Smog_Side_of_Life Posted on 28/6 20:36
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

A great example of why I dislike these idiots is when I was sat at a table in the pub last week and these two women next to me were puffing away like a chimney and the smoke was coming straight in our direction.

I polietly asked them not to blow smoke in our direction and they looked at me asif I'd just insulted them. They stoppped in the end though.

If you want to smoke do it outside or at home, we shouldn't have to breath in your cancer smoke.

Smog_Side_of_Life Posted on 28/6 20:41
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

It is selfish for somebody to smoke around other people. I wouldn't be allowed to get a gas canister, go to a pub and spray the chemicals that are in cigarettes around the room. I'd get thrown out.

I was quite disturbed the other day when I seen a mother and father pushing a pram (one of those where the baby faces the person pushing it) and they were both smoking and blowing it in the baby's pram! Unbeliveable.

Around 11,000 people in the UK die as a result of passive smoking, enough said.

TynemoothMag Posted on 28/6 20:53
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

princess..........you dont have the right to harm other peoples health, and thats what you do when you smoke around people in a pub, at work, in a resteraunt etc, surely thats not to difficult to understand surely?

Smog_Side_of_Life Posted on 28/6 20:55
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

If people want to be fat does that affect me? No except maybe I have to wait alittle bit longer in McDonalds.

If people want to not wash does that affect? No except maybe I won't want to get in a lift with them.

If people smoke does that affect me? YES. There are dozens of cancer causing chemicals in smoking, so you puffing away at your fag in public is putting me and other people at risk.

So what if you pay your taxes. So the estimated 11,000 lives a year lost to passive smoking isn't worth asmuch as the the taxes you pay? Selfish.

Well breathing in smoke from your cigarette causes cancer, so what does you breathing it out going to do? Magically filter it for people who then breath your smoke in?

List of just some of the chemicals in cigarettes:

Carbon Monoxide: a poisonous gas found in high concentration in cigarette smoke (the stuff which coughs out of car exhaust pipes)

Formaldehyde: used for pickling things in jars;

Acetone: found in nail varnish;

Ammonia: used in fertiliser;

Hydrogen sulphide: smells of rotten eggs;

Polonium: a radioactive component;

Arsenic: a killer poison.

Oh no how silly and 'racist' to think that these could possibly be dangerous to people...

"It's just lyrics from an Editors song."
Fair enough.I have no problem with gay people. But you get people not wanting smokers to be able to access the NHS as they have a self induced illness.Whereas smokers probably for for the NHS 3 times over.
Smog side of life.I dont want this to resort to a slanging match. My point was I dont know if theres a link between passive smoking and cancer, and neither do the scientists.
I feel that this ban is a very heavy handed approach, and that people should have the choice to be in a smoking environment if the choose.I enjoy smoking, my mates do as well,I dont smoke where people are eating, and I dont blow it in peoples faces

Smig62 Posted on 28/6 22:08
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

BoroMutt,

You are assuming that I am a smoker. I'm just challenging the opinions on here based on the cancer research I have been privy to.

I agree that it is "unpleasant antisocial and the majority want you out of their pubs and restaurants" but that isn't the reason why it has been banned.

I don't mind playing devil's advocate on this.

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

BoroMutt,

I agree with you that smoking isn't cool and certainly isn't clever. It should be actively discouraged.
Your analogy to drugs is correct, tobacco should be a classified drug and dealt with that way, but it isn't. The government want the money so won't ban it directly. They are effectively forcing smokers to go cold turkey, from a smoking point of view. It could have been handled better.

To say "you've lost" is a confrontational attitude which doesn't really help. Shouldn't we be trying to implement a system that encourages people to stop smoking rather that a "feck you" attitude? It doesn't work with drug addicts so why should it work with smokers?

chorleyphil Posted on 28/6 22:28

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

What is the problem with licenced smoking venues where the punters going in and the people taking up employment are fully aware that smoking is permitted ?
I'm sure if they don't attract smokers they will soon close. Supply and demand ??
Both Ireland and Scotland have had reduced alcohol sales of 7% since smoking bans were introduced. Sales of cigarettes have shown no real fall. What will be taxed further to take up the slack

Anyone taking up a career in the licensing trade say, 5 year ago, knew that pubs were smokey.
Who would take it up as a career now, with an immediate drop in takings?
I know I would'nt

So its all about the people in the trade, how noble of smokers to forgo thier own welfare for the sake of the licenced trade and the NHS.

Self serving bull - you are going to be inconvienienced (sic) and therfore think its OK to winge. Just shows how addictive those little things are if they can influence your behaviour (not go out with friends) to such an extent.

Give em up and get on with your life.

I gave up smoking 3 years ago and tbh i can see both sides but i believe smokers do get a raw deal, it was legal when they started smoking now it changes and you have to cope.

Although with ICI on our door step it does not matter if you smoke or not you breath the same shiit in everyday

Smig62 my grandmother god rest her soul died 4 years ago. She was diagnosed with lung cancer and the first question the doctor asked her was "have you ever been a smoker?". She hadn't smoked in her life, but my late grandad did regulary. The doctor then told her it was very likely that this was brought on by years of passive smoking.

Smig62 you are a moron if you belive passive smoking isn't dangerous. Didn't you read the list of toxic chemicals that are in cigarette smoke? Tar, Carbon Monoxide, Polonium, Arsenic, etc. All nasty stuff to breath in especially in an enclosed enviroment. So please do tell me what happens to these chemicals then if they arn't breathed in by others? Do they just vanish? Does every bit get taken in by the smoker, what about what they breath out?

I'll tell you where it goes, straight into the lungs of other people.

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

Muslims are a minority of the population, they kill people every year, should they be banned from being near none muslims?

Isnt that democracy as some of you see things?

Can any of you anti smoking facists please tell me why there shouldnt be smoking pubs in every town, one at least, the staff sign a waiver against future law suits and the customers are happy to spend their time in the smoke filled environment and none smokers can have all the rest of the pubs?

Seems sensible and reasonable to me but perhaps the rabid anti smokers wouldnt?

We provide special arrangements for minorities throughout most facets of British life, why not smokers? Particularly when they could be catered for in a way(above) that would not harm those who didnt want them near.

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

It'll be funny when one of these non-smokers whose gf/wife smokes, wonders where they are after 10 mins stood in the pub and she comes in with her skirt tucked into her g-string after all the smokers have roasted her.

OnAMission5 Posted on 29/6 15:43
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

In Ireland a lot of the pubs have actually become busier since the smoking ban came into force.

The myth that the pubs will be empty is nonsense. Believe it or not, people have now decided to go to pubs more because it is smoke free!

Before anyone moans, I was a long term smoker until last Friday when I knocked it on the head. Im pleased about the public ban as I can now go out for a drink without smelling smoke and having the urge to smoke! I know a lot of smokers who feel the same about it.

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

smallmindedcranks -

I'm not an anti-smoking fascist but I could give you a reason why you couldn't introduce a smoking establishment as you describe. Place your suggestion in front of a solicitor who specialises in employment law and see what he says about it?

smallmindedcranks Posted on 29/6 16:12
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

Red

I dont know enough about the law to say if this would be an option, though other people are allowed to work in personally hazardous conditions if they agree to it - asbestos removers as an example, why shouldnt the same be applicable to workers in smoking pubs?

marskeunited Posted on 29/6 16:13
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

As a smoker, I can fully understand why the ban is happening, but enforcing it in clubs, especially big ones like the Empire is going to be a lot of hard work like, which makes me think it might have been a better idea to just ban it in pubs rather than clubs.

Loads of places seem to be putting shelter and them heaters up outside anyway, after a year nobody will give a toss anymore so it's all a load of fuss over nothing really.

Yes, because legally it is untenable. You cannot sign anything that takes away your statutory rights. The first time a non-smoker who worked in such an establishment went to court the employer would lose, simple. Once you have outlawed it there is no halfway house. The truth is that in a few years time there may still be some very large settlements made because this legislation has taken so long to bring in.

And as to whether it will be difficult to enforce, experience from Ireland and Scotland would tend to suggest that after a few weeks to bed in there will be wholesale compliance.

RedSectorA Posted on 29/6 16:22
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

I think that it comes down to the fact that it is now against the law to smoke in the workplace, and you couldn't get anyone to sign a waiver that is in contravention to the law of the land. The removal of Asbestos is down to the fact that it exists because it was used at a time when it was not realised as being dangerous (or it was known but they didn't care - don't want to discuss that one). With Asbestos, the substance itself isn't illegal, but the use of it in construction is. In this case you could get someone to sign a waiver to say that they agreee that they are working with a hazerdous substance, but being around asbestos isn't itself illegal.

** Too slow **

I work in Scotchland and although a non smoker, I was against the ban cos u gotta live and let live. However, its really great to drink in a pub now and unexpectedly, smokers prefer it too. All smokers say its great that their clothes don't smell.

smallmindedcranks Posted on 29/6 18:41
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

Would it not have been possible to write an exemption into the law when it was first voted upon, as for example the exemption that exists for the House of commons bar if i am not mistaken?

TynemoothMag Posted on 29/6 20:51

small minded crank.............the ban on smoking extends to all areas of the House of Commons, smokers have to go outside and use the terraces.

Bet you can't back that fact up with proper proof.

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

As a non-smoker who has many smoking friends I wish some of the above smoker-cyber-warriors had their attitude which is just get on with it
If they need to go out for 2 minutes for a fag so be it
If they need to take longer between pubs so be it
They'll give us the money when it's their round and so be it
It'll save them queuing at bars
Although as the smoker-warriors say the ban on smoking - which could possibly renamed the ban on smoking in enclosed public buildings - will result in all pubs closing down soon there will be no queues anyway

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

Tyne can you confirm this with some sort of link to legislation?

Even if it isnt the case that you can smoke in the house of commons bar, there most definitely is an exemption for smoking in prison. This means prison officers come into contact with passive smoking surely?

Therefore what would be the difference between staff at a prison working in 'smokey' conditions and willing bar staff working in the same?

re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

So an exemption would have been possible and would have made 30% of the population free to enjoy a beer and a smoke if they wished, good old new labour, they look after minority terrorist groups but 30% of the British population dont get any consideration.

smallmindedcranks Posted on 1/7 10:28
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

Link doesnt work but will take your word for it.

Still doesnt change the fact prison officers can work in smoke filled environments so exemptions were possible, thus meaning a smoking pub in each town would have been possible.

But at least the criminals can have a ciggie when they want, your law abiding citizen cant.

TynemoothMag Posted on 1/7 10:53
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

They can only smoke in their cells, as its their home while seving a sentence, army barracks are also exempt for the same reasons as are care homes, however that does not give the right for staff to smoke.

smallmindedcranks Posted on 1/7 11:01
re: Only a few days untill the Smoking Ban

My point being Tyne, the prison officers are allowed to work in a smoke filled environment so there are exceptions.

TynemoothMag Posted on 1/7 11:05
