Hurrah! Very chilly this morning as I walked past. But very bright also. Could be a bit dewy early on. Making my way over there later on. Six months ago it looked like we would be in real trouble but now, who knows. A good start and anything could happen.

re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

We're gunna win the league, we're gunna win the league...

Gilespie has had a year to get used to the conditions, Gough will be rairing to go on one last swan-song. McGrath will be playing for a move. The South African Reindeer will sleigh opposition bowlers.

And Rashid will soon replace Panesar.

Champions, Champions, Champions...

re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

Top of the morning to you Ray, I'm doing fine cheers. Lets hope our new recruits get used to ENglish conditions quickly.

Famous last words but the Oval track is usually not a bad place to bat on.

Team news:

White
Sayers
Rudolph
Khan
McGrath
Rashid
Bresnan
Brophy
Gough
Gillespie
Hoggy

Well thats my prediction anyway. Possibly Wood in place of Sayers, (or Rashid or Bresnan if they decide to play an extra batsman).

I do hope we go with 4 seamers and Rashid for a bit of variety and we should have enough batting strength with 5 specialists, given Rashid, Brophy, Bresnan and Gough all bat reasonably well.

Capybara Posted on 18/4 10:10

20-1 FFS with only Durham and 'Jent' considered more outsiders. Surrey 9-2. FFS.

Day 1 report.

ray192 Posted on 19/4 8:03
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

In my opinion day 1 was about even Yorkshire got off too a terrible start then a great partnership of 190 put us in a strong position only to lose both batsman to the new ball we must hope to get at least 400 for another point then bowl on day 2 and who knows .

I await the verdict of the people who went as they will know what the wicket is playing like normally day 2 is when it's at it's best.

Capybara Posted on 19/4 8:55
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

Difficult to tell from where I was how the pitch was playing, but I think Yorkshire did pretty well to get to where they were at the close of play. When I saw T4Tomo we were both worried that we might not get to 350 having just lost Rashid and Roudolph, but Gough and, particularly, Bresnan both batted well and Gillespie took forever to get off the mark but then hit four good boundaries. The boundary on one side is quite short so there's runs to be had.

T4Tomo Posted on 19/4 10:41
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

I was there to see a bit of Brophy and then the fine stand by Jacques and Rashid and a bit of the start of Goughy and Bresnan.

AR was very scratchy until he was off the mark and had a couple of streaky edges for 4 at the start but then played very well. JR looked un-troubled throughout dealing mainly in dots and sublime strokes for 4's.

Azhar looked a handful with 2nd new ball but that apart I was struggling to see how we'd lost 4 wickets in the morning session.

Schofield got clobbered everytime he came on and Doshi? was expensive to start with but better later on - be interesting to see how effective AR is - hopefully better than those two.

Great effort to be looking at 400 given where we were at lunch, but we have a strong lower middle order as I highlighted up there somewhere.

Best thing is the confidence that partnership will give JR on debut and AR who didn't do much with the bat last year.

Why should they, when there are still over two and two thirds days remaining and they can keep on batting, as they are doing, and build up a sizable total. 486-8, 138* partnership, Gillespie 76*.

Fanfriggingtastic.

Been in meetings since start of play so hadn't seen how we were doing. Capy and I are pessimists, we were thinking 400 would be good.

200 9th wicket partnership and a Dizzy ton and as I type Bresnan on 99. Very pleased for Brez, he was saying in preseason he wanted to develop his batting to be a genuine all rounder. This will be his 1st 1st class ton I think if he gets there.

Cmon Yorkshire.

What's the weather doing down there?

If it clouds over like it is up here we will be laughing.

We need to skittle em and make em follow on or this has draw written all over it.

Capybara Posted on 19/4 15:27
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

Bright sunny day. As I said up there, there's a short boundary on the one side. It'll be fizzing over the outfield today. Might wander down again later.

T4Tomo Posted on 19/4 16:57
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

Bright and sunny and the ball is fizzing about. surrey 126-1 off 31. Younis and Rashid are twirling away, Bresnan hasn't had a bowl.

Celestron Posted on 19/4 17:37

172-1 41.4 overs...unless something dramatic happens then it's looking like a draw.

Haven't read through the whole thread (was away from t'internet yesterday watching Boro and ice hockey (tv and live in that order)) but I am very happy now that proper cricket is back and hopefully we can forget about this pyjama stuff.

I found that there is live commentary on BBC London (link on the BBC Sport -> cricket web site).

Celestron Posted on 20/4 9:04
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

No doubt Rain will not be far away..Surrey 290 and 325 but before we can knock off the 20 odd runs to win it will rain....sound familiar?.

Capybara Posted on 20/4 9:09
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

Don't think rain is forecast and the cloud is quite high but the sun hasn't broken through yet. Didn't manage to get down yesterday but had beer with a couple of Surrey members immediately afterwards. There was much chuntering among the members at the end apparently. The fact that the night watchman was stumped suggests they might have had a point

The fact they lost a wicket after the nightwatchman was out amused me. RAmps is still there and clarke and Azhar are no mugs so there is still some work to do. Cloud cover should help our pace bowlers. Hoggy with the new ball should be a handful

If I wasn't 3500 miles away, I would pop down as well.

I am back in blighty the week after next so will hopefully pop down to the Rose Bowl to watch us.

387 ahead now - Good to hear the "Yorkshire, Yorkshire" chants coming over the airwaves. That's not you is it Capy?

Sayers on 53 now.

Capybara Posted on 20/4 16:04

152 up now, Chalky on 89* - the convict bad luck number (13 from a hundred).

At least Goughy is a bowler so should have a good understanding of how much time is needed on this track. Hoepfully Adil will sort them out.

Morning Raymondo...we need quick wickets to put some pressure on Surrey and we have gotten off to a good start. I would love another couple before lunch but it is a good wicket and if a couple of batsmen get in then it might be difficult getting the win...it could well be a close run thing before time runs out..fingers crossed.

Morning Raymondo...22 points from our opening game achieved with total dominance over Surrey from first ball to last and we are top of the league to boot...where did you go yesterday? I assumed that you were nipping out for a few minutes, but not to worry I got the last seven wickets with my gentle medium pacers. Next up are the Mackems on Wednesday...are you starting a new thread for this game or are you going to drag up your longstanding 800 poster Yorkshie v Durham thread from last season which keeps making a occasional appearance?.

Capybara Posted on 23/4 9:02
re: Surrey V YORKSHIRE.

'A FMTTM Mention!!' Thanks 7

Got down there just as Brophy was out. The Surrey members were grumbling that they didn't declare at that point. When I saw how straightforward batting seemmed, it seemed reasonable to bat on for a bit. The Surrey batsmen seemed in no trouble at all until Rashid came on so I thought that, even with such a high total to chase, Surrey might make a game of it. I was wrong!
