I generally class someone with too much makeup, angst, and spray on jeans as an emo.

Teenagers with scruffy, bedraggled hair that covers the eyes, darkish clothing (not quite Goth but more Green Day), reading Kurt Cobain's diary, have Dawson's Creek style 'issues' that they can't talk to parents about and listen to stuff like Smashing Pumpkins. Emo is an acronym of 'emotional', I think. They seem to have come from the indie scene.

alledgedly it means Emotional Hardcore, and developed from hardcore punk. They now look more like Goth rejects. Wattie Buchan out of the Exploited would just have called them a bunch of coonts.
