Morning all, weather in Leeds:

damp and very overcast.

We need to bowl first today - Hoggy and Gough will have the ball moving more than Shakira's hips in these conditions.

Yorkshire team to face Durham in County Championship
No Anthony McGrath, and I see the Yorkshire website still thinks we play in the Liverpool Victoria County Championship. Tought it was the LV County Championship now

Tuesday, 24th April 2007
On Wednesday 25th April Headingley Carnegie Stadium welcomes Durham for the 4-day Liverpool Victoria County Championship match. Yorkshire have started the season with two wins from two matches and Darren Gough and the boys will be giving their all to keep the victorious run going.

C White
J Sayers
J Rudolph
Y Khan
A Gale
G Brophy (W/k)
A Rashid
T Bresnan
D Gough (Cpt)
J Gillespie
M Hoggard

Deon Kruis, who limped off in Sunday's Friends Provident victory against Nottinghamshire has suffered a grade 2 left hamstring strain and will miss the next 4 to 6 weeks of the season. Anthony McGrath, who missed the Notts match with a chest infection is being rested for the Durham match. His health will be re-assessed on Friday before a decision is made on whether he is fit to travel to Edinburgh for Sunday's match against Scotland.

The visiting Durham side will be chosen from the following squad of 12:

M Di Venuto
W Smith
G Muchall
B Harmison
D Benkenstein (Cpt)
P Mustard (W/k)
G Breese
S Harmison
G Onions
O Gibson
C Thorp
K Turner

The Yorkshire County Cricket Club hopes to see as many of you as possible at Headingley Carnegie to support the team. Tomorrow's match sees the introduction of the Members swipe card entry system on each turnstile. There will be YCCC staff on the gates tomorrow morning to assist anyone who has any problems

No worries. I'm keen as MUSTARD for this today. Once our batsmen send ONIONS to the boundry the Durham faithful will be in 'tears'. Yorkshire will BREESE through the Durham top order, no HARMISON at all.

Will there be a problem? Not MUCH(at)ALL. No HARMISON will be caused to our batters.

Once victory is confrirmed those travelling fans will TURNER to the White Rose side.

Nothing tight about me Longster.

My wife wanted a new bed so I gave her the credit card. Next thing I know she has spent nearly £1500 on bed, paint, carpet, wardrobes, curtains, quilt cover, sheets...

And to prove I am not tight I am letting my retired father-in-law do the painting, lay the carpet and build the wardrobes so he doesn't get bored

Managed to catch the last hour or so after work yesterday. Harmison Major (younger brother is also playing) certainly worked up a head of steam but young Joe Sayers was absolutely solid. Dull, yes, but he had to drop anchor when Chalky was out for 3. Rudolph got a life when he was dropped in the slips but then went to the same shot a bit later.

Younis then got stuck in to show he was prepared to take on Harmison and struck a particulalrly sweet four just before close of play.

Won't be able to get there today so it's the sports bulletins for me. Come on Yorkshire!

re: YORKSHIRE V Durham (2007).

Yorkshire players Jason Gillespie, Younus Khan and Jacques Rudolph were awarded with their 1st XI county caps by Darren Gough at Headingley Carnegie Stadium yesterday.

The caps were presented by the Yorkshire captain in the tea interval on the first day of the Liverpool Victoria County Championship against Durham. The Club has awarded the three players this honour in recognition of their seniority in the Yorkshire side and it symbolizes and reinforces their status within the 1st XI.

Jason, Younus and Jacques are committed to Yorkshire. Jacques has signed a three-year contract with the county and given up the right to play for his country despite making a combined 80 international appearances for South Africa. Younus will represent Yorkshire during the month of May rather than play for his native Pakistan in the three match one-day series against Sri Lanka in Abu Dhabi and has enjoyed his time with the side so far immensely. Jason Gillespie is in his second season at Headingley Carnegie Stadium and has become an integral and very popular member of the Yorkshire team, also being a great role model for the many young bowlers that are coming through the Academy system.

Yorkshire has started the summer well and all three players have been central to the success on the field, scoring hundreds in the first week of the season.

Martyn Moxon, Director of Professional Cricket, said, “We are fortunate to have three international players of such calibre at the Club. Their performance on the field makes them great role models for everyone at the club.”

I agree Ray, it wasn't a critisism of the lad.

This is county cricket, there are 3 days to go (incl today) and its all about how to get the most runs for our 10 (or 20) wickets.

Also I suspect batting will get harder as the match goes on, so getting a good way past 300/350 is essential.

Seriously though - lets be honest - a good innings for the benefit of his team - could well be highly significant in his team winning the game.

However, if you were a Teessider going to his innings - drinking a high amount of beer - you would have ended up slaughtered having seen such a slow innings. Not quite able to see the cricket and shortly doing a strip-tease.

While Yorkshire march towards victory, down in Essex a Glamorgan player is trying to outdo Sayers feats of attritional batting.

HD Waters is currently 18 not out from 194 balls.

Makes our Sayers look like something of a reckless dasher.

Kilburn Posted on 27/4 15:45
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham (2007).

I assume only a keeper can make a stumping?

For example if a legspinner turns one past a right-hander charging down the pitch, and it turns so sharply that it goes into the hands of a first slip who then throws the stumps down with the batsman out of his ground, it would still be recorded as a run-out wouldn't it?

Capybara Posted on 27/4 15:51
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham (2007).

It's a strange one. I've had this argument before and I think I have seen it written down that it would be a run out. But surely you can only be run out if you are attempting, or have set out on, a run? Chalky's out, by the way.

Kilburn Posted on 27/4 16:07
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham (2007).

I thought that too Capy. My understanding was that the stumped dismissal type existed to distinguish that the wicket was taken due to the skill of the bowler in drawing the batsman out of his ground, and hence stumpings count as part of a bowlers figures. If that is the case, the (admittedly very rare) instance I described would seem to fall into that category.

Yorkshire win by 9 wickets.

Cappy,

No run has to be attempted for a run out to take place.

See law 38,1,(b).

Also, only a wicket keeper can perform a stumping.

Capybara Posted on 27/4 16:42
re: YORKSHIRE V Durham (2007).

That's where I will have read it then.

But, as Kilburn says up there, there could be rare occasions where the skill of the bowler draws a batsman out of his ground and the wicket is broken by a fielder other than the wicketkeeper. In such a case, the bowler would not be rewarded with the wicket, which is a shame.

stewboss Posted on 27/4 16:44
