fish and chip connoisseurs...

i only have them about once a month, and they always taste like, well, fish and chips

re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

Pat do you eat in any normal places, where prices are reasonable, or do you always insist on paying top whack to fill your gut?

I mean, the Magpie, it must be the dearest fish and chips in the North East.

Although, you probably have found an even more expensive place.

re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

Not had them for a while. Its very difficult to find good fish and chips in Middlesbrough. But I'm off to Whitby on Saturday so will be tucking into some from Mr Chips, and they'll be very nice as ever.

Azedarac Posted on 6/11 10:29
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

Has anyone ever been to a chip shop in Ireland? For an extortionate amount of money you get a serving that would fit inside a crisp bag.

tacker Posted on 6/11 10:53
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

The Wetherby Whaler is out of this World, whenever we (at work) go there on a bit of business we always make sure theres time to stop off there.

I had some on Friday on the way to Blackpool, stopped off in Kirkby Stephen and walked into the chippy there which seemed to be stuck in 1988, but charging 2007 prices. The plates, cups, cutlery, decor was so out dated it was laughable, and to top it off the meal wasn't exactly anything to write home about.

Fatsuma Posted on 6/11 11:03
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

I'm a bit spooked!

Wetherby Whaler and Graveleys - in order of frequency of visit.

Bandi and I may well have been fighting each other at various times trying to get in the door of either establishment first to get the last bit of haddock!

For those visiting the Suffolk coast - may I recommend Mark's in Southwold, or the Flora Tea Rooms at Dunwich.

bandito Posted on 6/11 11:04
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

saw Gareth in graveleys the other week picking up his order. Looked like he had bagged about 10 jumbo haddocks!

Fatsuma or Borotommo: if you are ever entering Harrogate via Knaresborough road then try Drakes. Just edged out by the others, but only just

Fatsuma Posted on 6/11 11:12
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

Is there not a Drakes in Ripon too??

I used to go to the chippy on Cold Bath Road in Harrogate as a nipper! Capy's auntie's, next door neighbour's, postman's Avon lady used to serve me there. Or something!

mufflar Posted on 6/11 11:16
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

People who say the magpie are the fish and chip equivalent of bandwagon Chelsea fans...mis-informed, blinkered idiots!

The Board Inn in Whitby currently do the best fish and chips in the UK...FACT

Downstairs restaraunt(sp?) only...

plymuff_diver Posted on 6/11 11:38
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

But what of the real debate - cod or haddock? (unless you believe Heston Bluminflip and go with Turbot.)

The fish and chips are terrible down here. It's as if they take a perverse sense of pride in it.

Does the chippy in Linthorpe Village (Stonehouse St?) still serve them in newspaper?

joseph99 Posted on 6/11 11:41
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

The Boro Fish Bar on Linthorpe Rd. Used to get pattie and chips (fish was for the rich people) after each night match and simply loved the smell of vinegar and fat, plus all the photo's of Boam, Maddren etc. Great place great memory.

Mattyk50 Posted on 6/11 11:44
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

i prefer haddock, plymuff

T4Tomo Posted on 6/11 11:45
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

Definately Haddock, as Cod is endangered. Turbot is nice but expensive.

Ramsay was extolling the virtues of Pollock the other week. As tasty as cod and in plentiful supply. If every chippy in England switched from Cod to Pollock the Cod stocks in the North Sea would recover.

Our local chippy has Cod cooked and waiting but you have to order Haddock, which is daft.

Is Drakes on the parade just before you get to the stray, opposite (I think) the Broad Acres pub/fighting house?

I know I'm going to get some stick for this but - CHRISTIANS ON THE FISH QUAY IN NORTH SHIELDS IS VERY GOOD. They have their own rawler I think, i may be worng on that one. I used to work just up the road from there that's why i sampled thier delightful food.

From what I remember of that place, they sold, without question, the worst fish and chips that I have ever tasted, bar none.

As far as I was concerned the best chippies in the Boro were Harrington's in Stonehouse St and the one in Essex Street at the Ayresome St end. Both now gone.

Chipchase Road used to be decent but on my last visit home a couple of weeks ago. the chips they sold were appalling, the fish was nice though and a reasonable size.

Barnacles on Linthorpe Road is decent enough.

coffdrop Posted on 6/11 17:22
re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

I told a lie in my last post, there is a worse fish and chip shop than the Boro Fish Bar, it's the Athena in Lime Street Liverpool. Now they are gross, their fish and chips are inedible even when you are smashed out of your skull, which is probably what you are if you ever venture into it.

Magpie Cafe is crap ! Two places in Whitby are The Royal Fisheries, and Mr.Chips.

Good chippy up in Sleights. Another good one in Liverton Mines. The one in Staithes used to be good .. And Richardson's in Thornaby town concrete attrocity was good, not sure if it's still there.

re: fish and chip connoisseurs...

I agree that the Magpie Cafe is crap. How it got into the Good Food Guide I'll never know.

Trenchers in Whitby is the best chippy I've been to. Nice and fresh. Not too greasy. Nice place as well.

Purely based on taste and quality, cod absolutely shats all over haddock. Haddock with fish and chips is just wrong.
