laptop wireless help etc yawwwn

Right, I've got a laptop. Now what do I need to get on-line out and about? Do I just pick an ISP and stick a disc in? Will it be a monthly contract or can I get pay as you go? Do I need a dongle? It is wifi enabled already.

You'll be needing something like this

Or you can use your mobile as a modem, but speeds and charges will vary.

Yup, vodafone 3g/gprs card. Expect slow access, loss of signal and to pay for the privilege.

Hmmm. A split in the geek community. What do other people use? It's only for basic surfing and e-mail.

Well unless you are going to be able to take advantage of wireless hotspots in places such as starbucks, you are looking at using the gprs/3g network. So vodafone, orange or o2 depending on signal strength in your area

Personally, I find mobile gprs/3g to be depressingly slow.

Rebel, mate of mine got a cracking deal with T Mobile. £17.99 a month, 12 month contract, unlimited download with a broadband speed connection and no trouble with bad signals.

He had vodaphone for a couple of years previous but had a download limit and the signal was shyte.

Being a travelling man went for the T Mobile deal myself but its up to about £25 a month now. I think you can get a cheaper deal if you have your mobile phone contract with them as well.

We swapped all our work users from orange to t-mobile. They fooking hate us now!

Huan, £25 sounds acceptable. Is there any other equiptment involved? I'm not the most technical of folk. How long will it take to get it sorted?
