Looking at getting a 2nd pc in the house so thinking about getting a router. Anybody got any advice about what they are like and any recommendations for any decent ones? I'm on NTL broadband so does anyone know if there router package is any good?

Do you mean a Wireless Access Point, so that the PC's can talk to each other and to the Internet?

I'm not really an expert on them at all! basically just want one so i can have internet on the other pc, not fussed about networking the 2 of them together or anything.

You'll have to have them both on the same network to allow them to share the internet access. The only alternative without a router to do that would be to connect one pc to the cable modem, and the other pc to that pc. It means you would need to leave the cable modem pc on all the time. I've got a linksys router (can't recommend them highly enough) and it is next to my cable modem. My girfriends desktop pc is plugged into the router with a cable (as is my xbox) and my laptop and pda access the web via the wireless signal.

So they are relaible then trod? I have just heard that a lot of them drop connection a fair bit. How much are we looking at for one of these linksys routers?

But at the moment you have NTL Broadband connected to a single PC, and there is no 'port' available for a 2nd connection.... Your choice is wired or wireless, if you don't want to run a cable then you need wireless - I would suggest you get a Linksys Wireless Access Point like WRT54GL-UK the and a wireless network card (or a USB dongle if not a Laptop) You plug the WRT54GL-UK into the Cable Modem and use a wired port for 1st system, plug the card or dongle into the 2nd system and connect wirelessly. Easy and quick!

Ive got a inexq ISW055t which I got for nowt from work but I think they can be had for about £40, I found some really bad right ups after Id got it but its never given one bit of trouble. NTL Broadband cable into modem, cable out of modem into router, cable out of router into pc downstairs, upstairs pc uses wireless connection.

ste, sorry I was away. I've personally had no issues at all and I know a few people who have them and swear by them.

Make sure you get one that is compatable with cable modems as they are different models for cable and ADSL.

As Trodbitch says, a Linksys router is the dogs... it's the domestic arm of Cisco. You won't have any bother with one of those. We standardise on these at my company for home users for that reason. If you want to take a chance on fannying about, I have a Barricade that you can have for nowt....but take my advice..buy a WRT54GS if you are on NTL.

Cheers smig but i think i'd rather pay for one that's gonna be reliable. Thanks for the offer though.

No probs, just proving a point....Better getting one that works than paying less (or nothing) for one that will give you gyp. It's the old adage....you get what you pay for....(even if it is nowt)!
