| top 200 singles of all time (new thread) | |
And so...150 became 200. To make the 200 I have added two artists that should have been in all along, Joan Armatrading (Love And Affection) and Stevie Wonder (Superstition), two worthy additions I'm sure you'll agree. That left one more spot, and I felt I must include the song "Send In The Clowns", the Stephen Sondheim classic. But which version? There have been many, but hardly any as a single. There's the incomparable Van Morrison, with Chet Baker, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxw98-SBhGoandmode=relatedandsearch=%22Send%20in%20the%20Clowns%22 There's Judie Dench, showing hidden talents, here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uH1o4KB2toQandmode=relatedandsearch=%22Send%20in%20the%20Clowns%22 The big hit version is by Judy Collins, and that's the one I'll include at the moment, but there is a version I saw performed on Parkinson in the 70's. Does anyone remember who sang it? Anyhoo, here is the definitive (for now) list of the Top 200 singles of All Time. Any additions from now on will mean one going out. boro74: I will not get rid of the Wards plural, but I will concede Gaye for Layla, although I'm not happy! Clifford T Wards "Home Thoughts From Abroad" has two special meanings for me, firstly it inspired me (along with early Elton John) to persevere with my piano playing, and secondly it was one of me and my lasses "special" songs. It is described by a youtube poster as "possible the greatest love song ever written" so I am not alone (link here) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9G0ENZJLI8 revised list (again!!): ABC - All Of My Heart Joan Armatrading - Love And Affection Atomic Rooster - Devil's Answer Babybird - You're Gorgeous Beach Boys - God Only Knows Beach Boys - Good Vibrations Beatles - Paperback Writer Beatles - Strawberry Fields Forever Beck - Loser Chuck Berry - Roll Over Beethoven Blondie - Hanging On The Telephone Blur - Parklife Bob and Marcia- Young Gifted and Black Boomtown Rats - I don't Like Mondays David Bowie - Life On Mars David Bowie - Heroes Billy Bragg - Between The Wars Dennis Brown - Money In My Pocket (12" version with toast) James Brown - Sex Machine Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star Kate Bush - Moments Of Pleasure Kate Bush - The Big Sky Buzzcocks - Boredom Byrds - Mr. Tambourine Man The Church - Unguarded Moment The Clash - Complete Control The Clash - White Man In Hammersmith Palaise Joe Cocker - With A Little Help From My Friends Cocteau Twins - Sugar Hiccup Coldplay - Fix You Lloyd Cole and The Coomotions - Perfect Skin Judy Collins - Send In The Clowns Arthur Conley - Sweet Soul Music Sam Cooke - A Change Is Gonna Come Alice Cooper - School's Out John Cooper Clarke - Beasley Street Julian Cope - World Shut Your Mouth Elvis Costello - (What's So Funny About) Peace Love and Understanding Elvis Costello - Olivers Army Crowded House - Weather With You The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary Cure - In Between Days Roger Daltrey - Giving It All Away The Damned - Smash It Up Derek and The Dominoes - Layla Dire Straits - Sultans Of Swing The Doors - Riders On The Storm Dream Academy - Life In A Northern Town Bob Dylan - Like A Rolling Stone Bob Dylan - The Times They Are A-Changing The Eagles - Hotel California Echo and The Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses Eddie and The Hot Rods - Do Anything You Wanna Do ELO - Mr. Blue Sky Lorraine Ellison - Stay With Me Faces - Ooh La La Family - Burlesque Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action Fleetwood Mac - Oh Well Four Tops - It's All In The Game Aretha Franklin - Respect Free - Allright Now Peter Gabriel - Solsbury Hill Marvin Gaye - What's Going On Marvin Gaye - I Heard It Through The Grapevine Genesis - I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) Genesis -Carpet Crawlers Grandmaster Flash and The Furious Five - The Message Dobie Gray - Drift Away Al Green - Tired Of Being Alone Norman Greenbaum - Spirit In The Sky Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel - Come Up And See Me (Make Me Smile) Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower Jimi Hendrix - Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) Buddy Holly - That'll Be The Day Bruce Hornsby and The Range - The Way It Is House Of Love - Beatles and The Stones The Jam - Going Underground James - Sit Down Jethro Tull - Skating Away On The Thin Ice Of A New Day Elton John - Tiny Dancer Elton John - Your Song Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Kingsmen - Louie Louie The Kinks - Waterloo Sunset The La's - There She Goes John Lennon - Imagine Lightning Seeds - Pure Lipps Inc - Funkytown Lucky Pierre - Idlewood Luxuria - Redneck Madness - My Girl Manfred Mann's Earthband - Blinded By The Light Manic Street Preachers - A Design For Life Marillion - Lavender Bob Marley - Waiting In Vain Marmalade - Reflections Of My Life Paul McCartney and Wings - Band On The Run Kirsty McColl - A New England David McWilliams - The Days Of Pearly Spencer Steve Miller - The Joker Joni Mitchell - Both Sides Now The Monkees - Daydream Believer Chris Montez - Let's Dance Van Morrison - Brown Eyed Girl Van Morrison - Have I Told You Lately? Good shouts for Neil Young but I'd have to put the Needle and the Damage Done in instead of Hey Hey My My. But it's all about personal opinion, if we all had the same taste this would be a pretty boring thread

njtraf: AC/DC - Back in Black AC/DC - Highway to Hell AC/DC - Dirty Deeds one of the best meavy metal bands, but, generally, I cannot take the genre seriously. Black Sabbath - Crazy Train Black Sabbath - Paranoid Paranoid is a possibility - but there's no room. Billy Joel - In the Middle of the Night Billy Joel - We didn’t start the fire I adored We Didn't Start The Fire when it came out (indeed I recorded a version) but it hasn't dated well. Frank Sinatra - Fly me to the Moon There's a good call for a Sinatra tune, but no room. Jefferson Airplane - Somebody to Love No Lionel Ritchie - Hello Absolutely Not! Proclaimers - I would walk 500 miles Aren't you tired of this yet? Rod Stewart - Maggie May errr...IT'S ON THE LIST!!!!!! Robbie Williams - Angels - I hate it but it is a classic No. ZZ Top - Gimme all your lovin’ Vastly over-rated rubbish Van Halen - Eruption Van Halen - Jump No. The Who - Baba O’Reilly I desperately wanted this in, but it wasn't a single!! The Cult - She Sells Sanctuary errr...THIS ONE IS IN THE LIST!!! Sweet - Ballroom Blitz Good call for a Sweet tune, not quite. Run DMC and Aero smith - Walk this way good call, no space Red Hot Chilli Peppers - Under the Bridge Over-rated band Stereophonics - Bartender and the Thief Stereophonics - Pick a part that’s new No. Ramones - I wanna be sedated Blitzkrieg Bop just shaves it. AC/DC - Whole Lotta Rosie Nice try. B 52’s - Love shack Very good call - if there was a top 250 - it would be in. Guns N Roses - Sweet Child O' Mine Guns N Roses - Paradise City Guns N Roses - November Rain No, No. No.

the boy999: Surely, 'wouldn't it be nice' the Beach Boys, should be in there. I've already got two Beach Boys songs (I think two is the maximum in this list) and God Only Knows and Good Vibrations beat that. Day in the Life - The Beatles? NOT A SINGLE!! Ever fallen in Love - Buzzcocks Too obvious Mr Brightside - The Killers Damn good call, my only reason for leaving it out is it's too new. Cream - Badge I mentioned in another post that Badge was considered, came very close. The Yardbirds - For Your Love Good call!! If I did a 60's only top 100, it would breeze in. Pink Floyd - Wish You Where Here. My god, you only have one Floyd in!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had Money in an earlier version, but it got squeezed out. Anything from Johny Cash! Not really a big singles artist. Bowie - Space Odity Heroes and Life On Mars edge ahead I think. Deep Purple - Smoke on the Water. No Purple at all aaaaaaaagggggghhhhhhhhhh! Deep Puple - Hush Damn right there's no purple. Black Sabath - Paranoid Bubbling under Led Zeppelin - Whole Lotta Love good call NWA - Fook the police. Was that a single? It was either this or "Straight Outa Compton", I chose SOC Allison Limerick - where love lives never heard that one System F - Out The Blue never heard that one Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast Spinal Tap lives... Dereck and the Dominos - Layla THAT'S IN THE LIST!! Please pay attention! The Kinks - Lola Waterloo Sunset Pi55es on that ELO - Mr Blue Sky ITS IN THE LIST!!!!! Cold Play - Yellow Almost certain to be in, but Fix You beats it.

Well, considering i'm a git i'm going to back up my argument, even though i know you wont take anything into account: AC/DC - "Back In Black" - 2nd Highest EVER International Selling Album. Also they are the 5th Highest Selling Band in US History behind The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and The Eagles. In March 2003 they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Van Halen - Guinness Book of World Records title for the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock List. According to the Recording Industry Association of America Van Halen is #19 on the list of Top Selling Artists of all time (having sold more than 56 million albums in the U.S.) and is one of only five rock groups that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the U.S. The band and its best known former members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 12, 2007. Guinness Book of World Records for the highest-paid single appearance of a music group: their inebriated, $1 million, 90-minute set at the US Festival in 1983. Grammy Awards, winning the 1991 Best Hard Rock Performance with Vocal award for the album For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge. Guns N Roses - The hit ballad "November Rain" became the most requested video on MTV, eventually winning the 1992 MTV Video Music Award for best cinematography. Appetite for Destruction appeared in the Rolling Stone Magazine special issue "The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". In 2004, Rolling Stone ranked Guns N' Roses #92 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".[Awards 1988 - Best New Artist - MTV Video Music Awards ("Welcome to the Jungle") 1989 - Favorite Pop/Rock Single - American Music Awards ("Sweet Child O' Mine") 1989 - Best Heavy Metal Video - MTV Video Music Awards ("Sweet Child O' Mine") 1990 - Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist - American Music Awards 1990 - Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Album - American Music Awards (Appetite for Destruction) 1992 - Favorite Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist - American Music Awards 1992 - Video Vanguard - MTV Video Music Awards 1992 - Best Cinematography - MTV Video Music Awards ("November Rain") 1993 - Best Selling Hard Rock Artist - World Music Awards

I do not regard "massive sales" as an indication of quality. The Sun newspaper is the top selling paper, despite it being a disguting rag that I wouldn't wipe my ar5e with. You seem to be on firmer ground with the Guns N Roses info, but ultimately it the music that counts, not the votes or sales. Guns And Roses are a perfectly competent rock band, but we are talking here of the best singles of all time.

I think that you've done a sterling job there fastcakes and fully justified your choices. I am not going to disagree with YOUR choices because they are exactly that. I would have had to include Squeeze somewhere (Cool for cats?/Up the junction?) and Dire Straits made a big enough contribution to have, maybe Sultans of Swing, included.

Fastcakes - a great eclectic cross reference of music. There is some great stuff that to some, will always remain undiscovered. How do you go from Keith West's 'Teenage Opera' to say, This Mortal Coils 'Song To The Siren'? I would consider sectioning myself if all I ever listened to was what was in the top 40. Currently loving discovering Mountain and the fattest ever shyt-hot guitarit Leslie West. Nantucket Sleighride - massive intsrumental 'chorus'.

smoggyramone: thanks. My rule is that there are only two types of music, good and bad. I try not to think of "boxes" when it comes to music, therefore the list veers from one style to another, but no one could argue with the quality of the music. Mountain, ah the memories! I actually covered Mississippi Queen by them way back in 1975 with Adamanta Chubb. (link to Mountain playing it below)
