No Boro Commentary On Century This Season??

It was announced on the Legends last night that Century would be covering all Sunderland games live this coming season.

Someone rang in and asked Bernie if this meant that Boro games would no longer be covered, and he said he didn`t know!! He said he is waiting to hear from Century bosses as to what is happening. I`m surprised it`s up in the air this close to the start of the season.

If they drop it will Bernie quit Century and join up with Gatesy again for a new show on the BBC???

Probably air it on a different frequency as they do with Newcastle games.

Cant see them going to BBC Cleveland as they already have commentary rights with Paul Addison and Gary Gill (I think)

They can do that as they have only two available frequencies for the north east one for the northern transmitter and one for the south. I think the Boro and Century are over

re: No Boro Commentary On Century This Season??

Seems strange if thats the case as they signed a 3 year contract to cover Boro games only last year

I hope Bernie doesn't complain about the Boro leaving things late in the summer before sorting things, in the future.

re: No Boro Commentary On Century This Season

Century have been trying to get Newcastle for a long time and with Sunlan in the bag, they might not feel the need to do us.

That said - with TV matches etc, the chances of all 3 of us playing at the same time are quite small and if 2 play at once, then there is the split frequency option that operates at the minute.

Guyb, they already have Newcastle!

Actually Shaun the contract for the commentary on the games is only for one season at a time. The 3 year contract was for the Legends.

As far as i`m aware they have two frequencies.
If Sunderland are on one, and Newcaste the other, i can`t see how they can continue to cover Boro.

Would the BBC take on Bernie and Ali?
No their biggest fans, but it would be odd for Brownlie not to be covering the games somewhere.

Maybe it's:

Boro - Century southern transmitter
Newcastle - Century northern transmitter
Sunderland - the new regional 97.5 Smooth FM

All owned by GCap Media.

Tfm have already approached Ali and Slaven if they can secure the rights.

I very much doubt TFM want the commentary.

When TFM used to have it they were abysmal. Terry Cochrane was trying to break the record for the most times anyone has ever said "at the end of the day".

re: No Boro Commentary On Century This Season

Tfm spent 2 years trying to get the rights. They were poised to take over from Century who appeared to be moving away from football altogether. Then at the 11th hour there was a call from Tfm's parent company Emap - we don't do football commentary. They had made all the running and had to back down when they almost had it in the onion bag. So Century were in again almost by default.

Tfm would have to wonder if Emap would relent and give them the nod now - they would be insane not to as their station is 3rd after Cleveland and Century in our area in the ratings and Jeff Winter and Dave Easson have done so well on the local football. But the big bosses don't always make the rational decisions.

re: No Boro Commentary On Century This Season

Boro commentaries really do prop the station up, and are responsible for a massive part of their audience in the south part of the region. I'd be somewhat surprised if they allowed themselves to lose it. Then again, things change, and the current owners (who really did start the ball rolling in the first place to some extent) tend to usually stay ahead of the game on these things, and if they forecast there's no longer a market for it, they'll get rid of it in a shot...
