BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Here you go .

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Bang average Scottish mdfield player. Not a regular internation and scores on average 2 goals a season. If we sign him I will be very, very dissapointed.

This kind of signing is comparable to Jason Euell, Alan Wright, Allan Johnston etc.

3m would be a complete waste of money.

Sure that`ll have the Duke rushing to sign up/season ticket holders scrambling to renew, we`re really pushing the boat out here folks.....

Would rather we went for Gera myself, he`s captain of his country and has done it in the premiership before, Scott Brown is NO Geremi that`s for sure......

FunkyPotatoe Posted on 14/5 10:44
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I have seen him play five or six times. Looks good in Scotland. I think he would struggle in England.

Anthony Stokes scored 14 goals for Kilmarnock is around 16 games. In the same amount of games he scored 2 goals for Sunderland in the Championship.

The Scottish League is awful. To take players from there is a big, big gamble.

He does not and will not excite me. He will not encourage those who have let their season tickets lapse to renew. Am I wrong?

One of the most exciting talents from Scotland for many a year. Been excellent in first few caps for his country.

21 year old too.

I think you need to calm down. It's not like he's going to be the only player we'll sign anyway, or do we have to make sure we sign players in order of "Fan excitement levels"?

Please stop suggesting Gera who can't get in West Brom's first choice eleven.

brittleboy Posted on 14/5 10:47
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Seen enough to think Funky is being hasty in his assessment. Very talented footballer with a touch of arrogance in his approach. Could never live up to his hype, could become a top player; he's still young enough to follow either route. IMO boro need to take a chance on players like this.

SouthStandSY Posted on 14/5 10:47

FP is bang on the money - It aint exactly showing the ambition needed to get things back on track, that would be targetting and delivering players of world renown!

Exactly brittleboy

To compare him to Euell is ludicrous

damit1968 Posted on 14/5 10:49
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I hate to agree with Funky but this is exactly the sort of signing I expected this summer, we appear to have blown most of our budget on Woodgate.

Signing Woodgate will not improve the team [bearing in mind he was already playing for us] he is undoubtedly an asset though

I have never seen Scott Brown play, but I was hoping we would have tried to sign a proven premiership winger or someone from another top flight club who has undoubted talent

The players I would have been looking at - depending on whether their respective clubs would let them go are

David Bentley
Jermaine Pennant
James Milner
Aaron Lennon
Shaun Wright-Phillips
Ricardo Quaresma

Let's hope Brown turns out to be more Woodgate than Euell [with regard to Southgate's eye for a player] if he signs for us

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Sorry Falkirk with Stokes!

Scott Brown is not the answer simple as that. Also he prefers to play centrally rather than wide rigth. Are you telling me who is going to be better than Arca in that positon.

He is similar to Morrison and I don't think any better. If Morrison was Scotish he would play for thier national team.

This would not be an exciting signing and not for 3m!

ALSO - if you were Mark Viduka would you be encouraged to stay knowing that this is the kind of 'exciting' signing he will have to play with next year????

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

then you're going to be very disappointed damit1968 if you think we will be in for any of those players and even if we are why would any of them leave their current clubs.

why would lennon leave spurs - 5th this season and in a side who could challenge the top 4 in the next few seasons if they hold on to the likes of berbatov - and come here.....?

Boromart Posted on 14/5 10:52
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I've only seen a couple of snippets of him. But he is a proper right sided player, and therefore better than any of the patched up options we have. The price is maybe a bit steep and he certainly is a gamble, but then again any signing is a gamble.

He is only 22, so lots of scope for improvement, he is a full international, and he has scored 12 goals in 109 games, so he isn't a goal machine.

He is your typical hyper competitve scottish player, these kind of players often make a good if not spectacular career in the english game, think Dickovs work ethic.

He is also a bit of a flair player, he likes to run with the ball at his feet. You can never have too many dribblers in your side.

Note his agent is apparently Wille McKay.....the same agents as Barton! Now if we had both of them that would be a competitive midfield.

Jermaine Pennant - club won't let him go
James Milner - club won't let him go
Aaron Lennon - club won't let him go
Shaun Wright-Phillips - will be overpriced
Ricardo Quaresma - will be overpriced

Scott Brown - He's done more then alright against better teams then us on the international level. Is available and is only going to get better.

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Scott Brown is exactly the type of player we need at Middlesbrough!! FP comparing him to Allan Johnston and Alan Wright is an absurb comparison!!

Scott Brown is 21 and is playing in possibly the best footballing side in the SPL!! He has now broken into the Scotland squad (Ok its Scotland but at the age of 21 he must be doing something right.

Scott Brown displays passion and fight for the cause in every game he plays, are you telling me you don't want that from a Middlesbrough player!! His battling qualities and work effort are comparable to that of Joey Barton etc except he doesn't stub out cigars in folks eyes.

Scott Brown would be an excellent signing for Boro!!

SouthStandSY Posted on 14/5 10:54
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I`ll keep suggesting Gera as long as i want to thanks, for i reckon he`s five times the player Brown is, i`ve seen what he can do at 1st hand and he`s proved himself in the past in the premiership, when he`s featured for the baggies lately he`s done well, he may just need a move to get it all back and `Boro have proved past masters at ressurecting players careers, at least he has undisputed talent....

I saw Brown play for Scotland against Italy recently and although he looked quite promising, it aint the answer to our problems on the right, we wanna be targetting the type of players the likes of Spurs will if we want to get back into Europe, if we don`t we`re going nowhere fast!........

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Scott Brown is an unbelievable player, he was the main man when Mowbray was in charge, and quite simply has outgrown the SPL. 5.5 million is a bargain, if he was playing in the premiership right now he'd be worth 10million. Best Scottish player right now, as he showed when he was head and shoulders above the rest of the Scotland team against the WORLD CUP WINNERS.

Hopefully you lot do sign him, as i'd be gutted to see such a mercurial talent sign for one of the old firm.

I would not have Nugent anywhere near Boro! He is not good enough. He could not lace the boots of Yakubu or Viduka. His hold up play is rubbish, his finishing is average, technically he is great. His attitude is a joke!

Is Scott Brown the kind of signing that will put bums on seats, that will bring back the 'lost' supporters will help us to finish higher in the league than 12th? I don't think so!

There are better players than him around. The Scotish league is awful. Morrison playing on the right would be raved about playing for Hibs. That is my comparison - no better than James Morrison! Oh and he is not quick!

Shaun71 Posted on 14/5 11:05
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

SouthStandSy - Id rather go on the opinions of Hibs fans who see him week in and out, like calumhibbee.

Id rather go down the track of signing young hungry players than 'big names'

Boromart Posted on 14/5 11:05
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

SouthStandSY, you say we should look at Spurs transfer policy.....well they went around europe hoovering up young talent. they new they couldn't get the finished article so tehy spent 2 years buying players like Lennon, Davenport, Robinson, Dawson, Reid, Ghaly, Huddlestone, Routledge etc.

Some were a hit some were a miss. No one really expected the lightweight Lennon to be a hit, not many expected Routledge to be a flop. Plenty of people thought Reid would be a star and Dawson wouldn't be up to, but they were also wrong.

If we get him, lets see what he can do, the stick that people seemt o be beating him with is that the scottish league is rubbish. Well Viduka and Di Canio both played up there and came down here to be stars.

Bang average player in a bang average league! Overpriced and hugely hyped in my opinion.

I don't care what the Hibbs fans think.

Oh and if you think the is quicker than James Morrison you are very, very, very wrong.

Shaun71 - you are the Stat king. He is a wide player - can you tell me how many goals he scores each season and how many assists.

Goal are not everything but since Downing, Acra, Boateng, Rochemback and Euell don't score I think our right sided player better be able to chip in with six - eigth goals a season!

Souter Posted on 14/5 11:21
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I have seen Scot Brown play four times this season including his first Scotland Cap against an excellent Italy. This guy is exactly the kind of player i want big Gareth to be trying to sign, he is a solid midfield player who grafts and trys to get forward when he can, he is not the solution to our right hand side problem but at the age of 21 he can only improve on his game. I would be happy if he was one of our summer signings.

calumhibee1 Posted on 14/5 11:22

damit1968 Posted on 14/5 11:23
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I have never seen him play, and I wonder how many of the people on here who think he will do a good job have seen him play more than 10 games.

I think to attract the 8000 missing season ticket holders back and propel us up the league we need to be spending the money we will get at the end of the 2007/08 season [speculate to accumulate], it is a gamble but so is not buying the players we need to compete...we could end up losing ground on other teasm around us

We can hazard a guess that West Ham, Aston Villa, Newcastle, Portsmouth and Wigan will all spend large sums this summer to try and move away from the bottom half of the table.

David Bentley - every player has a price and Blackburn are not exactly Man Utd are they
Aaron Lennon - Northern and every player has a price
Jermaine Pennant - Liverpool might buy some more Spanish players for that side and every player has a price
Shaun Wright-Phillips - Can he get in the Chelsea side and every player has a price [will probably go to West Ham]
James Milner - the new manager may not rate him
Ricardo Quaresma - ok I was just being daft thinking we would sign a player of his ability

FunkyPotatoe Posted on 14/5 11:23
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Souter - you have just hit the nail on the head! 'he is not the solution to our rigth sided problem'

SO why SIGN him then?

Theres rumours about Rocky going, and even question marks about Boateng.

I've said it before, but I may as well say it again - Broony is a quality player, but he is no right winger.

I have seen him live a few times, and more often than not, he has impressed.

Is he better than Arca? Maybe. Certainly a better tackler and has a better engine. Not that Arca's a tart or this lad is a headless chicken - just this lad is better in those departments. Arca's more creative, better at dead balls and has a better temperament. Brown would certainly add to our squad, as we need competition for that slot. When Arca's out, we're fooked and Scott Brown would be a good addition for that reason, and if he is good enough to even take Arca's place, then we have a good signing indeed!

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

If you think that he is better than Arca then you better pack your bags and go home. Arca's work rate is out of this world. Whilst he is not the quickest he works his socks off each and every game. Also, technically he is the best at the club.

He is not a natural wide player so why sign him with a view of playing him there??

I think the ability to fill the stadium, keep Viduka and attract better players should be key when signing a player! (oh and playing him in his best positon is also a good idea!)

(PS why does he not play centrally for Hibs if this is his best position????)

calumhibee1 Posted on 14/5 11:50
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

he does play centrally for hibs, as i've said many times in the last half hour.
And also, why not sign him if he's good enough to be one of the best players on the pitch playing on the right, against the world champions. Just cause it's not his natural position, doesn't mean he can't play there.

So why is this player best for the club and the team?

We 100% need a RIGHT BACK and a RIGHT MIDFIELD player. Is Brown going to play rigth back or right midfield? If he does then he is playing out of posistion, agreed? So why sign a player that is not a priroity. So how is this good for the team?

As Mark Viduka if this signing excites him and could help persude him to stay. How many extra season tickets will this signing sell? If none then how is it good for the club?

Shaun71 Posted on 14/5 12:04
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I dont give a flying f... whether people are excited by a potential signing. The calibre of Scott Brown coming to play for us actually does excite me.

Tim Cahilll had scored about 6 more goals in his career at the same age for a lower league team in Millwall, than Scott Brown.

captain5 Posted on 14/5 12:05
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

"Take a poll from the 27,000 Boro fans there yesterday - how many do you think would be excited by this signing?"

A good proportion of our fans would quite happily see us get rid of Downing. If we sign him and he turns out to be good then what's the problem??

We do need another central midfielder anyway.

Pennant is rank awful though.

Scott Brown will not be the only signing anyway.

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

So buying a 21 year old who has never played top flight fooball is a good idea?

Shaun - Your info on Cahill is rubbish! In his first full season he scored 6 league goals in his second full season 12 - for lowly Millwall.

Brown in his first full seasons scored 3 and in his second scored 3.

Two very, very different players in my opinion!

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Im shocked and stunned and the lack of football knowledge from some of the people on this thread.

Zoltan Gera LOL, Scott Brown is a far better player than him and i fking hate Hibs.

Hes probably better than any midfielder you have, your team has obese slow players like Rochemback.

JLinardi Posted on 14/5 12:12
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

He sounds good but like ive said before ive never seen him play, 5.5m does sound alot of money for him, but Big Steve owld Keith and Young G know what there doing, hopefully if we get him we compliment the signing, with a right back and another midfielder, left back cover and new striker is also needed.

.....................schwarzer

young......Woodgate.............Pogatetz.......taylor

Brown......Rochemback...........Arca............Downing

............Viduka..............yakubu

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

i cant believe somne of, you we are building a squad! the lad is a good player i have watched him more than ten times, ive watched him play for sciotland twice and was quality, especially against italy, ive also seen him play 8 or more times for hibs on sky and on setanta, hes a good passer, quick, execellent dribbler, sets up goals and chips win with a few, he will score more in a better team, as at the moment with hibs, he does all of the attacking work, creating chances for the strikers, hell get more chances in our team.. ffs give the lad a chance before writing him off, a lot of you had wrote arca off after 45 mins against reading and an hour against watford

kermit_the_smog Posted on 14/5 12:24
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Lets go for Barton and Sturridge at Man City, as well as Scott Brown and Luke Young

Sturridge is awesome on FM so that must mean he's quality in real life ;)

We'd then qualify for Europe and probably win the UEFA cup, and with a few quality signings after winning UEFA cup we'll probably win the league and get in the champs league.

Gosh, I feel like Alan Oliver.

Duncan_Blackheart Posted on 14/5 12:27
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

FP - Dunno if that was aimed at me, but...where did I definitively say he is better than Arca? I said that certain aspects of his game are better. Arca does have a great engine - this lad's is, in my opinion, better. Or can no-one have a better engine than Arca because you say so?

And if he does take Arca's place - great! Isn't improving the squad the name of the game, even if it does mean one of this season's successes being displaced? We don't even know whether he's seen as direct competition for that slot, so it is a moot point for now.

So what if he's not a big name (yet?), or are you totally seduced by what the media tells you is good? I understand that ignorant people with a tenuous grip on reality might think ("never heard of him - he is therefore crap - why don't we simply sign *insert 8m player here*?"), and that his signing in isolation might not put bums on seats, as an awful lot of people think like that.

However, signings like this are part of the jigsaw. We can't sign Berbatov yesterday. Brown might be the type of player who allows Yak/ Duke to shine even more. Who knows?

Some people would be better off supporting Chelsea or Man Utd Plc.

calumhibee1 Posted on 14/5 12:29

I think that kind of says it all when a supporter of Hibs biggest rivals admits that he believes he's better than everyone in the Boro midfield.

damit1968 Posted on 14/5 12:33
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Pennant is not rank awful (all stats taken from Yahoo, so blame them if they're incorrect)

from 20 starts he scored 1 goal and assisted in 4

Downing started 34

scored 2 and assisted in 8

If Pennant had started the same number of games he probably would have got a similar number of goals/assists 1.7 and 6.8 or 2 and 7

Of course he is also crossing the ball to Crouch who has proved at international level that he can't put Downing's excellent crosses into the net

A wing pairing of Downing and Pennant would be excellent and improve both players stats as the opposition would not know which threat to nullify

So if we do get Scott Brown and he does play on the right I hope he plays well there...he can't be any worse than Boateng, Mendieta, Parnaby and god knows how many other players we have tried there over the last few years

kermit_the_smog Posted on 14/5 12:34
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I'd be happy with the signing of Brown. It's far from a done deal considering Lamb said we hadn't agreed a fee yet.

Also, Boro fans have been spoilt over the recent years with signings of Juninho, Rav, Emerson and the likes and look where that got us.

Which world class players are gonna come here if we don't pay them ridiculous amounts? We have a wage budget and we should stick to that, players like Brown are obvious quality and are not gonna command the earth in wages. Seem's like a player who's gonna give his all which is exactly the kinda player we should be going after.

Shaun71 Posted on 14/5 12:41
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I was looking at how many goals hed scored up till he was 21 FP. Have a look again. Yes he had scored 28 goals for Millwall up to when he was 21. Brown at the same age has scored 19. Not much difference and they are totally different players.

Fair enough you have your opinion but I for one would be very happy if we sign players of the calibre of Brown

smoggy4life Posted on 14/5 12:43
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

funky - have a look at the link and think on about jumping the gun regarding how good a player is.

We try and sign a young player who is getting rave reviews and you are criticising the club and the player. Why not see what Gareth is trying to build. I would pick Brown over Gera 100 times out of 100. Gera is on the bench week in week out at WBA in the Championship.

I havnt seen much of Brown, but what i have seen i have been very impressed.

But give him a chance if he does sign.

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Hang on a mo. Brown's a central midfielder, so why are you half wits thinking he;s the answer on the right? He and Gera play different positions. Maybe you'd play him in a team instead of Gera, but it's not where he plays. If we sign him then he'll be replacing one of the central players, and it's time Southgate did it.

How can anyone trust the comments of Hibs fans?

Can nobody remember the world class talents of Eoin jess and Mark Burchill? Maybe even Neil MCann?

All garbage and couldn't hack it in a proper league.

Hibs's captain is a Yarm lad who was playing for Grimsby last year! They're also signign York City's top scorer on a bosman.

that's their level and his.

Both of Hibs first choice centre backs are from Yarm, both of them went to Conyers.

I know Chris Hogg just to say hi to, and i know he still has family round here, hopefully he and Jones will tell Brown it would be a good move

Just sent a text to a mate of mine who is a St Johnstone fan and a regular viewer of Hibs, asking what he thought of Brown. He sent this back:

"Very, very good. Bit of a mental but a really good player. I heard Fergie was looking at him. Plays centre or right midfield."

Hes right, he can be a liability at times if things aren't going well hes liable to dive in 2 footed or stick the elbow on an opponents jaw.

He needs to screw the nut.

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

To be fair, he has screwed the nut a bit this season. He's an all action midfielder, he's never going to shirk out a challenge, but this season he's cut out the silly challenges, and instead resorts to mouthing off to opponents and ripping the utter pish out them.
Scott Brown to Barry Ferguson - "Who are you? You're not good enough to be on the same pitch as me."
He's got a brilliant arrogance about him, which only the best players have.

I'll give him a chance - I hope he is brilliant, I hope all of the hype is true - but he don't excite me and 5m for a 21 year scot who has not played top class football is worse than paying 8m for a 22 year old italian who has not played top class football!

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Lets get things straight...at the moment Boro are a soft touch.

We need to start signing a few players that are going to ruffle feathers and have some desire as well as skill. Build a team that people fear playing against. This lad seems to have both the hunger to prove himself and the passion. Who cares if he's a central player, chances are he's better than Rochemback who has been very poor for us the past 2 seasons. Gareth needs to get the team competing because on too many occasions (mainly against team's poorer than us) we have been turned over, down to a lack of desire.

micky_k86 Posted on 14/5 14:56
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I've never seen him play but from what Hibs fans have said I'd be excited by us signing him. Like the fella above said, we need a few more grafters who'll knock a few people about; and by the sounds of it he's got a bit of class too.

Well rather have him than a washed up Hungarian who's alledged to have a colourful lifestyle.

kermit_the_smog Posted on 14/5 14:58
re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

I think it'd be a really good signing.

I hope it all comes off as he's the sort of player we need.

Seems like he has plenty of passion which is something that the fans have often moaned about over the past few seasons.

Brown, Barton and Cattermole in the same midfield? ;)

Funky p...Geremi wouldnt excite the 8000 odd fans that have stayed away either...people were pretty indifferent about him when he was here though i see the reasoning in signing him as him being a right sided player....

Scott Brown looks like a menacing character. With him and Pogatetz in the side we may psychologically win games before the kick off, if they both give the opposition the stare!

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Alright lads,

As a Hibee thats seen Broon over the last few years I thought I'd give you the lowdown. Surprising to see so many judging a player before seeing him.

He's a cracking player, too good for Hibs and too good for the Scottish league (which isn't as bad as you lot say but thats another story). Scottish football has been in a bad state for years now but there are a lot of good young players coming through and Scott is the best of the lot.

He's got the lot, a great engine, showboat skills, no prisoners in the tackle and a real playmaker. One thing you will all love, as all fans do, is that he's an arrogant wee radge and gives 100% in every single game he plays in. There is no way wee Broony would ever be intimidated against the bigger teams, in fact the bigger the game the better he is and thats what good players are judged by.

Admittedly he's been playing in an inferior league against inferior teams but in big cup games, games against the old firm and for Scotland he hasn't looked out of place and that includes a certain game against the world champions where, for the first half at least, I thought he looked like the best player on the pitch. He reminds me a bit of Ribbery (sp) at Marseille.

In my opinion, for what its worth, he'd be a good signing for Boro. He maybe won't be starting every game for you but he's still young and the best is yet to come.

Its rumoured that Boro, Bolton, Spurs and Everton are all having a good look and Hibs fans would be happy to see him have a go in the Premiership, principally because we don't want him going to either of the ugly sisters.

Cheers and good luck.

re: BORO hold talks with Scott Brown.

Watching the fan forum thing with Cooper. He basically said what everyone apart from Boro fans can see. If we have an out and out winger on the right, then we will be playing effectively with four forwards. Unless you've got the best central midfielders, full-backs and centre-backs you get overran, Cooper basically said that the team is set up to get the ball to stewey as much as they can, and that the right-midfielder is expected to tuck in, pay the ball and get his foot in. That's why we persevered with Cattermole. If this Brown lad can play a bit as well as do the things mentioned, I say get him signed up. Gera would be a complete waste of money, and there isn't anything else out there.

B.t.w, Cooper also hinted that Morrison doesn't like playing right-side, and thats why he hasn't played there despite fans protests. Attitude eh?
