Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

In this day and age what is the advantage of moving the clocks back/forward? I HATE IT!!!!!!

I know they say it's for the farmers, but this makes no sense to me as you see farmers out in their tractors through the night in the feilds as they have big floodlights now.

It causes more chew than enough, here's a few examples;

1. Dark earlier so kids walk home from school in the dark which must be dangerous.

2. People with health conditions who have to take medication at set times, that screws them up.

3. Diabetics, screws there eating times up.

4. Young kids get up even earlier.

5. Lights go on in the home earlier thus demanding more of the national grid.

6. You have to reset all the clocks in your house.

So, can anyone in here give me a good reason why we do it? apart from some of us get an extra hour in bed.

It's an Act of Parliament, it was passed because they wanted to annoy a guy called dibzzz and thought this would really blow his fuse! Seems they were right!

I think it's really to allow schoolkids to go to school in the morning when it's light. If we kept the clocks the same then in December it would n't be sunrise until about 9.15 am

dibzzz Posted on 28/10 7:23
re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

Well they walk home in the dark instead.

This 'Act of Parliament' thing seems do do other stuff that winds me up, the list is endless, can't believe they really put so much time, effort and money into winding me up, mind you I wouldn't put anything past Brown like, I'll be found dead in the woods next.

But it's not nearly as dangerous then because in the old days we used to have ice and frosty mornings to start our days. Anyway, what schools come home at four o clock, most finish between 3.15 and 3.45. Plenty of time to get from the schoolgates to the 4x4.

It's a conspiracy by the liberal elite trying to prove their theory of global warming. It creates an extra hour of daylight, raising the average tempeature.

Winston_Spangler Posted on 28/10 13:00
re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

You get the extra daylight in the morning though don't you? So instead of walking home from school in the dark the kids would be walking to school in the dark.

It's for farmers in Scotland.

re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

I'm pretty sure there was a 3 year experiment in the early 70s when they didn't put the clocks back. All I remember about it was that it was pitch black going to school in the mornings and they made us all wear ludicrous orange reflective armbands.Anyone else old enough to remember it?

re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

I'm not joking, it was originally done for farmers in northern Scotland and it's just stayed that way.

re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

You would thing they would ask us to change our clocks at a reasonable hour....Im not getting out of bed at 2am to put my clock back.
Why cant they change it to dinnertime then we can have an extra hour in the pub?

Arthurs_Horse Posted on 28/10 18:48

had this conversation yesterday
and we came up with in the early seventies when we all had to wear those fluoresent sashes was because of all the power cuts with the electric
i dont think it has changed (the clocks going back / forward) since the twenties

re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

People say it's for farmers but I really don't get how, I'm not sure at all how it can help farmers in any way by turning the clock back an hour. Surely they could just do everything an hour earlier and we can all be happy!

Wasn't there double summertime or summat...I'm sure as a nipper going to school in the dark at 8.30am...even gave us fluro armbands.

Collo.
Just looked this up and there was an experiment from 1969 for three years with not putting the clocks back.
The evening powercuts were also in 1970 so it was a double whammy and no wonder that our parents and teachers seemed obsessed with covering every possible surface with reflective stickers. We were all given identical dayglow orange plastic drawstring bags for our swimming stuff with a space to write in your name in magic marker.

re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

It is for the farmers who have to get up early even on weekends. This way they get one lie-in every year.

The_DiasBoro Posted on 29/10 10:18
re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

Sadly I can remember that time. I wish I'd bought shares in whowever made that dayglo material. And the dynamo on my bike became illegal. A setback for renewable power generation.

BoroTommo Posted on 29/10 10:33
re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

the farmers really don't mind whether it's dark in the mornings or not, as it doesn't matter if they have to turn a light on to open their cheque from Brussels for doing fook all.

jiltedjiff Posted on 29/10 13:26
re: Why do they put the fooking clocks back?

Nowt to do with kids at all.

The clock change at this time of year is merely to reverse the effect of the hour forward in March.

We have now returned to GMT where we should be. BST throughout the summer is an hour ahead of GMT.

The question that should be asked is why put them forward an hour in March?

However the side effect of the kids having light when they go to school rather than when they go home is an interesting one.

The morning school run coincides with the rush hour going to work whereas the return from school is usually at least an hour before the rush-hour for coming home from work. So it does make snese to have the ebtter light in the morning.
