'Overtime'

Where I've worked in the past the management tried to prevent working over as it costs the company money. At my present company they look for work so the 'lads' can work 'over'! Which I find a little bizarre.

The management even arrange transport on a weekend because it's hard for some of the 'lads' to get to work Saturdays and Sundays.

Do people have a right to work 'overtime'?

re: 'Overtime'

It's personal choice, can't be forced on you. However certain Managers are expected to work extra hours if it's in the contract

re: 'Overtime'

Depends on their works contract I would think.

The difference between the two companies may be that one charges the customer for working over, whereas the other doesn't.

If someone wanted us to work a weekend to get a job done quickly, we would make sure we charge them through the nose for it.

re: 'Overtime'

I'm not sure that it's a 'right' as such, but it seemed to vary with different contractors I used to employ (in my terrible days as a recruitment consultant.....eurghhh). Mind you, and no disrespect to the construction trade - they do as they like. I take my effin' hat off to them :o)
