PC Experts - XP SP1/SP2 Issue

Anyone,

Been asked to update software on my old mans laptop, it's probably 3/4 years old.

It has XP SP1 on.

I downloaded and installed XP SP2, once thing I hadn't checked wad the hard drive size, there was only 200MB left so I took off SP2.

Re booted the laptop and now it boots up and then re-starts on a continues cycle, any idea what I do next?

can u boot into safe mode?

hit F8 before windows starts booting to get the menu that lets you do this, after its booted to safe mode, restart normally

was able to get to safe mode selection, but the laptop still didn't boot up.

Also options to debug and boot up at last time it worked.

Neither booted up.

Any ideas?

can you boot to safe mode with command prompt

and then run checkdisk?

basically you boot to DOS and then type chkdsk

not looking good, does it have recovery console installed or do you have a windows XP set up CD, you can boot to "recovery console" and run chkdsk from there

Not sure if it has recovery console installed, how would I know?

I will have to ask my Dad if he has the CD - was hoping I would be able to sort it with out him knowing. He is a worrier when it comes to computers!!!

I'll check out the link

Thanks again

I appreciate the help from P_D over the weekend.

Do any of the weekday techies disagree?

Not had chance to shout me old man for the CDs - I am still grasping at the slimest of hope I don't have too...

Spoff while waiting for Trodd, check the make of hardisk and go to the manufacturers website. Most have a download to make a bootable disk 'health check' and repair, if that is the problem. If the manufacturer does not do one specifically then use the Hitachi version which appears to be universal. Failing that it really does seem like you will have to run the recovery from a Windows CD.

re: PC Experts - XP SP1/SP2 Issue

How do I check the make of hardisk without opening up the laptop?

Otherwise I'll have a look for the hitachi one tonight.

Cheers

re: PC Experts - XP SP1/SP2 Issue

Depending on the make of laptop they are usually just plugged in to the machine on the side and secured with one or two screws. The DELL's are like that and just unplug when the machine is powered down. Most makes of laptop have online instructions for removal. You need a bit of research if it is not obvious. What make is it?

It's a fujitsu siemens. Not sure the model, can have a look when I get home tonight and dig round the internet and see what I can find.

Cheers for the info.

re: PC Experts - XP SP1/SP2 Issue

do you have a USB hard drive caddy? you could then plug the problem hard drive into a working computer and run chkdsk that way

do you have any USB devices plugged into the broken laptop that could be stopping it from booting?

Spoff_MFC Posted on 24/9 10:34
re: PC Experts - XP SP1/SP2 Issue

"USB hard drive caddy" no idea what that is so presume not!!!

There is nothing, but power, plugged into the problem laptop
