| Passport control security | |
Just been to Amsterdam for a long weekend with a load of mates. In a nutshell one of the lads didn't have his passport when we flew so brought his brothers (who looks nothing like him) and managed to get to Amsterdam through all the usual checks and almost back although he finally got caught out just as we were about to board the plane to come back yesterday. Even then they let him on anyway as he had his driving license. I thought passport controls were a lot tighter these days than that.

I think they just assume if you're going to Amsterdam you're all too "smacked off your tits on Cecil" to be any bother.

He could have flown with his driving licence, a EU natioanl can fly in and out of any other EU country as long as they have some form of natioanl photo ID. You could not use a rail card or a student card. Most countries in Euroland have ID cards, we accept them here just the same as other countries do

I wasn't aware of that salford. He could have saved the bother then! He did get through all but the final check on a passport that wasn't his though. The name on the boarding card didn't match the name on the passport or anything. I wouldn't have thought it was possible.

the check in assisant did not do there job properly, this happens a great deal one of the reasons we have so many asylum seekers. If they had he would not have been able to travel to amsterdam or check in on the other side It's easier to get a forged ID card than it is to get a passport.

Bad form that! My gf's housemate was having Chinese last night and the smell of it knocked me sideways! I'll get the photos off my camera tonight, but if everyone else gets me the ones they took I was thinking I'd put them all on a dvd with a soundtrack and the like.

I haven't got that many on my phone but it's definitely a case of quality rather than quantity. I will put the word about and try and get everyones together and send them over to you.

Did that picture message ever get through to Paddy? I landed at Donny airport and the first thing I saw was this... I had to send him it!

"this happens a great deal one of the reasons we have so many asylum seekers" We have loads of asylum seekers because people don't check passports? I don't get that, to be honest.

You cannot leave the UK without a passport. The UK (like the Swiss) have seperate visa requirements that means that when you arrive in AMS you have to transit via the Schengen Passport control. After that you can travel without having your passport checked - all destinations eg Germany Spain are Schengen and there is no passport check upon arrival. For check-in, you do require a passport. Your mate is very lucky was not "done" and sent to the British Embassy, which would've cost him dearly to get back home. He is lucky!

Apart from Ireland, you don't need your passport, just photo ID.

You've got that the wrong way round, number_10. You can travel to Ireland on photo ID, but not the rest of Europe if you're a UK citizen. You need a passport.

Pete, if i'd have seen something similar to that at Newcastle Airport it would have just topped the trip off!

Joseph is correct, as you can fly with your national identity card in Europe. As the UK does not have a national identity card (yet) then one needs ones passport. --- Post edited by denuncia on 29/5 17:49 ---
