The Guardian today

Has a nice little article in it about 'left-wingers' in football.

Link: Enjoy

Interesting stuff - hits a few buttons for me: "Going to watch a game at Arsenal's new Emirates ground feels more like attending a stadium rock concert or visiting the Ideal Home exhibition. Your relationship to everyone else inside the stadium has changed. You're united by consumer choice."

Egg. Zackerley.

There were plenty of big names supporting Labour in Scotland the other day:

Alex Ferguson
Alex McLeish
Walter Smith
Craig Levien
Ally McCoist

Phil Thompson, Peter Reid, Jack Charlton and Howard Wilkinson have all been on the campaign trail in recent years, too.

Chris Hughton was rumoured to be a member of one of the WRPs in the 80s. Which one wasn't clear from the rumour.

"... This might not exactly be up there with Paul Breitner, a West German World Cup winner in 1974, who combined a mastery of attacking full-back play with growing a bushy beard, espousing Marxism."

Chris Hughton and Tony Galvin both certainly wrote for the WRP's mysteriously funded daily paper 'Newsline' in the early-mid 80s but I am not sure that they were card carrying members of the feared armed wing of Equity.

Typical Socialist was old brown envelope Brian.

Those Scottish names mentioned were supporting the Union with the rest of the UK, not Labour, who, despite being behind the advertisement, did not have their name appear anywhere.

Except for Ferguson, who has appeared at rallies with Blair, and is quoted in the article as "At the last general election he posted a message on the government's website praising "two brilliant barnstorming speeches from Tony and Gordon"."

Disappointing to see Keith Houchen supporting the Tory in Coventry in 87.

Yeah, but in the article they weren't supporting Labour. The party that dare not speak it's name.

Great article that, especially for someone interested in football and left-wing politics like myself!
