FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

Paper tickets are a thing of the past for Boro season ticket holders.

A small group of season ticket holders will be the first to try out Boro’s new smartcard season ticket access system at 11am this Thursday (July 19) at the Riverside Stadium.

The credit card-style plastic smartcards will replace the traditional paper season ticket books for Boro’s forthcoming 2007-08 Barclays Premier League campaign.

When shown to card readers installed close to the turnstiles, the smartcards will allow season ticket holders to access the stadium easily and quickly.

The new system will increase speed of entry into the stadium through the automated turnstiles, which are activated simply by placing a card into the electronic reader.

Turnstile operators will be stood close by to assist and advise any supporters who encounter access problems.

Known as radio frequency identification (RFID), each season ticket holder’s card will be loaded with stand, block, row and seat information, together with confirmation that the individual has paid for his ticket.

The smartcard will also enable season ticket holders to buy ticket for cup-ties at the Riverside, as it will be remotely activated when a supporter books a match either online, by phone or in person at the ticket office.

Boro spokesman Dave Allan said: “The new smartcard system will benefit both the football club and season ticket holders. While season ticket holders will benefit from quicker access and the easiness of purchasing home cup tickets, the club will be less likely to suffer from fraud as the cards cannot be copied, while fans who have been banned will not be able to gain access.

“Another great benefit of the smartcards is that season ticket holders will never again require a paper ticket to gain access to the Riverside. They will now be able to order tickets for home cup ties in the usual manner and their card will be automatically activated.

“If they are not allocated their usual seat for a cup-tie, then their block, row and seat number will be sent to them either via text, email or post.

“In the long run, the new smartcard system will allow us to introduce further benefits for loyal supporters, but we believe season ticket holders will find their card a big step forward from the outset.”

For 2007-08, non-season ticket holders will continue to be issued with paper tickets, which will include a barcode to allow entry to the stadium when presented to the card readers. Cards are likely to be introduced for all fans in the future.

The new system has been developed by Middlesbrough FC in conjunction with Fortress, whose football customers also include Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester City, West Ham, Wigan and both Inter and AC Milan.

"Turnstile operators will be stood close by to assist..."

I think they mean 'standing close by'.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm planning on getting to the Riverside about two hours before kick off against Blackburn on August 11th, to avoid the carnage.

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

Yep, I think I'll get there early too.

I understand the other benefits, with cup games and loyalty points, but will it really speed up entry? Surely it will take just as long if not longer to slot you card into a machine, as it would to tear out a ticket and give it to turnstile operator...no?

What about match by match ticket buyers?

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

Just another example of the club alienating the fans.

I have used a season ticket since getting into the premier league and I love the feel of the paper, together with the passion showed by Teesside Insurance Services in there advert on the back of the book.

Also, I use the season ticket book to keep a copy of my fixture list in, and to look flash while out on the town after the game, adding to the bulge in my trousers while in Secrets.

I will call Bernie tomorrow night and demand that Lamb comes on the legends and justify the reason for binning the season ticket. If he won’t, it’s just another example of the club keeping the fans in the dark.

Why change now after 30 years?

Sack the baord

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

who says it's got anything to do with speeding up the process of getting in??

got bugger all to do with it, more to do with saving money on having to print out tickets each season, convenience for fans having just the one card etc etc...Who knows, coud be the used for the 'loyalty card' that so many fans want as well, easy to keep track of away tickets/merchandise bought...

anyone know if the card you are issued with is yours for life and just gets updated if you renew or is it new card each season

and stepper T, can't you read :-)

Says so here fatharry, I know it's probably only a small thing, but still, I don't see it making any difference.

'When shown to card readers installed close to the turnstiles, the smartcards will allow season ticket holders to access the stadium easily and quickly.

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

I'd like to think they're looking at eventually integrating a 'loyalty points' system now they've got the proper technology to do so. No mention of it yet though.

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

I think the speed is of little benefit really.

lets be honest, it's got more do with saving what little money they pay turnstile operators a season.

they might be around next season but i doubt they'll be around for 2008/09

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

It sort of hints on to that by saying further benefits in the long run. I'd imagine that is what they are thinking of doing.

Turner_86 Posted on 18/7 19:46
re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

They'll still need someone on each turnstile though, otherwise you would get people squeezing in for nothing.

I bet they have at Liverpool anyway

One step at a time Mr I.

I know City had a lot of problems when this was brought in at the CMS.

Every pay as you go ticket will be for child

ccole Posted on 18/7 19:49
re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

Speeding the entrance up is a big plus point for me as I often get there at 2.50.

Also saving to be had with a reduction in operators. If a ticket is reported lost, it will be just canceled and worth less the same day.

Good move by the club.

re: FANS WELCOMED TO BORO’S CARD SCHOOL!

"while fans who have been banned will not be able to gain access."

Because obviously it'd be impossible for a banned fan to take his mate's card to the game.

Surely this'll make it easier for adults to buy kids tickets and swipe them in as the turnstile guy doesn't need to see the ticket if the person gets in okay, they're only there if you don't know how to use it.
