The Manics

USed to really like them around the time Everything Must Go came out but then realised they were just a bunch of fakers.

In general my mind isn't easily changed and not much else springs to mind.

So why is it then that as soon as a new(ish) band receives any sorta national recognition, you lot all fall out of love with them?

Anything to do with wanting to appear (*swallows hard*) cool and it just aint cool to like 'chart' or commercially successful bands?

re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

It's nothing to do with that wool. I liked Franz Ferdinand's first album when i got it but the second one was garbage. I never even bother with the first one now. I couldn't care less if a band is successful or not, i'm not one of these people who stops liking a band as soon as they have commercial success, that way of thinking always baffles me.

s_n_s I accept that but you have to agree that it's the same syndrome as 'building 'em up to knock 'em back down'

It's what we're good at.

re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

I actually saw them live aswell at Northumbria Uni and they were brilliant. There was just something about that second album that put me off them. I agree that the media build bands up too much. Most bands haven't got a hope with their second albums the amount they get bulit and hyped up.

re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

I think that musicians in general have only so many good songs in them. They say the first album takes 10 years to write and they can put all their best songs on. Then they get 6 months to write an album after their tour. It's not the same when you are contracted to 'be creative'. I honestly think people just exhaust all their ideas. Paul McCartney wrote some amazing songs, but he's all out of ideas now.

I'd try and appreciate old stuff you used to like even if they turn rubbish on the next album, because everyone is a bit like that eventually.

Trod.....'Paul McCartney is all out of ideas'

Don't you you think 45 years later he's entitled to be a tad jaded FFS?

Trodders - Macca recently won "Classical Album Of The Year" for "Ecce Cor Meum" (Behold My Heart) so perhaps his muse isn't exhausted rather he has moved on?

Not my cup of tea but at least he's still being creative.

re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

Sorry, "all out of ideas" wasn't a very fair description. What I mean is he is not as prolific in the same way he was when he first started writing. He has been going for a long long time so of course he is entitled to be a bit jaded! I wasn't criticising his output but what I'm saying is if you took his first, say, 20 songs that he published on an album they will be as a whole, a lot better than his last 20 were. I'm not saying they are rubbish, I'm just saying that his earlier work was just that good.

Those bands who try to follow their original album, in general, tend to exhaust the 'well of inspiration' and those who adapt last a lot longer.

wool_skull Posted on 15/5 21:28
re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

Trodders...I'm ALMOST going along with you there but (and it was you that used McCatrney as an example) don't you think that musicians that have anything to offer actually grow into their music before fading and just hanging around to make even more money.

Compare , if you will, 'With the Beatles' and 'Please Please Me' to 'Revolver' and 'Sgt Pepper' for example.

trodbitch Posted on 15/5 21:39
re: Bands or artists you used to like.....

Yes I do, and I think I made my point badly. McCartney was a terrible example. I agree they move on and I appreciate that too in lots of my favourite bands.
