Yep I think you will find wynyard is actually a part of Billingham, with a host of other Boro stars living there it can't be too bad ey! ;-)

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

teebag your a loser, you must have been evicted from billingham if you have that mentality. Name it where you live, go on, i dare you.
Old Billingham has some "cultural" pubs, and a lively village which includes individual shops, great for browsing. The houses in this area are the oldest in billingham.
The town centre area is decent, although slightly run down, and a new housing estate twinned with the town centre upgrade planned will turn this into a "cosmopolitan" heaven.
Wolviston court is a quieter area of Billingham, and since wolviston grange, which a new estate has sprung up, both area's have decent community spirit.
Wolviston is a village on the outskirts, very expensive and reportidly not too nice to live in.

Wonky donkey......... are you serious? "The town centre area is decent, although slightly run down" The town centre area is a shitehole and cesspit. it has no interesting shops and looks like a depressed 1950's throwback, inhabited with chavs and glue sniffers off their silly heads.

I have lived most of my life in Billingham and its been sad to see it go downhill. If you think its 'slighty rundown' then your standards or expectations of the area we live in are so low that they insignificant. Stockton Council should be ashamed of themselves.

Corcaigh_the_Cat Posted on 22/5 14:37
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

For me the town centre's now too big, a more compact shopping area and a couple more pubs and eating houses would be about right.

The housing above the shops needs demolishing, it's shoddy, and replacing with a mix of apartments and low cost housing, with lots of open greenspace.

Turner_86 Posted on 22/5 14:51
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Basically, half of Billingham is very nice, the other half is not very nice, but the not very nice bit is not as bad as the not very nice bits in other areas of Teesside and the nice bit is probably not as nice as the nice bits in other areas of Teesside, hope that makes sense..

But, living in Billingham, I class Wolviston and wynyard as there own seperate bit, along with haverton hill and port clarence.

So people from outside the town probably think Billingham is bigger than what Billingham residants do.

If it wasn't for the stupid pensioners who wanted to save the forum, f**k knows why, we might already have been on the way to building a nice shiney new town centre. Instead it's still charity shop heavan.

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

turner_86, if it was not for the pensioners, the forum site would now have a sainsburys on it, which in turn would close down the town.
the forum is being developed, along with the town centre, go along to one of the meetings and see the plans, it looks great.

Ultra_Magnus Posted on 22/5 14:58
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

I quite like the fact that The Forum was saved. The facilites are actually pretty good considering the massive under investment by Stockton Countil. Hopefully, it will become very good again with some much needed cash.

Turner_86 Posted on 22/5 14:58
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

I don't care what they put there, a nice shiney supermarket would look better than what is their now. And if the town closed it wouldn't bother me, I've not been there for over 5 years because their is nothing worth going for.

But I hope you are right, and I hope they get on with it sooner rather than later.

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Maybe Turner....and a new sports centre without an ice rink and a swimming pool half the size. The park cut in half and the majority of the town centre ignored.

I was involved in the redevelopment at an early stage, the implications weren't good. Got to say, if the council and their buddies ahd made a decent attempt at a consultation, coupled with a response to the feedback, then we could have had something worthwhile. As it was, they used backhanded methods and the plans went to the dogs.

The local politicians have the same 'presentation gurus' as national politics and with it has gone the confidence of the people they're representing.

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Just need to wait a decade for the anachronistic morons who want to save John Whitehead Park (HAHAAAAA!!!!) to die and then I'd consider moving back when I'm older.

There's far more worse places to live, just small pockets in Billingham where it's akin to a transplant from Sarajevo circa 1993.

I think it's the current generation who are raising young children who'll be make or break for the town, the folk just a few years older than me. It's noticable from my little brother's tales about my old school, how discipline has changed because there's just so many scrotes there. (That's St. Michael's. Campus is apparently on the up, though)

The part of the town where I live is nice, everyone who's visited who isn't from the area says what a nice place it is around there, (Wolviston grange development) doesn't deserve a bad press - it's just a matter of seeing the reality, the same goes for the entire Tees basin area. Folk see a few young girls pushing prams, industrial flares and think it's a horrific distopia.

I used to live about 150 yards from the Wynyard and have probably drank in there 2 or 3 times. It was shyte in my opinion. The Swan or The Kings was more regular, even the Astronaught at one stage of a troubled youth ffs!

thedoors Posted on 22/5 15:47
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

aye fair play forgot about the new moon, hav moved from wolvo court upto newcastle thru uni an that, couple of places started doin parmos up there but none of them in same league like wen yer get one from home. wen yer drink down the quayside an ozzy road payin 3quid for warm piss yer appreciate how decent the pints are. the lager in the welly always top notch, not too impressed with the kings after was raped in broad daylight by deal or no deal last nite.

This sums up billingham for me, someone I know lost their phone in the smiths arms went back the following day and asked if anyone had handed it in. No luck, so they asked if they could lift up the cusions. No phones but around 200 hyperdermic needles.

Knock the place down, Id gladly sacrifice myself for the greater good.

jeff_potato Posted on 22/5 16:04
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

The Kings certainly is full of posers. I either go in there or the Farm when I'm home for a couple of days, see some friends.

Kings is weird, folk get dressed up for a full on night out then go home at 11pm, there's even drug-taking in the toilets, it's a pub FFS, not a nightclub.

I really don't see why people get glammed up for a pint or two, blokes with their hair done for the occasion and aftershave slapped on. Pff.

PP - re Mr. Maxwell - I'd say it's a mixture of that and the new intake of kids. Parents not willing to play ball with that whole community ethos which Maxwell fostered.

A lot of the new teachers sound like morons too, going back to those stories from my sibling, I think the new PE teacher spent a fortnight playing for a Sunday league team or something, the stuff he tells these kids indicates he's not qualified at all.

Jeff i have to disagree with you about St Michaels. My daughter is in year 7. I was there when Shanley was head. From what i have seen over the past year discipline is very much at the forefront and as for the teachers being morons they're certainly no worse now than when i attended.

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

I always had a lot of respect for Maxwell, however I do think that his one failure was that the worst behaved kids in my year kept pushing the line because they were from big families who got on with him on a personal level.

Bit daft when some kids would commit singular indiscrepancies and get silly punishments for it.

grocerygirl - I'm only going on anecdotal evidence, I hear Mrs. Hunt is a deputy head now or something? I always got on well with her at school, good teacher.

It'd be interesting to go back now, it's only been 5 years so most of my former tutors will still be there, as I finally leave the education system.

ccole Posted on 22/5 17:26
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

For those who are thinking of moving to Billingham, please donít, itís a shyte hole.

If youíre from Boro, stick to the town. I know the government sayís you have the worst car crime and house break in records in the country, but stick in there. Mallon will soon sort it out.

Those from Stockton? Donít bother. We donít have the same rich cultural diversity brought to Stockton following the high influx of foreign nationals who have landed lately and give your town such a ďcosmopolitanĒ feel to it. Still, it keeps those pound shops on the high street busy.

You can tell Billingham is backward and behind the times, after all, how many other town centresí can you go for a night out in and feel safe to walk home from? Even the beer mats in Billingham pubs have photo's of Stockton residents/pikies on issued with ASBO's.

Even our own Chavs are just not bad enough !

Keep away from Billingham, its horrible, honest. Leave to the current residents.

One point that does puzzle me. If Billingham Town Centre was such an architectural nightmare when built, why did they press ahead with the Cleveland and Castlegate Centres 15 years later? Was it out of sympathy for not letting Billingham feel alone?

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Jeff a lot of my old teachers are still there too. Its very strange going back. I'm please with the school up to now but saying that my daughter is extremely quiet and well behaved so i doubt i would have problems where ever she went. I agree with what you said about the new intake of kids. Regardless of discipline in school there has to be discipline in all forms of life and i don't think children have as much as they used to. Some kids aren't scared of the police anymore or don't have any respect for parents. Kids are drinking on the streets from a much younger age. I've seen lots of cases where kids have come into the shop where i work with their mam or dad during school hours (the parents knowing they are off school and not really caring that they are skiving off).

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

I was thinking about what else is good about billingham, here are further additions of the best bits :
1. 2 Football teams, yes thats right, we are so good we have 2 teams. Synners are better than town though.
2. Billingham Beck, great place for a stroll or a bit of dogging on a night.
3. A wide variation of pubs, merlin, telstar, kings, pubs up in wolvo that serve lovely food, traders down the green, massive choice.
4. All women in billingham are quite easy, and will drop their knickers for a bottle of lambrini.
5. All women in billingham are very good looking.
6. Brilliant schools, northfield is a sports accadamy, st.micks is also well respected in offsted reports, and we even have the campus for the dumb dumbs of the town.
7. Ideally situated for easy road links ( basically on the side of the a19 )
8. Loads of footballers live here.
9. I live here.
10. People who dont only slag it off cos there jelous.

wolviston court- a lovely place to live, a vibrant community with a beating heart, the court shops which cater for any need you nay have, a deli selling fresh hot food during the day, a butcher's ( every red blooded homosapien needs meat! ) a post office ( cos stuff needs delivering sometimes ) a chinese takeaway, a hairdressers, a pizza shop the obligatory bells stores ( there only closed when your asleep you know ) and the crowning glory (sort of) the wynyard pub a haven for all men everywhere as no boiler would dare go in....all in all a splendid place to live

you are far of the mark one, not all the women will not drop their pants for a bottle of cheap plonk and i went to northfield yes good school but 2 of my daughters and some my nephews and neices went to to and still go to the campus and 4 of them have gone on to uni my friends son went on to bede then oxford and another girl i know went to cambridge from campus also my cousin who went there did a degree in astro physics at southhampton and went on to be come a group captain flying tornados not bad for what you describe as a bunch of dumb dumbs!

Ultra_Magnus Posted on 23/5 11:23

wonkydonky Posted on 23/5 11:25

flabby, you stated that your "friends son went on to bede then oxford and another girl i know went to cambridge from campus also my cousin who went there did a degree in astro physics at southhampton and went on to be come a group captain flying tornados."
Thats exactly what i meant, people who go to campus are slower than your average bear, and end up in poor and often unskilled jobs, also having to go and resit their exams after they have finnished school. I dont think less of these people, just aware that social problems do occur when around them. It takes a whole mix of people to make billingham a great town, and we can even be extreme and say we have a tornado flying captain living here ! Can he get free passes for all the other rides at alton towers ?

wonkydonky Posted on 23/5 11:28

flabby66 Posted on 23/5 11:38
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

and your point is wonky?? you cant generalize a whole school as a bunch of dumb dumbs when that isnt the case, all the schools have a mixed bunch from all areas of billingham and being 4o i know plenty of people over the years who have gone to all three schools with varying degrees of success in life i know people who went to norhtfield and st michaels who are in so called "deadend jobs" yes northfield and st micheals are more successful schools but they still have a mix of abilities,my oldest son went to st michaels and was a very good school and hes doing well but he prob would have done the same which ever school he went to.

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Apart from a few recent updates, Billingham has been widely neglected as a town by the council and government for some time. There has been no attempt for business and financial growth on any great scale.

The town centre is way behind the times. For a town the size of Billingham, I think it's a travesty that the centre is no bigger than that of Guisborough or Yarm for instance.

I'm sure the majority of people are decent folk, but I do believe the town deserves better. Apart from the industries that are largely accredited to 'Teesside' on a whole - there is no real tradition, history or future for the town. Shame!

(watch the backlash)

arisk Posted on 23/5 12:37
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

"there is no real tradition, history"

Except that when the saxons came up the Tees, past that bog on the left hand side which 500 years later became Middlesbrough, then done a right down Billingham Beck, they built a church, which remains one of the oldest buildings on Teesside.

Is that not "history"?

FAT_AL Posted on 23/5 12:55
re: What is the best part of Billingham?

Lived in Billingham 8 years Wolviston Grange and now Wolviston Court most of the points on here you could apply to any town in Teesside.

Billingham plus points for me :

Road links A19 / A1M past Wynyard spoke to many people who commute North and South

New Developments eg. Wolviston Grange.

Town Centre free parking can be in and out with shopping in 5 mins. Go to the Theatre etc

Why try and compete with Boro / Stockton / Teesside Park, if you want glue sniffers and Druggies visit these shopping areas instead.

No night life after 11pm brilliant no problems for the police they can get on with community policing which is excellent.

Good Pubs whether you want lively or country.

Good schools from primary to senior.

the town centre i find is a bit run down, but we went shopping there to asda not long back , and were in and out in 20mind, unlike piggin tesco at horse n jockey,,

re: What is the best part of Billingham?

I like Billingham, grown attached to it since i was born here!

Some good pubs, Merlin is good if you want some Boro craic, Kings is good for a general booze and a burger, though like people have said previous can be fulla people who have just been to toni and guy then come to the kings for the night, why?! Welly up in Wolvo is good for a booze up, and the ship is good for food.

Station is good for a change and even traders is good for a late night drink, not fulla cretins like visions used to be!

Good take aways, especially at clifton.

Footy at the forum and northfield,

pubs that put on buses to the home matches and some away matches

crap town centre but such is life, soon to be knocked down and replaced most likely.

golf course for those into that sort of thing.

Billy beck if rats are more your thing.

And also funny clips of scutters on youtube doing "rave" search Billingham Ravers, almost looks like theyre trying jumpstyle that the dutch love.
