RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

Sad news to report...

Marty 'Matey' Powell, singer with late 70s Teesside punk band 'NO WAY' died suddenly from an asthma attack on Friday 23rd November. He celebrated his 50th birthday in the summer and was on great form as ever. Top bloke. RIP.

Worked with the lad many years ago if my memory is correct.

Matey was a sparky? I saw No Way quite a few times.

If same lad, we had some great laughs together.

Sad news indeed.

Does anybody remember TFP, Teesside Free Press. The newspaper produced by Joe Mitchna and Paul Barker that covered that period?

No Way and other bands featured.

Looked at the pics linked by Craig, yep Matey was the lad I worked with and knew.

Sad indeed.

Cheers Craig. Was a great time on Teesside.

Even when we were down, we were never out thanks to the lads at that time.

Matey and I worked together for No Good Bailey's in Peterlee, then we knew each other when No Way done some gigs for Rock Against Racism round about that time.

Great days in grim times.

Only knew him briefly as he was a friend of my girlfriends family.

Only met him earlier this year due to a death in the family, even in those circumstances he seemed like a top bloke.

RIP and condolences to his family and friends

Might have mentioned this before Liddle,I've got a double A side of your band with Discharge on the other.Thats the one with Rise of the mods on.Might stick it on later for a laugh.Did'nt No way play eston rec music festival with Basacx(sic)in 79,I remember that because that was the day the IRA blew up the para's at warren point, also the day they killed Mountbatten.
I never knew the lad but condolences to his family.

"Did'nt No way play eston rec music festival with Basacx(sic)in 79"

I remember that, they got covered in flour, I think kids shot it at them!

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

It was Borobadge's band Discharge that were covered in flour at Eston Rec. No Way and Basczax did indeed play.

A picture of Matey and No Way from that gig appeared on the cover of TPA (Teesside Public Address).

I saw Matey for the 1st time in over 25 years in July of this year when I videoed a No Way rehersal at the guitarist's house in Billy.

He had to rush through the songs as he was picking his son up from training. He told me that his son was winning alsorts in athletics and was he proud as punch.

My thoughts go out to his family.

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

I am genuinely shocked, not seen Matey for years I was his apprentice @ NGB and remember spending the most of one day going through the words of his new song which was Breaking Point, he played it for first time at the Welly same night and dedicated it to me, I still have the single in the loft at my mothers, I was only thinking of him the other day
RIP and condolences to his family

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

No mate,
our name was infinitely more lame! We were known as "Distortion" and we had the only lead singer in the punk annals who stuttered! I knew Bri and his brother through Terry.Canny lads.

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

the S.V's were dISCHARGE before they had to change their name.

Terry came and joined our merry brotherhood later in 79'

do you know how to contact him ?

last i heard of the Jennings brothers they were living down in Bromley and doing v. well as Decorators, i heard they had 30 - 40 blokes working for them.

i havnt seen Heather for over 25 years...id be surprised if she was still in england, u.s.a. or Oz i would have thought.

mickymac Posted on 26/11 21:15

Ah yes,but "Distortion" were Terrys first attempt at punk superstardom! Our lead singer Boney had his Warholesque 15 minutes of fame as he looked not unlike a certin Mr Vicious to the seriously visually impaired!

Hi Guys,

Im the Labour Manager for EIWHS, who Marty was working for.

Just had his brother and sister in law in this morning.

Hope Im not treading on the families toes but seeing as his mates want to pay their respects the funeral is this Friday 30th November, Teesside Crematorium, 3pm.

They requested no black and no flowers, donations to Asthma charities.

Rich.

My other post was deleted again so i'll make this one a quick short message.

A celebration of dads (marty's) life is after the funeral tomorrow from 4 till late at the Dormans, Oxford Road, Linthope, middlesbrough.

It would be nice to see you all, dad was a top man and would like us all to celebrate his life in style (a piss-up).

Hope to see you there.

For the record, Marty got a fantastic turn out. Crowds couldn't fit in the place. The No Way classic 'Breaking Point' played at the end, never sounded greater or sadder. RIP.

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

Alright,
The send off was exactly what dad will have wanted, thanks to everyone for turning up or sending their thoughts.

We're putting together a scrap book of memories that people had of/with dad so if anyone has anything to contribute over the next few months, send me an email (lloydpowell88@hotmail.com).

Also i there might be a tribute gig, with various people singing noway songs with the band. I'll get back to everyone on that.

Cheers guys.
Lloyd

re: RIP - Marty Powell - No Way singer

Yeh, i don't think i've ever seen a full room of people at a crematorium laughing. Fran was brilliant. The funeral director said to my uncle that he'd been doing his job for 30 years and that one tops them all, the reverand was brilliant also.
