"i know theyre not "under rated", but i still dont think Muse get the credit they deserve,"

I'd say they're the first on my "massivley overrated bands" thread. The stock response seems to be "oh but they're amazing live" as if that somehow excuses the fact that their records are rubbish.

My opinion only mind.

re: Criminally under rated bands

My vote goes for The Cure. They had success, but nowhere near what it could have been if Robert Smith didn't look and sound a bit odd. Other bands like Joy Division are re-discovered by the kids, but The Cure are pretty much ignored. If they'd died in a plane crash in 1992 self-harming teenagers would be walking round in T shirts with pictures of Fat Bob instead of Kurt Cobain. Instead they've made one too many lame comebacks and are held in as much esteem as the bands on that 80s revivial tour. See also Depeche Mode.

i also think Muse are underrated.

i think tehy're brilliant live, but their albums are just as good. i mean you can't be great live if your songs aren't good.

definately don't get the credit they deserve, especially for their earlier work.

Another vote for The Go Betweens here!

RIP Grant!

I'd also add The Chameleons who would both be massive today and piss all over Editors and the other TESCO shelf-stacking guitar bands!

And The Dream Syndicate's Days of Wine and Roses remains one the best albums to have avoided legendary status. Sadly.

Goal_Scrounger Posted on 17/11 12:46
re: Criminally under rated bands

Good to see there are plenty of other Decemberist fans on here. I'll second (fifth?) them as being vastly under-rated.

I'm also going to mention Fountains Of Wayne. Unfortunately, the success of Stacey's Mum has meant that many people have pigeonholed them as a one-hit-wonder comedy act, but they go much deeper than that.

get hold of Welcome Interstate Managers and give it a listen, by the third play you'll find it's like audio-crack, you won't be able to stop playing it.

I'd go with the chorus of shouts for The Go Betweens. I suspect their legend will grow, even though Grant's not around to see it.

The Wildhearts are about the most ridiculously under-rated band on the go at the moment, largely because they have, in Ginger, the finest songwriting talent in the UK. Unfortunately, their capacity for self-destruction has always got in their way.

If you're a parent, particularly one who has been through divorce, give this a listen.

Shack are ridiculously underrated for me, just got the best of this weekend and i'm in love with it. Only had 'waterpistol' and 'on the corner of miles and gil' so i'm chasing the other albums up as a matter of ergency. If it wasn't for the bad luck they could be bigger than oasis in the mid-paced anthem stakes.

The Fall deserve a mention, they can be hit and miss, but the sheer volume of output Smith has churned out over the years means that theres enough quality tunes to fill about 5 albums. Sparta FC is a tune

I think Elbow are the most under-rated band in Britain.

I also thought Mercedes from Hartlepool were fab but suffered badly from having an utterly useless label - they couldn't promote free beer on a match day.

Having just seen Arcade Fire again on Saturday in London and despite them now being the darlings of the 'Culture Show' crowd, I'd have to say they are still under-rated. Their live shows have to be seen to be believed.

Really agree that Depeche Mode never got the credit they deserved. Most people, me included, dismissed them as teeny pop at the time but some of their old stuff sounds better than ever after 25 years and I was surprised to find that my kids and their friends have a few of their songs on their ipods and think they're great.
