About 10%, I would guess. Even in London, the built-up areas are only 60%.

re: Q. what % of land is covered by housing

I would say around 15-20%, maybe less. When you consider the size of the North Yorks Moor, Yorkshire Dales, Peak District, Lake District, Dartmoor/Bodmin Moor etc that's a huge amount of land that has the odd house scattered on it.

You could fit Greater London, Greater Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham all inside of East Anglia/Norfolk which is for the most part farming land.

It's reckoned that less than 5% of England is covered by road.

re: Q. what % of land is covered by housing

houses in england cover just 1.1% of the land.

there is a campaign to free up more land, but inorder to do so planning permission laws have to be changed and adjusted.

presently the laws are worded in such a way that we (the people) are having to live cheeck by jowl with each other in large towns and cities....the basics of the planning laws are outdated and 'victorian' to say the least, and came into statute and force , surprise ! surprise !, by the land owners and for want of a better word the ruling classes.

by the way there are 13 Million hectares of land in England.

re: Q. what % of land is covered by housing

I think something like 3% of the land across the world is covered by housing, which is nothing.

re: Q. what % of land is covered by housing

I heard somewhere recently that it is around 5% but that around 75% of land in England is totally useless for building on. So of the land that is useable about 20% is used so far.

(It could have been the UK not just England that the programme was on about)
