Scholes 1st now Carragher - retire from Eng!

I put Scholes and Carragher in the 'old style professional footballers category' talented blokes who give 100% in any match they play, straightforward honest decent Englishmen.

Its a great concern that Carragher is now following Scholes into premature International retirement.

There must be something fundamentally and dreadfully wrong with the England setup/structure if players like these two take the decision to give up!

Maybe they see club football as more important and want to prolong their careers at the clubs they love?

I just dont go with that club vs country lark, not for Scholes and Carragher, i reckon they see the greatest honour is to play for their country.

Scholes retired early under Sven and Carragher following suit under SMAC.

Its just not right.

Perhaps, Just perhaps Carrager thinks:

Left Back: Bridge and Cole are better than me
Right Back: Nevill and Richards are better than me
Centre Back: Terry, Ferdinand, Woodgate are better than me

As he isn't first choice maybe he sees it as a waste of effort to go to the meeting etc when he could be resting for vital Liverpool games.

We have a wealth of centre back talent so not a great loss.

I wouldn't read too much into it. But people will no doubt use it as a stick to beat "SMAC" with if its true.

Carragher is no great loss to the national side. I suspect the fact that he realises that he is never going to be a regular has some bearing on his decision.

He seems to throw himself about a lot. To make up for poor positioning perhaps?

He's never done much for England and never will, 5th choice centre half at best.

hes been awesome for liverpool for years and is probs sick of playing a bit part of england. all that travellin to sit on the bench would f00k me off after a while.

Carragher isn't good enough to play for England. Blatent attention / media seeking from a limited footballer. Not a patch on Woodgate, Ferdinand or Terry.

Carragher has hardly played for England - no great loss. Can't see why it even warrents a press release.

How old is he?

30 in January.

I dont see it as simple as 'better players keeping him out' so he gives in. People like Carragher dont do that, he can play in 2 positions at least for England, there are always situations with injury, suspension, club commitments which mean the door would never close.

I'd like to know why Carragher is making this decision?

re: Scholes 1st now Carragher - retire from E

Why not? It seems pretty obivous to most people. Or is it a case of wanting to knock McClaren some more.

I'd expect squad players who are in or around their thirties to be cast aside anyway. If you haven't secured a first team berth by then you never will.

Its not about knocking SMAC.

I think its an unwelcome development which i'd like The FA to explain.

ps - pls note SMAC is planning to meet Carragher to 'talk him out of it'.

In similar news I have also withdrawn my services from any future England games.

re: Scholes 1st now Carragher - retire from E

Lots of players retire early from international football, there doesn't have to be anything wrong. Maybe Carragher enjoyed him 6 weeks off and has decided that summers off are what he wants in the future. Its not as if he's an England regular anyway and isn't likely to become one now.
