Thieves take war memorial Apr 17 2007 By Evening Gazette Police today condemned thieves who stole a war memorial commemorating lives lost during the two World Wars. The 4ft by 3ft metal plate was prised off at All Saints’ Church in Middlesbrough town centre overnight. Father Glyn Holland discovered the theft today. He was devastated. He said: “This is a very important piece of history and is the only war memorial in the centre of Middlesbrough which relates to local people. “It may never be commemorated again.” Father Holland, also a chaplain to the British Legion, appealed for anyone who had a list of the names appearing on the memorial to come forward. A large hole has been left on the stone where the metal plaque was mounted. A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: “Police were left sickened by the callous theft and are asking the public for help in tracing those responsible.” Anyone with information is asked to call police on 01642 326326. | |

Wasn't there summat in the news last November about someone shouting Nazi obscenities at people attending a remembrance ceremony. The one that gets me is when you hear about war graves and memorials being defaced with swastikas. | |
