Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

Although not wishing to knock what he's achieved but what is his meteroic rise to fame based on. I assume this guy was not born on an inner city council estate and spotted by McClaren scouts twocking weaving through the streets of Liverpool? Or is his Daddy a very wealthy well connected individual in the mororing world. Dedictaed this victory to daddy is apt, very apt I suspect!

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

His dad worked two jobs to help pay for his karting. Ron Dennis took an interest and started sponsoring him with a view to him driving for McClaren

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

He comes from a normal background, his Dad took on two jobs to pay for Hamiltons early karting career. Later on Ron Dennis sponsored him in the karts and brought him through the McClaren ranks. This guy is not a silver spooned rich kid at all, the complete opposite in fact.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

I have to admit I thought he would be from a rich background. Wonder how he fits in with all the rich kids on the circuit

He's from Stevenage, which can hardly be described as "posh".

His dad worked two jobs to pay for his carting.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

Very much the real deal.

You can see how much Alonso is rattled at the moment.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

It's been an amazing start to his career.

Good luck to the lad, he's made F1 slightly interesting.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

So the assumption is that you can't be talented if you are from a privileged background? How wonderfully working class. Well done to the "poor lad" who benefitted from Ron Dennis' millions as opposed to his daddies millions.

Drivers get drives because of who they know and/or who sponsors them, but they still have to have talent. You don't just get into an F1 car and drive it quickly without knowing what you are doing.

I don't want to undermine what he has acheived. It is phenomenal, and there is a real chance he could make Schumacher look average in years to come, but he got his drive the same way they all did.

Good luck to him, and the other brits obviously.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

Not many of the recent British F1 driversh had anything other than a working class background.

I recomment reading Perry McCarthy's book (Formally "The Stig" of Top Gear). He had possibly the shortest and least successful F1 career in history, but his book hilights the amazing lengths that some drivers go to to get to the pinnacle in their sport.

Obviously a few will get there by being rich, but talent and hard work often prevails.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

I assume there is a pre-agreed irony on this thread concerning the spelling of a certain proper noun?

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

Jenson Button could n't get the Honda in to gear on the start line, he had to be pushed away by the marshalls after the field had left the line.

re: Is Lewis Hamilton from a council estate?

Button is a lemon, he's an also ran, just like Coultard has been for the past 10 or 12 years. Excuses about the car, blaa blaa blaa ....

I've seen Hamilton race in previous motorsport classes and he's always been a winner and a consistant winner at that. He approached Ron Dennis at an awards ceremony to get his autograph and told Ron that one day he'd race for MacLaren .... Ron watched his success for a few years before sponsoring him through the next stage in his career.

Of course he had a lucky break, but if you don't ask .....
