Sportsman turns its back on Boro

Yes the Sportsman pub in Eaglescliffe had probably the greatest pub sign in the world. Someone somewhere has made a terrible decision to turn their back on heritage and the local football team.

The homely pub has had a corporate style makeover and
their rightly famous John Hickton chest band pub sign has been ditched in favour of a bland generic sporting theme.

End of an era rather than an errea.

How sad.

Outrageous

That said, i don`t think that Hickton sign has been there that long. Don`t recall it being there in the late 80`s when i used to visit the Railway station a lot......

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

No I don't think it had either Archie. But still it was something to be celebrated - how many other Boro pub signs are there?

Had heard rumours it was going but was shocked when I looked up and it had been replaced on Sunday.

It's a bit like Cleveland Centre becoming The Mall - feels like a door has been slammed in your face.

They can put up any sign they want - it will always be the Cleveland Centre.

I hate change for changes sake.

they should auction the old sign...

Just another example of a shocking missed opportunity by the Boro PR and Marketing dept. etc ad nauseum....

The Sporties is my local, and I've made my feelings clear!

The old sign is still out the back. Well there are two of themn actually. I'm currently in negotiations regarding them.

what ever happened to all that stuff in the ayresome park pub and how did they get hold of it all so easily?

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

Gravy, You gonna set-up some kind of underground boro pub with the signs if you get them?

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

Ayresome Park pub - the first landlord Dave Stokes? outbid everyone at the Ayresome Auction. It was pointless bidding against him. I stuck my hand in the air the one time he didn't bid and ended up with toilet signs.

His original intention was a museum upstairs inn the pub.

I'm pretty sure the fella that converted the Ayresome Park pub loaned some of the stuff to MFC for them to display. I know that Dave Stokes took some of the memorabilia to Saltburn when he had the Vic - not sure where it is now.

You could be up against fellow bidders g_b

Sas - The Ayresome Park pub bought a lot of stuff in the closing down auction and relied on memorabilia from general anoraks

Have just been speaking to a third person that has been talking about bidding for the signs.

I'd prefer they put them back up. Terrible decision.

Get yer bloody mits (mitts?) off Shaun!

I've thrown my hat into the ring, but the landlord, Gary, was pretty non-commital. I'm working on him though.

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

Actually, I was in there the day after they took them down, and there was a bloke in wanting them.

But it was nowt to do with John Hickton, he just wanted them because there is a train in the background!

Is there 2 up for grabs though gravy? Are you after both?

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

Its just getting a bit of revamp sas, what with smoking ban and everything. Think they going to start doing food.

There are 2 shaun, and would love them both, but I think Gary is wise to the fact that they will be popular. I haven't spoken money with him yet.

..."it was nowt to do with John Hickton, he just wanted them because there is a train in the background!"

It wasn't just John in mid penalty run-up was it? He did bear more than a passing resemblance to a speeding freight train.

re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

What a shame the sign has gone. It's the only reason I'd ever really want to go in there. I'd say pub refurbs are a scar on the conscience of society. The gradual erosion of any character whatsoever from our public houses is terrifying.

"They can put up any sign they want - it will always be the Cleveland Centre."

Can we not just knock up a Cleveland Centre sign and replace the Mall sign?

what about knocking down the cleveland centre altogether??

collo1875 Posted on 4/7 21:01
re: Sportsman turns its back on Boro

ive never heard anyone refer to it as the mall
same as i have never heard anyone call teesside airport by the durham type name
they can change what names they want but the people from that era will always use the old / original name

Used to love going in the Ayresome Park pub on the lash, all the lads would be suppin away and I'd be wandering around looking at all the old pictures and memorabilia. Shame it went.

An update for those that are interested....

One of the Hickton signs will be put up in the bar, the other one will probably be auctioned, but nothing decided as to when yet.

Lots of interest though, and there will no doubt be some high bidding going on.

I'll post on here if I hear anymore.
