Roy of the Rovers - Comic

How I used to love the day my Dad brought me my weekly Roy of the Rovers comic (possibly a Tuesday), Think it will have been late 80's when I read it, wonderful story lines such as:

-A hole in the pitch opening up;
-Roy leaving the pitch mid match when he thought of somewhere his run-away son may be.

There were other stories in the comic too:

- Hot shot Hamish
- Billy's Boots
- Goalkeeper - I recall him being third choice keeper for his club, yet never conceeded a goal. How good must the first two keepers have been!!!

Anyone think of any others?

I remember the hole in the pitch - it was from the story Tommys troubles. Last year I was clleaning out the folkes loft and I found them all again from 1976 to about 1981 and hundreds of Tiger comics also. Every saturday afternoon they used to come.

Roy must have THE all time record for scoring the most goals in injury time. normally with a volley to the top corner.

Remember the players? I can only remember another four;

Tubby Morton in goal
Blackie Grey
Vernon Elliott
Jumbo Harris

Ben Galloway was manager

I remember one ROTR strip in an annual which had a storyline about some bloke having grazing rights on their ground so he took a flock of sheep on the pitch.....

It is out of print now, but there is a Roy of the Rovers, The Playing Years book out that covers each season from when it started in the 50's to 1993.

It doesn't have every strip, but includes key games and moments and relives highlights of the season.

I don't care that I am a 'grown-up' now, I want it, I want it, I want it!!!

I've got the Roy Race Playing Years book!

It is a good dash through the history of the guy - but it makes you wonder... for a guy to have been playing at the top level for so long - what was he taking?!!!
