I think this site was better years ago when numbers were smaller and so it was a bit more intimate and easier to have one debate rather tahn several sub-squabbles. Maybe there was a higher level of education too and a consensus on etiquette.

There is no doubt it has dumbed down now, become ruder, repetitive and more profane and that it is harder to make a point through the white noise.

But the internet as a whole is far better, with more resources, easier links and searches, well researched and written blogs from the whole spectrum of political and social interests and the vast expansion of numbers on-line have made it far more potent tool than just an cyber talking shop.

the internet has reached saturation. When you have joe bloggs setting up a myspace and telling his friends what he like to have for tea and how many wank s he's had this week you then realise that it's time to step back.

It's getting like that one here. Full of teenage kids and people telling everyone how good they are. If you're that fkin good you;d be on a beach now smoking a big fat cigar and drinking a mojito cocktail, not fkin about on here talking about carverys and trying to snare a bit of minge.

This site hasn't been improved in any way technically. You say it's got worse but it's only got more users. That's the way of the Internet. If this site had the ability for admin to properly ban people, to move threads into categories and lock duplicate threads, it wouldn't be a problem.

He signed an exclusive deal with Guido last week according to this site, I doubt he'll ever have to pay for a haircut ever again. In fact, I think he's secured the future of his family's haircuts for a long time.

Trod: yes I agree that a better format would solve some of the problems caused by sheer volume but there has been a definitive cultural shift too.

I think with more people you get a higher number of morons. There was a certain element of manageability about the numbers before. You could get to know everyone and a large proportion of people knew each other prior to the board.

I do think that this site is ineffective at discouraging trolls and once people notice this, they exploit it.

I rather like the way that this site has barely changed over the years, has very dated functionality ,and runs as reliably as a 1980s Alfa Romeo.

Like the Alfa, it gives it a certain charm and character.
