I disagree. Downing doesnt fit in with the rest of the side, We dont have a right winger, we dont have forwards who are good in the air/get on the end of crosses. Downing is the most prolific crosses of the ball in the premiership, yet he has a pathetic amount of assists. This is due to his lack of pace, due to this he barely ever beats his man and puts the ball in early where Yakubu and Viduka are NOT in the box. We need midfielders who will play the ball to the forwards and get ahead of them and play in short passes, OR a winger who can get to the byline and pull the ball back when the strikers and other midfielders are in the box. Downing is neither of these. I am not questioning his undoubted ability, I am suggesting he doesnt not fit into the rest of the side and it would be far easier and profitable to replace Downing on the left than get 2 new forwards, a right winger and maybe 2 new forwards. When he does go people will moan that we have left him go when he goes to a side where his talents will be fully utilised but at the moment and for the long run I cant see him being like that for boro. It would be better for him and the team for him to leave as long as we can get a suitable replacement. | |
