It's only fashionable to have a go at Middlesbrough for low attendances.

Post this on the Skunks TOTT and you will get a ton in replies. They love "attendance speak" up there in Jockland. Did you know that 52,000 fans turn up to watch them every home game, now I bet you didn't know that, did you?

Wimbledon hold the record for the lowest premiership attendance, less than 4,000 if memory serves me right.

To be fair to Bolton, there are a lot of teams surrounding them competing for supporters. We have a much bigger catchment area for fans.

If we were in Boltons' position, your manager had left in the summer, new manager sacked, then Gary Megson appointed while you were bottom of the league.......how many would we have at the Riverside?

20k tops.

Quite amusing listening to Martin Tyler mention the crowd stat but not mentioning live Tv coverage as a factor,or that the pubs would be busy of supporters watching the game and having a few drinks and a Sunday roast for less than the cost of a ticket.

"Is Bolton a bigger town than M/bro?"

"Bolton pop 139,301"

A clubs catchment area isn't made up of just the town the team has its stadium in. Even the likes of Bolton have a sizeable fanbase in neighbouring Bury who have a league club of their own!

So you should really mention the likes Rawtenstall, Chorley, Salford, and even Bury which Bolton Wanderers no doubt take their fair share from (along with the other league clubs in the general area), thats another 200K in them towns alone.

Someone asked the question is Bolton a bigger town than Boro? I gave a rough estimate of towns pops, I personally couldnt care less about whos area is bigger, We have an area of over 320,000 and to expect 35,000 to turn up twice a month isnt to much to ask really..

It is if most of them couldn't care less about football...

In the entire 131-year history of MFC our top flight average is 25,165. Yet because we had 2 or 3 seasons a few years ago with 30K+ average gates people think we should have them for evermore!

Even if we were a consistan top 6 side every year we wouldn't sustain 35K average gates. The new stadium, exciting new foreigners, and post euro 96 novelty wore off a long time ago, and with it went the 10,000 band-waggon jumpers.

re: 18,000 at Bolton today, lowest ever Prem

As a small town competing with major cities in a football league we more than pull our weight in terms of attendances.
For a town our size to get 27,000/28,000 supporters on a regular basis is a statistic to be proud of rather than ashamed of.
The only reason anyone is questioning our support is because we managed to pull in crowds of 35,000 for a few years which was remarkable and unpresidented for a town of our size.

The game was on TV, rainy sunday, Bolton Villa FFS - 18K they did well getting that many.

Boro would have go about the same.

Lamby will be the one pulling his hair out (ok I'm speaking hypothetically). He said Teesside will get the club it can AFFORD. And so we are. A Championship side.

Spot on!

The constant media snipes at us, and the thick as fook skunks and mackems who have nothing other than the old attendance card to play when it comes to having a pop at us has unfortunatley brainwashed too many Boro fans into the same way of thinking.

"Lamby will be the one pulling his hair out (ok I'm speaking hypothetically). He said Teesside will get the club it can AFFORD. And so we are. A Championship side."

I wouldn't swap Gibbo or Lamby for anyone else to run the Boro but the biggest mistake they ever made was extending the Riverside stadium from 28k (or whatever it was) to 35K. If the ground had kept its original capacity we'd have near enough sell outs every week and no one would ever have a go at Boro for their so call poor attendances. And Lambys comments wouldn't even have ever been made. Remember the guys a salesman trying to drum up custom for the product he's selling so take his words in that context.
