Top 150 singles of all time

About six years ago I started to compile a list of the top 100 singles of all time. It has proved an almost impossible task.
I set myself some guidelines, all tracks must have been an a-side single, released in the UK. There was to be no more than one from each artist.
Almost immediately I started to bend the rules, several b-sides have crept in, and even a couple of US only releases have been included.
The hardest task was to keep it at 100, and also the restriction of one song per artist proved impossible to keep.
So, after much deliberation, I decided to expand it to the top 150 singles - thus allowing duplicate entries from the usual suspects (Beatles, Dylan etc.)

guisborough:

I agonised over Bohemian Rhapsody.

I'm not sure of it was over familiarity - it was certainly in my long list - but I had to excise 20 odd songs, and it got chopped.

I agree it is generally regarded as one of the best singles, but personally I'm tired of hearing it.

bobstermarley Posted on 18/6 23:59
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Sorry to be critical, but your choice of Smiths track is dubious - "What Difference Does It Make", "This Charming Man", "Sheila Take A Bow", "Panic", "Ask" and "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore" are intrinsically better singles than "Girlfriend In A Coma".

Also, I reckon New Order and "Blue Monday" is one of the most influential tracks of the last 30 years and should be in the list.

If we're talking about great singles, as such, I'd have "West End Girls" in as well.

fair doo's. it is, afterall, your list!

would be quite high on my list like, with like likes of
take it easy - the eagles
a view to a kill - duran duran
i walk the line - johnny cash
and roundabout - yes

bobstermarley Posted on 19/6 0:07

It'd be great that -

"Tonight Matthew, I'm going to be...... Sabrina"

bobstermarley:

You're right, The Smiths deserve 2 entries (Panic for sure)
and Blue Monday is an oversight - I had it in an earler list - it MUST be re-instated.

I will re-jig the list and post a new one.

Good work - to do what you've done in just six years is a glorious achievement; almost perfect. Only criticism I have is that you have incorrectly attributed the song "All the Young Dudes" to Mott the Hoople, in fact the song was a solo hit for the late great Bruce Dickinson, shortly after the band split and he went solo.

the best single of all time was "dont you want me" by frankie played in the areana in 1993 when dancing on the bar with a huge titted women who i dont know the name of but would have liked to.

3 songs I consider top notch which are not in the list.

Maria - Blondie - IMO the best POP song ever made.
Echo Beach - Martha and the Muffins - timeless.
Revolt into Style - Bill Nelson - not sure what category that fits in.

I don't see the relevance of whether its a cover version or not. Quite often even the version that is universally thought of as "original" is actually a cover version of an obscure song.

A good cosmopolitan list.

All the better for no Bohemian Rhapsody!

Nice to see The The - Uncertain Smile and The Church in there.

Agree it needs Blue Monday.

And also the Go Betweens would have to be there, for me (Cattle and Cain, Bye Bye Pride, Spring Rain or Finding You)

Given your other choices fastcakes I was surprised with your Bunnymen selection. Dancing Horses was my least favourite. Rescue, The Back of Love, Killing Moon, or The Cutter would be there for me.

Good list though!

Saddo!!

re: Top 150 singles of all time

Ambition is anything but tuneless.

And I've just spotted something on there that I thought only I had heard of

Who is Innocent? by The Out. I know nothing about this band, except that I saw them support John Cooper Clarke in Nottingham in either 1978 or 1979, that I saw the single in a shop a few days later and bought it and that, therefore, it is in my record collection. Haven't heard it for years.

And I'd go along with What Do I Get?

London Jinx:

I think "Fairytale" is such a standout track (it has even merited a documentary on BBC3!) that it had to go in.

Can't say I've heard the Sinead/Pogues thingy - that's the problem, it can only ever be a top 150 of all the singles I have heard!

was "Sympathy" ever a single? To be honest, I find it rather repetetive, despite the incediary lyrics.

I think "Satisfaction" lyrically trounces Paint It Black.

A perfectly good rock song - but is it THAT good?

Gomez-Whipping Piccadilly

Richard Ashcroft-well, anything(not talking The Verve)
Heard his solo stuff, saw him live, still think Bittersweet Symph wipes the floor with the rest...

Doves-There goes the fear
Excellent song, got all their albums, might have made top 500

Westworld-Sonic boom boy

Proclaimers-500 miles orig version(you would get hung up here for not having that on the list)
Great singalong, but doesnt stand repeated listenings

James-Sit Down
Good shout, might be in top 250

Inspiral Carpets-This is how it feels
I know some of their stuff, dont recognise it by the title

Suede-Animal Nitrate
Funnily enough I had "Positivity" in and pulled it at the last minute, no space you see...

Robbie-Angels

Indeed. Subway Sect were notoriously 'patchy' live, though I never saw them myself. The great Vic Godard is still around and still plays from time to time. Known in these parts as 'The Singing Postman' because of his other life as a, well, postman.

As for The Out. I'd never heard of them before that performance and I've never heard of them again. As I recall, the single was on a fairly big label, so they must have impressed someone. I wonder if they, or part of them, went on to be something else who we have heard of?

The Out single was on Rabid, a small indie that had Slaughter and The Dogs on and several others I cant remember at the mo.

afaik there were no members of The Out that made it famous..

there's a link here to a band called The Backsliders who released a cover version of the song:
http://www.nkvdrecords.com/backslid.htm

and with the wonders of google, here is a link to news of a new album by the songs writer, including a re-recording of said tune.

Bollox,I despair at pop music, most of it is in the charts, or charted, not because it was good, because it had excellent distribution from rich companies. The Rolling Stones and Beatles are my case in point, both groups ripped of American 60s RandB. Look at Elvis, he watched Roy Hamilton (black Elvis) and stole his style, and vocal style, he even admitted to this, however, Elvis and the other lot tick the pop boxes.

Cover versions. Crikey.

I'm surprised when you say the single was on Rabid - although John Cooper Clarke started there so it's not surprising. See also: Jilted John. I'll check my copy out ce soir. Might even give it a spin.

Thanks. I might look out for it myself.

I dug out my copy last night and played it for the first time in at least ten years. Still as good as ever.

In fact it was on Virgin. I wonder if they were originally on Rabid, were spotted and the single was then brought out on Virgin. A similar thing happened to Jilted John.

re: Top 150 singles of all time

After being stung by a comment above about the lack of black artists in the list, I thought I'd do a bit of calculating.

Black acts make up 26%, therefore white artists make up 74%

I don't think this is too unusual, considering I am a white male, and that's another thing, I have only listed 6% of acts that are either female or have female singers. Don't ask me why that is, but its not helped that one of my all-time favourite is Joni Mitchell, but I struggled to find a single that I could include, despite her producing many brilliant albums.

Also, as far as decades go, the list breaks down thus:

1950's - 1 1/2%
1960's - 34%
1970's - 46%
1980's - 22%
1990's - 6%
2000's - 1 1/2%

The 70's win out, but that's not surprising, as this decade has the double whammy of both punk/new wave and the great acts from the early part of the decade (Bowie, Roxy Music etc)

Finally, I really wish I could find a place for Sparks - This Town Ain't Big Enough For The Both Of Us, maybe Pilot will have to go.

re: Top 150 singles of all time

It's very subjective, but did you consider Alternative Ulster by Stiff Little Fingers and Holidays in Cambodia by Dead Kennedys?

I was a bit amazed that I would probably have 20% of your songs on my top 150, but my formative years for music were 77-80, listening to John Peel 10-12 on Radio 1 etc.

The Jilted John on Rabid was hard to get hold of in the summer of 78, Peel played it and EMI got hold of him very quickly.

My Buzzcocks choice would be Boredom, but it was on a EP called Spiral Scratch. I probably still have 15 Buzzcocks singles and the same for Jam.

Jam - Strange Town

I'll stop there

fastcakes Posted on 21/6 19:03
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Redwurzel:

You're right, it is subjective, and it would be odd indeed that anyone would have exactly the same list...but as you say, there is a core of around 30-40 on the list that almost pick themselves.

As for SLF, I always preferred "Suspect Device" for some reason, although it's a close call - it was indeed on my "long list" before I started pruning it to 150.

I'm afraid The Dead Kennedys are a blind spot for me, it's probably my fault, but I lumped a lot of that early 80's stuff together (Oi, Cockney Rejects, Kennedy's etc) and musically, I had moved on to Human League, The Smiths, Prefab Sprout, that kind of thing. There's very little punk that I rate that wasn't produced 76-80.

Good call on The Buzzcocks "Boredom". it certainly would qualify - and was in my long list.

Mind you, it still doesn't excuse you from missing out Blitzkrieg Bop. (=(_8^(1))

tees tripper:

You're probably right on those two - good calls.

I didn't select Teenage Kicks because quite frankly I got a little tired of Peely raving about it, I began to question my judgement. Even so, I still think it will only make my "bubbling under" pile.
Nirvana? Like Arctic Monkeys today, I struggle to see the attraction of Nirvana, despite almost universal praise from all quarters.
I suppose there is an argument that this particular song was such a massive influence, but, as I am 51, I feel it's for a different generation - I can't relate to it - it comes across to my ears as a rather leaden thrash - not without charm of course, but to scale the dizzy heights of a top 150, it has to offer me more.

smoggyramone:

damn good call. There's a distinct possibility that if I was starting to compile the list today, rather than 6 years ago, that The Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop would have been in there at the start, personally speaking, that song was responsible for me leaving the awful disco band I was in and inspiring me to start a punk band.

The Pixies
Procol Harem's Whiter Shade of Pale
Led Zeppelin
ONE Doors entry but TWO by Genesis???

The Men They Couldn't Hang should be in there-Ironmaster or Green Fields....

The Pixies - haven't really heard anything by them, my fault.

Genesis/Doors - it was a toss up. What do you nominate for the 2nd Doors track?

Led Zepellin - remember, its a list of singles.

Procol Harum - is in there! under "P"

Cecil -

SLF? Its a list of SINGLES so can't have any album tracks, but I will consider Alternative Ulster.

The Men They Couldn't Hang? Never heard anything by them. My fault.

Mark Knopfler's performance on guitar during "Sultans Of Swing" is peerless, I don't care if Dire Straits are out of vogue - this list does not discriminate, class is permanent.

fastcakes, top lists are all very subjective by there nature, especially when their made by one person. Ive not heard of some of yrs and was never influenced by the 1970's like you obviously where. Mr Blue Sky, There she goes, when love breaks down, loaded - can go along with all those but Kate Bush?! Alice Cooper! And Genesis! Thats all pretty awful to me. Many of my faves influenced me when I was growing up - and I'm guessing I'm a fair bit younger than you!. Here's my top 20

clubsource:

Yes, of course it's subjective, and I don't suppose for one second that my list is definitive. It's really on here as a source (sic) for discussion.

There are some dairly obscure stuff on my list, I doubt anyone will have heard of Lucky Pierre, but their single "Idlewood" is a masterpiece.
Alice Cooper was a hugely influencial artist, and Genesis are responsible for the best pair of albums in history (Selling England By The Pound/Lamb Lies Down On Broadway) and as for Kate Bush, arguably the best British female artist ever.

I am 51, so I guess I am older than you.

here's my thoughts on your list:

1 Spirit of ’76 The Alarm
Clash copyists - I prefer the original
2 Love You More Buzzcocks
I've listed the Buzzcocks, but not this one.
3 The Queen is Dead The Smiths
Everyone seems to go for TQID when the Smiths are mentioned, but not me.
4 Ever Fallen in Love? Buzzcocks
The obvious choice, good call.
5 Come Home James
I chose Sit Down. This time it's me being "obvious"
6 Comfortably Numb Scissor Sisters
A desecration of the Floyd classic.
7 Hotel California Eagles
I agree.
8 A New South Wales The Alarm
See #1
9 There is a Light that Never Goes Out The Smiths
I prefer their poppier stuff
10 You Oughta Know Alanis Morrissette
Over-rated one shot Canadian.
11 Move any Mountain Shamen
Generations clash!
12 Blue Monday New Order
I agree.
13 The Size of a Cow The Wonderstuff
Inconsequential pop.
14 Laid James
see #5
15 Don’t Look Back in Anger Oasis
I agree
16 Two out of Three Ain’t Bad Meatloaf
Don't talk to me about Genesis! Meatloaf?
17 Enjoy the Silence Depeche Mode
Never got the Mode.
18 Wonder Wall Oasis
Hasn't dated well.
19 In the Mood Glenn Miller
Good call.
20 California Uber Alles Dead Kennedys
Post punk hardcore is a blind spot for me - I concede

boro 74:

Fine Young Cannibals - Johnny come home
An unconvincing, posey pop band
Lisa Stanfield - All around the world
Nice choice from an under-rated British soul singer
Toni Childs - Don't walk away
Never heard
Patti Smith - Because the night
I love Patti, probably my favourite female artist alongside Joni Mitchell - good call.

It's the top 150 singles, not the top 150 annoying tunes, but then I guess you were being mischevious, you naughty scamp you!

re: Top 150 singles of all time

I am honoured Fastcakes.

NB You Can't Do That by the Beatles was the B side of Can't Buy Me Love - hope it counts!
Check out Jackie by Scott Walker on Youtube. Marc Almond did a version about 10 years ago it's good but Walkers version is far superior

fastcakes Posted on 24/6 14:12
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Mitchy -

Simple Minds?

You're right.

Duly added.

2 more spaces left.

fastcakes Posted on 24/6 14:17
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Fair enough on YCDT, but I would still put many a-sides ahead, "Something", "Let It Be", even "Lady Madonna".

I will check out Scott Walker, in fact I still have a documentary on him on my sky+ that I havent got round to seeing yet.
I have plonked all the Glastonbury stuff on sky+ and found I had only 2% space left, so I nearly erased the Scott Walker doc to make room, but in the end a wodge of Al Murray got nixed.

boro74 Posted on 24/6 18:36
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Terrance Trent D'arby - If you let me stay
Simply Red - Money's too tight (To Mention)

boro74 Posted on 24/6 18:43
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Bad Company - Can't Get Enough

fastcakes Posted on 24/6 20:18
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Boro 74 -

Terence Trent Derby and Joan - a totally over-rated five minute wonder who looked the part, but despite the hormonally-charged big up from Paula, sang sharp and dressed blunt.

Simply Red - Money's Too Tight

OK tune but hardly up there with the very best.

Bad Company - The mercurial Paul Rodgers may well deserve a 2nd entry, and Can't Get Enough is a rocking tune, but I withdrew Free's "My Brother Jake" at the last minute, and that would be ahead of it.

boro74 Posted on 24/6 20:28
re: Top 150 singles of all time

It's hard to think of a good single that's not already on your list. Every time I come up with one and check up, it's already there.

I must be doing something right then!

That's why its took me so long to compile, trying to leave nothing "obvious" out.

rick4974 Posted on 24/6 23:22
re: Top 150 singles of all time

how about metallica - master of puppets, enter sandman, nothing else matters

red hot chili peppers - under the bridge or californication

fastcakes Posted on 25/6 8:21
re: Top 150 singles of all time

rick:

I must admit that Mettalica are in a "blindspot" with me. I've heard them numerous times and seen them on the telly many times but nothing I've heard moves me in any way.

I am baffled at the praise heaped on the Chilli's...they seem to be decent musicians but the quality of the song writing always leaves me shaking my head.

or

"Walls come tumbling down" - Style Council

You spent 6 years doing that? What a pointless fooking exercise.

Grumpy_Paul Posted on 25/6 21:54
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Maybe it's an age thing cos I'm an old fart but surely no all time list can omit Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon and Garfunkle.

Also 'Music' by John Miles

Also 'Meet Me On The Corner' and 'The Winter Song' by Lindisfarne.

Good list though

smoggyramone Posted on 25/6 21:56
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Bugger! yes Music.....shoite!

fastcakes Posted on 26/6 18:05
re: Top 150 singles of all time

Grumpy Paul -

Simon and Garfunkel is in there already!!

Its under S!!

John Miles - Music? absolutely not.

Lindisfarne is a good call - but I wouldn't choose either of those, I feel that there best work was the whole album "Dingly Dell" which I would have in my top 50 all time albums list.

Boro 74:

I don't think Dr. Feelgood produced anything that could touch a top 250.

Style Council? The least of Weller's various phases.

top list mate.

I see its crept up to 50 now!

Sunshine of your love - Cream
Layla - Derek and the Dominoes

Sunshine of your love - a bit of a dirge, always preferred "Badge"

Layla - damn good call, I'll have to sleep on it.

re: Top 150 singles of all time

Oasis - Live Forever

Always named in the top three singles of all time by every music magazine, msuic programme etc. Also how about robbie williams with angels?

fastcakes Posted on 27/6 19:04
re: Top 150 singles of all time

redarmy:

I understand about Live Forever and Angels but I honestly think the Oasis stuff has not wethered very well. Don't get me wrong, excellent stuff, but "Don't Look Back In Anger" is enough.
Angels?
Really nice tune, but Robbie just grates on me, and that is the clincher.
