing but I'm just so fed up of football in general mainly.

re: Not going next season

sounds like you are just bored with football and getting into your mid to late 20s and moving on to other interests. happens to a lot of people.

re: Not going next season

i won't be going next season, fallen out of love with the game it's been destroyed by sky with the over the top hype and the greed and bling bling culture of the players. i loved the days we played at ayrsome, i know the team was rubbish then but i felt a part of something much more honest feel about the game in those days

Sceptic_Frank Posted on 15/4 12:08
re: Not going next season

I don't think it's about us maybe getting relegated or not performing well. I think it's that even if we were to play to the maximum of our abilities every game we would still have practically no chance of winning anything.

Title race: Chelsea v Man U
Probable FA cup final: Chelsea v Man u
Possible Champions League final: Chelsea v Man U
Carling Cup final: Chelsea v Arsenal (oooh an exciting variation!)

That is near farcical domination. There is a growing feeling that it's all a bit futile. I'm not saying that, in my lifetime, I ever thought Boro had a chance of winning the league but there was a time when a team could come from the lower tier and mount a realistic challenge. That is an impossibility now.

This was the first season in 15 I haven't had a season ticket and I haven't missed it anywhere near as much as I thought I would.

re: Not going next season

I agree Scoea about the death of football... the annoying thing is that Sky think its an amazing game with only a few problems.

Andy Gray is forever going on about how great the game is. But his views are always directed towards the top 4 and its a rip off for the rest of the league.

Revol_Tees Posted on 15/4 12:09
re: Not going next season

I feel exactly the same and have pretty much decided that I'm not renewing either. I said the same thing last season, but this time it's for real. I've decided I'll probably go to a handful of games next season and that I'd much rather pick and choose, instead of paying a massive lamp sum in return for something I don't really enjoy half of the time.

re: Not going next season

Every fan has the right to decide what to do next season and I dont think Cobain will be alone in choosing to give it a miss next season.
My Saturdays used to belong to the Boro also, but for what we get at a rip off rate compared to other countries I get more pleasure out of playing golf these days and taking in the odd match in when i fancy with the Family.
We have 3 season tickets between us and we have decided not to renew them - never mind!
Well done to the greedy gits who are obviously killing the game

The only way to save football in this country is for everyone to cancel their Sky subscriptions. Obviously this is not going to happen. Ten years hence the top level of the domestic game will be League 1 level after Sky and the big clubs decamp to Europe.

re: Not going next season

In my 11 years of watching and supporting properly I have seen 3 teams win the title and not one other team look like they are going to pull off an upset and win it (barring maybe Liverpool). That is absolutly wank. What's the point?

re: Not going next season

Come on Cobain - we need people like you at the game every week - building the atmosphere making it a special place to be. It was a dismal defeat yesterday but there have been some superb highlights over the past few seasons.

And.. how come I don't see you at many gigs anymore? I'll hold my hands up and admit I don't go to Play much anymore - but we need you at more gigs.

Let's put it in perspective the local music scene is better than ever before - in my time which stretches back over 20 years. We've had the longest run in the top flight of football in half a century.

I'm eternally grateful I don't live somewhere like.. Stoke. But to continue the music and football scene we need you Cobain. Do the right thing, your area needs you. Don't turn your back on us now.

"The only way to save football in this country is for everyone to cancel their Sky subscriptions."

What about the people who don't have Sky just to watch football?

re: Not going next season

If all the non-big clubs stuck together something could be done (see link). It never happens because clubs like Newcastle think they belong in a "big five", and because those running the clubs are attached to the big money lifestyle. Divided, ruled.

And put our auld fella out of a job?? Have a word. He's got a wife and 2 kids to feed!

Shyt theory though. With all these new cash injections from Sky, why don't Clubs slash prices?? Any revenue that would have been lost from ticket sales, would surely be made up with the dosh from Mr Murdoch!

re: Not going next season

Dear Rob,

Boro fan who has travelled far and wide with the club for years on end, me also.
Enough is enough isnt it and these decisions from fans deciding not to renew next year cant be some surprise to you, its been coming for quite some time now.
Season by season, our fan base along with other clubs is deminishing in numbers for obvious reasons.
Who in their right minds want to go and see also rans every season, Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal and Liverpool have the whole scene to themselves becasue of money.
Which is ruining the game, we as the general public are being priced out of.
In reality those top four clubs along with Newcastle and Sunderland would be the only games that would attract me back next season, unless we do a cup run which would only probably mean in Boro getting to a Quarter or Semi Final ????
Will Blackburn beat Chelsea today ? I would be shocked with many others if they did, and yesterdays game of Man U v Watford was over before the Kick off.
Good Luck fella

"What about the people who don't have Sky just to watch football?"

There's plenty of crap to watch on Freeview. You can get all the shopping channels 'n' that. Should keep them happy.

jimmyrav Posted on 15/4 16:01
re: Not going next season

Got to say Rob in response to your impassioned plea to Cobain, the majority of the highlights over the last few seasons have come in cup games.

You dont need a season ticket for those, you can get a ticket anyway.

I think Cobains view is representative of lots of supporters.

I have had my ST for 20 years and am seriously debating not to go.

I wont miss the football, but I will misds the social aspect.

number_10 Posted on 15/4 16:18
re: Not going next season

I made the decision for this year.

I've picked and chosen my games, and I can't say i've really missed any i'd have loved to have seen (apart from Chelsea at home).

I'm not getting my season ticket back anytime soon, and I will not fork out 30 quid (or near enough) to watch us play teams like Villa, Bolton and the like. It isn't value for money, and the atmospheres are crap because so many fans are priced out of the game, and when there's only 500 or so away fans, where is the banter?

The atmosphere is flat as well, at least when the football used to be crap in the past, there was still the whole matchday experience to fall back on and enjoy. There isn't even that anymore, it's plastic fantastic crap.

The prices for tickets need to come down. As I said, I won't fork out 30 quid for a one off game against mid table opposition. But say, if the tickets were 15 quid.............I probably would, certainly more than I have this season. I wouldn't be the only one either. Clubs need to realise this.

Whelan is spot on with the distribution of wealth as well. It's wiping out any real competition unless a rich sugar daddy makes a club his new plaything and throws money at it right left and centre.

The game needs to be given back to the fans. Only England has lost it, the rest of europe haven't priced their own fans out of the game, why should we?

re: Not going next season

its not surprising that after 10 years at the riversdie of 5 cup finals and a couple of semi finals, with a season of p0retty average stuff many people are bored of it now. the honeymoon of a new stadium is well and truely over and within 5 years we will be back to ayresome park crowds. I think our crowds are only 3 years behind blackburns. Even in a few years time the prices are cheaper i feel fans will make someother excuse for not going. Watching football is like most things. people come and go and some grow out of watching football.as you get older your circumstances change you have other things to do in yoru spare time or other responsibilities. way things are going i can see us getting relegated within 4 years

re: Not going next season

I don't think the prices will go down anyway. The club will just freeze them, and claim it's a good deal for the fans, or put some spin on it.

captain_flaptain Posted on 15/4 16:36
re: Not going next season

We either need about 16 russians to come over and buy all the teams and give them money, or make the top teams have their own leageu. Honestly nobody below the "big 4" can compete for the title.

AtomicLoonybin Posted on 15/4 16:43
re: Not going next season

No we don't. We need a European Super League. the gig four can fook off then and enjoy their closed competition. Let's see how Arsenal and Liverpool feel when they're finish bottom half every year, and facing another away day at Bayern Munich for the honour of not finishing bottom.

Then we might have an English top division that gets back to a real scrap between several teams, one of whom would be us. OK, the 'quality' would be less but then hey, who wants to see Ronaldo torturing a pub back four like he does week on week anyway?

bandito Posted on 15/4 18:14
re: Not going next season

Cobain, didnt think you'd ever chuck in the towel but I know exactly how you feel. Assess the situation after we've picked up 6 points against Man U and Liverpool

:)

re: Not going next season

It's gradually been building over the last few years. I first got bored with watching other teams play. After old trafford and Ronaldo's dive it woke me up fully to the fact the game's rotten to the core. Then as soon as I realised that I thought what's the point. Then I see my own team take their foot off the gas yet again (they only "work" 9 months of the year).

Rob, I'm trying to save for Thailand in the summer so not many gigs lately, that and there's no real indie night with bands on anymore, Plays a joke these days. I did manage to see Bob Fischer in Libertys a while back. A sterling royal variety performance.

re: Not going next season

Packed my ST in a couple of years ago.

On Sat afternoon I was at the top of Roseberry Topping with my wife and 4 year old son. When we reached the top he turned round and said "Daddy, now I've climbed the volcano I can do anything".

Far better memories from that than watching over-paid, over-rated, egotistical footballers pretend to try whilst trying to wring every last penny from the fans.

Schmutz. Flying in the face of popular opinion, I agree with you. Music and football ARE rubbish. You're far better off saving for a holiday.

Soon you'll be staying in because you have the mortgage a car loan and a hefty credit-card bill to pay.

Welcome to the world. It's great.
