re: ENGLAND V South Africa odi.

Once more unto the breach, dear friends, once more;
Or close the wall up with our English dead.
In peace there's nothing so becomes a man
As modest stillness and humility:
But when the blast of war blows in our ears,
Then imitate the action of the tiger;
Stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood,
Disguise fair nature with hard-favour'd rage;
Then lend the eye a terrible aspect;
Let it pry through the portage of the head
Like the brass cannon; let the brow o'erwhelm it
As fearfully as doth a galled rock
O'erhang and jutty his confounded base,
Swill'd with the wild and wasteful ocean.
Now set the teeth and stretch the nostril wide,
Hold hard the breath, and bend up every spirit
To his full height! On, on you noblest English!
Whose blood is fet from fathers of war-proof;
Fathers that, like so many Alexanders,
Have in these parts from morn till even fought,
And sheath'd their swords for lack of argument.
Dishonour not your mothers; now attest
That those whom you call'd fathers did beget you.
Be copy now to men of grosser blood,
And teach them how to war. And you, good yeomen,
Whose limbs were made in England, show us here
The mettle of your pasture; let us swear
That you are worth your breeding; which I doubt not;
For there is none of you so mean and base
That hath not noble lustre in your eyes.
I see you stand like greyhounds in the slips,
Straining upon the start. The game's afoot:
Follow your spirit; and upon this charge
Cry 'God for Harry! England and Saint George!'

re: ENGLAND V South Africa odi.

Even though we are pish poor i have a funny feeling that we might win this one. We need Vaughan and Strauss to score runs though and not a laboured 30 odd off 60 odd balls either. It needs to be brisk, and hopefully for a change Pietersen won't come in with us about 20-2 as has been the case most of the time. This could be Flintoff's chance with the bat as they don't have a spinner to speak of.

I think we should bowl first personally. SA would have to lean more on their spinner if they bowled second and as they haven't got one this would be a big advantage to us. Early on i think there will be a bit in the pitch for the seamers.

I think we need a very big score if we bat first. SA have very quick scorers in their side who can knock out a half century in no time. Close to 300 would be very nice. Probably wishful thinking though.

Ridiculous start. Are South Africa going to only play a 45 over game? 9 for 1 off 7.3 overs. Our opening bowlers only need to bowl a bad ball each in their opening over and they are up with our run rate and they'll have another 5 overs to get ahead.

Players like Vaughn and Bell are far too defensive batsmen to be playing one-day cricket in my opinion. It isn't their natural game to come out swinging. They simply shouldn't be playing. Poor team selection once again.

Pietersen - well he had a stinker today and that's probably cost us the game but he's still the best batsman we've got.

gazzastrip Posted on 17/4 16:59
re: ENGLAND V South Africa odi.

All that happens in this England innings is the fault of Vaugan and his slow coach ultra cautious approach at the begining of the innings.

We will be out of the world cup because we have persisted with vaughan as opener in the hope rather than expectation that he would find some form.

We are completely inflexible as a team and seem scared to try to up the ante with the exception of pieterson. The slow starts put pressure on the whole of the rest of the team and it is time for a change, i am afraid fletcher and vaughan have had their day!

Vaughan

'Looking to take the positives out of this, we are still in the World Cup. While there are some things we must improve on we are close to being a good team (all we need are 3 or 4 more good batsmen, a couple of fast bowlers who can bowl line and length and a world class all-rounder). We were a bit unlucky to win the toss , forcing us to bat on a lively pitch.

we also excelled ourselves over the tournament, playing above our world ranking!!'

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near

Smile, what's the use of crying?

Mahmood then produces a sublime moment on the point boundary by jogging across to Kallis's gentle cut and booting it accidentally over the rope for four, in the manner of a clown entertaining children.

I managed to get this read out on Test Match Special earlier.

"Its just like watching England play at the football world cup - constipated, passionless, stifled.
Over coached , under managed.
Over paid and under delivered.
do away with central contracts.

We have been awful throughout and do not deserve to be in the semis.The fact we were still in with a shout today is unbelievable.

Our top order needs a complete overhaul, maybe not just for ODIs. And that includes our captain.

Moxon was a good coach for Durham, and did well, galvanising a team in his own mould. God help him at Headingley, when every man and his dog, will be having there tuppenceworth, into how the biggest county in England should be ran !!! Funny how all those "smaller" counties, have for years out performed them !!! Including little DURHAM.
