Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

I`m currently with Brookson (have been for the past 10 years), but the current mess they are in has led me to think enough is enough.

Can anyone recommend a good Teesside based accountant who deals with IR35, Ltd companies, personal taxation etc? The nearer to Yarm the better.

Cheers

"The current mess they are in"

Why, whats' happened now?

I jumped ship in March over to a Ltd company, as all Brookson seemed to be bothered about was being IR35 complient - f_ck everything else.

With the new changes to the composite companies, all Brookson are are glorified book keepers anyway - and charge a fortune for the privelage.

Bag of shyte.

Does it have to be Teesside based?

When I contracted I used Giant Group. I filled a timesheet in online and they handled all the billing, payroll and accounts. IR35-tastic.

In a nutshell Mersey thats what is happening...£26 a week thet are charging which in my book is daylight robbery!...

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

They were going to charge £34 a week, so £26 is a bit more competitive! Backtracked quickly on that one.

I know exactly what you mean about Brookson - they just cost me a few hundred quid through not having my business bank account set up in time to invoice for last month so I had to get paid on a PAYE basis so I'm ditching them as well.

Mate of mine from the Yarm area swears by Barnes Thornber - they're tax consultants not chartered accountants but they do everything from accounts to tax returns. Number is 01642 788462.

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

Heaton Mersey - basically, since things went to fully Ltd Co status they haven`y been able to cope. Here are extracts from two e-mails i`ve had from former colleagues this week:

"The two other Engineers in the same office as me that were with Brookson have left and set up their own Ltd Companies.
Despite telling Brookson they were leaving Brookson have still set up Ltd Companies and bank accounts in their names even thought they diddnt send any of the requested info to allow them to do it"

And....

"I have received two payslips from brooksons, neither match the payment made into my RBS account
The first one, Brookson sent a payslip and told me I had been paid the same, then I recieved a statement from the RBS showing a balence of £1200 more?
Next week payslip from Brookson arrived ok, but Brookson have this time told me that the payment does not match the invoice which it doesent again?
Brookson are going to investigate it for me (Good of them I thought!)

So who knows what's going on, I am probably being paid somebody elses wages, I am sure it will all be sorted out in the end, as long as I have money in the bank (Even if its someone elses) I am not too bothered, I have only transfered what I am due me, out of my RBS account.

The big question is how many cock ups are Brookson presently trying to sort out, their work load could be twice the expected size.
And they may have let some people go?
It has been suggested to me that Brookson might not survive the transition (Go bust)

At least we would then know what was going on.......................we would be on our own."

I`m a bit reluctant to slag them as i`ve had no problems in the past 10 years, but in the past 2 months it`s all gone totally to cock, and they are simply uncontactable. Phones never answered, e-mails never replied to.

I`d prefer an accountant on Teesside so that i can call in and see them when i need to.

Lyons and Co, Yarm Rd, Stockton.

If you deal with John or Mary you wont go wrong. I've used them for 10 years and hardly spent any time in jail.

Speaking as someone who understands the new managed services company legislation, you are much better off with a local accountant as there is a risk that continuing to have Brooksons etc as your advisor could have HMRC see you as a managed service company and tax you on a PAYE basis. You will need you own seperate Prof indemnity isurance though.

"I jumped ship in March over to a Ltd company, as all Brookson seemed to be bothered about was being IR35 complient - f_ck everything else." still chuckling at this one - IR35 is pretty key as to how you are taxed.

Who do you reccomend Tommo

T4Tomo Posted on 30/5 15:25
re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

I'm based in London and aren't a contractor so no specific recommendations, other than a generalist accountant / tax advisor rather than an outfit that purely push tax solutions for ltd compnay contractors.

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

T4Tomo - All Brookson seemed to be arséd about was patting themselves on the back, saying what a great job they were doing being an IR35 complient company.

Lad who I work with was, without warning, put on PAYE one week as they deemed him to be a risk as he was with the same company for too long. First he found out about it was when he received his pay slip.

Even though there is no definition as to time scales and the whole IR35 legislation is one big, grey fuzzy area.

As a company, who you pay a reasonable amount over to every week, you would expect a decent level of service? Or would this be too much to ask. Did'nt feel I got this from Brookson.

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

T4Tomo - agree with you. If you are not IR35 compliant, you might as well shut your Ltd Co and go PAYE anyway.

Thing is, will a normal High St accountant be as good at making sure you are IR35 compliant as someone like Brookson are?

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

Archie - probably not, but HM Treasury and HMRC's approach to drafting the legislation has forced everyone down this route.

That said there are probably loads of contrcators out there that brookson and the like deem to be outside IR35 that are nothing of the sort if you looked at what they do on a day to day basis.

You could try Cousins and Co. who are based in M'bro... They may or may not be taking more people on, but I'm sure if they aren't they'll be able to put you onto someone else....

ask to speak with andrew lee or alan cousins

You could try Benson Wood and Co who are based at the Stockton end of Yarm Road. I used to work there and they have a lot of contractors accounts and tick all the boxes as listed above. The senior partner is a decent fella as well.

re: Recommend An Accountant Please (Contractors)

If you need to present your accounts to get a mortgage then the companies often insist on the books being done by a certain type of accountant, make sure when jumping ship that you have that base covered also.

With the new legislation in place, I thought there was precious little you could do anymore regarding IR35 and any Tax loopholes?

I am no longer on contract, having pushed for (and got) a brilliant deal with my employer, basically £5-7k away from what I would have earned after tax as a contractor.

I'd be interested to know what is available, not for the present, but good to know in the long run - just in case my wanderlust returns!
