Weather report:

a cool 12 deg, bright but very cloudy. I have a feeling it is going to be a nice day today, I think the sun will burn through the clouds.

Yorkshire look to get back to winning ways after being denied their third straight win of the LV County Championship season, instead having to settle for a draw against Hampshire. Darren Gough’s men will face Worcestershire at the Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground in the four day match which commences on 9th May.

MATCH PREVIEW

Worcestershire prop up the Division 1 table with two defeats from two matches. The Black Pears, who have ex-Yorkshire man Phil Jaques as an overseas player, gained promotion last summer after winning half their matches, but have struggled so far in 2007.
Their first game was a humbling defeat by Durham, who Yorkshire beat inside three days at the end of April. Worcestershire crumbled to 191 all out in their first innings with Durham’s three pronged pace attack of Steve Harmison, Graham Onions and Otis Gibson taking three wickets each.

In Worcestershire’s second match against new leaders Warwickshire they could not capitalise after a good start with the ball. Warwickshire recovered from being 2 down with 3 runs on the board to finish on 610 for 6 declared. That lacklustre bowling performance was followed by a brittle response with the bat - Worcestershire only managing 288 and then following on with a meagre 209.

Despite the slow start to the season Worcestershire have a useful team including a number of England's nearly-men. Yorkshire fans will recognise the names of captain Vikram Solanki, Kabir Ali and the Yorkshire-grown Gareth Batty, as well as the evergreen Graeme Hick who played 14 matches last year and finished with his county’s second highest batting average of 49. The 40-year-old top scored in the defeat to Warwickshire with 91.

However Yorkshire fans will be most familiar with Australian opener Phil Jaques. The left hander spent two successful seasons with the White Rose before making way for Darren Lehmann’s return. Since Jaques departure from Headingly Carnegie he has forced his way into the Australia squad, earning himself a central contract. Last season his average of 88 was the second highest in the country, of batsmen playing at least 4 matches. He has started this season with a 97 against Durham and a century in the Black Pears last one-day match against Nottinghamshire.
Another player Yorkshire will have to be wary of is former England prospect Kabir Ali who has started the season brightly. The 26-year-old right-arm quick bowler has already taken 22 wickets and has looked dangerous with the new ball. He may be even more effective at an overcast Headingly, which in its last match suited Matthew Hoggard and Steve Harmison.

With Michael Vaughan suffering a broken finger at the Rose Bowl, Craig White’s return to open the batting is likely to be the only change from the team that drew against Hampshire. Deon Kruis is still out with a hamstring strain.

What has pleased Yorkshire fans this season is the spread of individual success through an obviously determined side. In recent years the side has depended upon two or three players for the majority of runs and wickets. This time around it has been much more of a team game, so far.

DAVIES is apparently very tall, or SO-LANKI, if you will . JAQUES will try and PHIL his boots, but it will be ALI can do to keep his wicket.

Possible Worcestershire team:

S C Moore
P A Jaques
V S Solanki
B F Smith
G A Hick

Did I get a laugh? I thought T_C showed his head from time to time?

did they mention FMTTM again? And they were supposed to liken you to school girls!!!

Email 2:

Just had word from Ray, Capy and The Informer, they’re as excited as school girls after hearing their name on the radio!!!

We all know each other through the Middlesbrough Football message board Fly Me To The Moon (fmttm) that link will take you to the thread where we’re discussing the game today.

The guys don’t think you’ll read out something I posted earlier today, here it is:

Yorkshire will today SILLENCE the travelling Worcestershire fans, and have the home crowd shouting MOORE, MOORE, MOORE when the White Rose are wielding the BATty.

MALIK of it what you will, the visitors attempt at building a lead will be as funny as a SMITH and JONES sketch.

DAVIES is apparently very tall, or SO-LANKI, if you will. JAQUES will try and PHIL his boots, but it will be ALI can do to keep his wicket.

Will the visitors win? Not on your NELly

Oh, not sure if he is listening or not, usually is, but a shout to another FMTTM poster, The_Commisar, congratulations mate. He’s going to be a Dad at 53 years old.

C’MON YORKSHIRE and UP THE BORO J

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I will begin...

A warm 14deg this morning, although gusts of wind bring the temp down, the sky is blue and the clouds white and fluffy.

Apart from the wind it should be a good day for batting.

I'm thinking a decleration around tea today and there will be no need to bat again in the match.

One more bonus point and we are level with "The Bears" at the top of the table.

Naturally, I want us to win the championship but if we don't win, I wouldn't mind Warwicks doing it as I used to live near Edgbaston for 10 years, spent many a day at the cricket ground and got to know a number of the players in the mid-to-late 90's (Dermot Reeve, Piper ....). Have also spent many an hour playing in their nets and AD used to drink in my local - top bloke.

re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

Looks like rain showers for Sat and Sun. As long as tehy aren't too prolonged then showers aren't too bad if you are bowling. Breaks the batsmens concentration and freshens the pitch up a bit for the seamers.

Full batting points in bag, some quick runs a declaration and 3 1st innings bowling points are next targets.

someone tell goughy that if they get past 350 (follow on target for 500) then it will be a draw anyway. He need to bowl them out twice cheaply for a win with the time we have left and rain showeres forecast so get off and stick the buggers in.

7_The_Informer Posted on 10/5 19:42
re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

I played for a number of teams including the University team. My indoor team was called Skolars who played in the Parks league outdoors which was a nightmare as the pitches were puddings and sometimes 50 was a good score. I then played for Martins the last few years who are a nomadic team who play friendlies from Ironbridge down to Oxford. The fixtures are mainly chosen for the quality of the opposition tea

I know a couple of blokes who played Parks league and they said if you can bat on those wickets you can bat anywhere!(not Yorkshire Council standard cricket, you trust Ray).I think all cricket secretaries should pick fixtures on the quality of their teas, personally!

7_The_Informer Posted on 10/5 19:56
re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

ray, it is. Stratford Bards have a particularly tasty tea, mind, last time I played there, when I was back over for a few days last summer, I grounded my hire car on a tree stump and bust the petrol tank. Thankfully, they didn't notice at Heathrow when I returned the car

You have mail by the way ...

7_The_Informer Posted on 10/5 20:00
re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

CBV, that is a true statement. Once we were playing in the Cup semi-final, both played on adjacentish pitches. About 15 overs into our game (we were about 40 for 5 at that time), the two other teams turned up and it turned out that one had been rolled over for only 6!!! When I played Parks league, my batting average was around 6, but then when I moved on, it has gone up to the 30s which is pleasing because it is higher than my bowling average (leg-spinner). In my last season in England, my bowling average was down to 12 which had come about due to 2 net sessions a week at Edgbaston from September through May.

Nice. It hasn't come up on the up-to-date scorecards yet. Err, tes it has as I was typing.

7_The_Informer Posted on 11/5 16:07
re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

Rashid is turning it - but he's too good for the tailenders. Need to get Hoggy back on with Goughy is you ask me, rather than Adil and Dizzy.

7_The_Informer Posted on 11/5 16:10
re: YORKSHIRE V Worcestershie (2007).

As I type, 122/9, Rashid gets Batty top-edging a sweep and caught by Dizzy at backward square leg. Good captaincy by Goughy who had just brought Dizzy in from deep-backward and he didn't have to move to take the catch

Capybara Posted on 11/5 16:12

Let's see if it works this time ...

Worcs are batting again (even Goughy had the nous to enforce the follow on). No wickets yet, but we are top of the league currently (60 points to Warwicks' 58).
