Computer help/Trodbitch etc etc

My CMOS battery needs replacing on my computer, i have just bought one, is there something i need to do with my settings or do i just need to replace the old one with the new one?

Just swap them over. If your cmos is not working, it won't be saving any settings.

The only thing you need to do (and this isn't 100% necessary) is remove the CMOS clear jumper on the motherboard after you swap the battery over because sometimes the settings can get screwed up during the swap that you have to reset the settings manually like this. Like I said, this is not 100% but if you find you are getting some strange problems afterwards, reset the cmos - it'll tell you how to do it in the manual which you should be able to get online.

A mate had to do it once because even if he changed the boot order setting, it always went back to default.

So you think i'm ok with the way i have done it then? i wont loose anything on my computer,? everything seems to be working fine at the moment.

Just out of interest, what does it do apart from keep your date and time etc.

You'll be fine.

Sometimes with a pc, you may need to change settings in the bios. For example, I have disabled hyper-threading as it actually causes problems with some applications I use. If I didn't have a cmos battery, I'd have to change that setting everytime I switched the pc on.
