NEWSDESK: Exclusive - I was the only reporter in court. Court list says that dates of birth are unknown so I can’t get their ages. Be careful if you rearrange the story and regroup the animals because I don’t know if some of the charges relate to the same animal. For example, they may well have been charged with not feeding two lizards (Sam and Fred) properly and not homing one lizard (Sam) properly. If we just add up the animals, it looks like three lizards they’ve mistreated (2+1) but could actually be two (two charges of cruelty against Sam and one of cruelty against Fred). See what I mean? ALLI PYRAH TWO Teesside pet shop owners are to go on trial for neglecting scores of animals. Lauren Gibson and Craig Basford, who ran the Petropolis pet shop in Billingham, have pleaded not guilty to 33 counts of causing unnecessary suffering to animals and breaches of their pet shop licence. Story continues ADVERTISEMENT The offences are alleged to have taken place at their shop in Clifton Avenue and the home they share in Weardale Crescent, Billingham, between December 2005, when they were granted their licence, and September 2006. At a preliminary hearing at Teesside Magistrates Court yesterdayTuesday, prosecutor Roisin McKenzie read out the charges. At their shop, both Basford and Gibson are accused of allowing vermin to infest the premises and letting water bowls in bird cages get “extremely dirty with droppings, seed particles and algae”. They are also charged with keeping rabbits in a way they could be interfered with, failing to provide adequate food, water and care to 25 bearded dragons, two juvenile blizzard leopard geckos, three leopard geckos, two ridge-tailed monitors and two corn snakes and keeping 21 hatchling snakes, a jungle royal python and a bearded dragon in unsuitable accommodation. They are accused of not attending regularly to three leopard geckos and failing to isolate a sick bearded dragon. They also allegedly allowed the fire exit to be obstructed. At their home in Weardale Crescent, the pair are charged with failing to provide adequate food, water and care to a quail, a cockatiel, two lovebirds, three canaries and 11 rats. They are also accused of failing to provide proper housing, food and cleaning for a king snake, a leopard gecko, two spider geckos, two barking geckos, a Solomon Island ground boa, four corn snakes and five ridge-tailed monitors. Gibson and Basford are being prosecuted under the Protection of Animals Act 1911 and the Pet Animals Act 1951 and for breaches of their licence conditions. They are set to reappear before Teesside magistrates later this month.

'I was the only reporter in court' Intriguing, somewhat poignant insight into the lonely world of the junior hack. Kicked out of a nice warm newsroom to hit the trail of lizard abusers with precious little chance of that 'Hold the presses' phonecall moment.

I thought this was going to be about Gloucester Council considering a statue of Fred West. What was that all about yesterday Archie?

It's been removed now though. That pet shop was a few doors away from where I live. It is now the lovely delicious deli that sells those lovely pork sanwiches that I mentioned in the Billingham thread. I'm a bit unnerved to hear that only a few months ago it was infested with vermin...

Shame it wasn't an Anthony Vickers story, it might have revealed who he stole his ideas off from fmttm. --- Post edited by Girth_Worm_Jim on 23/5 13:27 ---

You beat me to it, Gillandi. I was just about to ask him the same thing. He was ignoring me yesterday.
