Alkmaar confirmation

Boro have confirmed that they will play top Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in their only pre-season friendly at the Riverside Stadium on Saturday August 4 with a 3pm kick-off.

Alkmaar will offer the stern test Gareth Southgate will be looking for just a week before the 2007-08 Barclays Premier League season kicks off with the visit of Blackburn Rovers.

Alkmaar, who missed out on the Dutch title on the last weekend of last season, held Boro to a goalless draw in Holland when the two sides met in a UEFA Cup group match two seasons ago.

Ticket details will be announced at a later date.

Meanwhile, fans travelling to Austria for Boro’s first pre-season games will be interested to know that ticket details have also been confirmed for the friendly game against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday July 17 (7pm kick-off local time).

Adult tickets for the game, which takes place in the Thermostadion, will be priced 20 Euros for seated areas and 13 Euros for standing areas, with children’s tickets just five Euros.

Tickets will be available from the information office in Bad Waltersdorf. They can also be reserved by email on or by telephone on 0043 03333 3150.

Ticket details for the game against Schalke 04 in Bad Radkersburg on Saturday July 14 (6pm local time) are not yet available, but it is understood they will be available at the ground on the day of the game.

Boro XI line-ups will later play friendly fixtures at Burnley on Saturday July 21 (3pm), Darlington on Tuesday July 24 (7.30pm), Hibernian on Saturday July 28 (3pm) and Carlisle on Tuesday July 31 (7.45pm).

I wonder if there is any connection between this and Boro's current attempts to buy an Alkmaar player.

re: Alkmaar confirmation

I went to the Carlisle v Boro game a couple of pre-seasons ago and there was a young lad playing an absolute blinder in midfield. His passing reminded me of Mendieta, his tackling shades of Bryan Robson. I checked afterwards and his name was Lee Cattermole.

And therein lies a message for kids to follow.

Don't take drugs at pre-season friendlies. It's not good for you.

The Dutch have a strange aversion to crossing the German border, curiously the Germans have never suffered the same affliction to crossing into Holland...

8/9 years ago I went to a pre season freindly at SJP - Newcastle v Juventus. Someone I know had a spare ticket and i had nowt to do that nite.

Anyhow Juve played acomplete reserve team - I didnt know any of their players and still won 4-3 or something. It aint the name that matters its the strength of the team
