| One billion Yanks! | |
Those Yankees have done it again. After going through my life believing, no make that, knowing that a billion is a million millions they come along and decide that a billion is a thousand millions!!! What makes it worse is that we have went along and now agree with this stupid notion.

i always thought a billion was 1,000,000,000 one thousand million so was i wrong, and on the same level as the daft americans? lol

A British billion is a million million. A US billion is a thousand million. A British billion is so large, it is rarely useful.

Any chance we get to say 'do the math' and we'll exploit it. BTW, 1,000 x 1,000,000 = 1 billion. Calculator says so.

It should be called a Gigapound

| re: One billion Yanks! | |
just to be pedantic, the numbers aren't differant, just the terminology to describe them. I actually think the Yank way is better, there is little or no reason to use the british billion. It is easier to say 'nine billion' (US) than it is to say 'nine thousand million' (British). They are totally wrong with the whole z's everywhere and pronunciation of aluminium and oregano though!

'nine billion' (US) than it is to say 'nine thousand million' (British).' Which just proves that its 1,000 x 1,000,000

This is all well and good and that but the fact is that when I was at school a billion was a million millions and along come the illiterate Yanks and make up their own figures and we just say yeah okay, we'll change it just for you Mr Yankee. Why not stick to our guns and tell them they are wrong?

Because deep down it makes more sense really, I personally think centre and metre maker more sense spelt as center and meter. Just about the only things in America that do make much sense though.

It's been agreed for a good while now surely. I grew up thinking that 1 billion was a thousand million.

I must be older than you Tom and missed out on growing up.

Well, I use the term 'grew up' loosely.

Why do we have to be called "daft yanks". Were has all the love gone? Like LASpur says 1,000x1,000,000 = 1,000,000,000 You guys can call it what you want, no one is making you change. In the US we just say 1 billion dollars, have never heard anyone say one thousand million.
