I Love JUNINHO

When i read a thread on here that mentions him, my heart goes warm and I know I'm smiling thinking back to 96-97 especially.

The feeling I had when i seen the gazette headline "He's Coming Home" and the pain I felt when he was pictured at Villa Park.

I know he moved on (before you all start with the negativity) but he was quite simply the best footballer I have ever had the pleasure of watching.

I love him, me.

Simply the best footballer I have ever seen play live as well as adorn the precious Boro shirt.

hardwick? legend, but come on.

as for souness and pallister ffs have a word

juninho is the best boro player ever.

To be honest, I'm not so sure that Juninho was the best Boro player ever.

He produced one great season, but the rest of the time could be hit and miss.

Like I say your youth is an excuse for you ignorance with regard to Graeme Souness. He was just before my time, but I recall the great player he was through the rest of his career and I've been told by many people that he was just as good in a Boro shirt over multiple seasons. Rightfully usually regarded as the best Boro player of the modern era. You don't remember him, fine, but don't use that as an excuse to knock a true Boro great.

easycomeeasygo Posted on 11/07/2008 10:00

i didn't knock him, i simply stated that he wasn't as good as juninho.

i've never seen anything quite like juninho, only player who really compares to him is messi.

he's the only player i've seen apart from juno who dribbles with the ball, play clever one two's and just get you on the edge of your seat every time they get the ball.

i know souness was a great player, liverpool, spurs and was it juventus? are testament to that fact but still, better than juninho??

he cant be........surely

Juninho was a world class player for us in 1997.
he was also great in his last season under McClaren.

But when you look at his whole career at boro and elsewhere he never really kept it up. He had quite a few moves that didn;'t work out or struggled to settle in.

Someone like graeme souness was consistently good all his career.

Came home - I take it you mean went home? Which he did as soon as we were relegated, in fact I dont even recall him sticking around for the open top bus tour, unlike that dis-loyal Emerson.

Never wanted to leave - Yet he did, as soon as Athletico Madrid came calling.

last game of season at Leeds proved that - He played well and was upset that we got relegated, but I'm sure he was over it within a couple of days.

That T*** Smac got rid cos he was bigger than him - His spells at Celtic in the much derided SPL proved that McClaren was right to get rid of him when he did.

At madrid, they loaned him out to 3 different clubs.

He was a top player for us in 2 seasons but rest of the time he was not world class. I would say he didnt really fullfill his potential apart from 1996/97 and his last boro season.

No doubting that Souness, Clough etc etc were legends in their day also - and people would have been having aa similar argument then.

likewise in 20 years time the same argument will be had about the players of the time... and the 'old generation' (us) will be harking on about TLF....

I'm not saying he is without faults - every player has them in some regard.

I had his pic as I idolised him as a youngster and still believe he is the best Boro player ever - IMO

lets not have all this bickering over the fact that people have differing opinons eh..

Of course he was. The problem is some people seem to think of flair players as being the be all and end all, some are of course, but ultimately an all round central midfielder of Souness's calibre will be better and more effective than most flair players. Every club would take a Souness over a Juninho. Not even a slight against JuJu of course, but Souness really was top notch. Ask any Boro fan over 40, they'll tell you.

Juno was and always will be a special player to Boro fans and was an absolute joy to watch.

The best Boro player I have ever seen was Emerson, albeit only his first dozen matches, but his 'effect' on those games was beyond belief. Ultimately he was the biggest waste of skin in football, something I hope he regrets, regardless of his wealth.

Career-wise Souness is the best we have had, by a mile.

I was in my early 30s when Juno played and a season ticket holder, cannot rememeber a decent free kick or penetrative corner. Also Zola was better than Juno.

My hero was Colin Cooper, a lad who epitomised the Rioch era and everything that was honest in the game.

I have not posted anything on here to offend, its just as I remember things, but the most imortant thing was Junos face when he or Boro scored, he smiled like a schoolboy and his love of the game shone through, that IMO is why he is loved, it was like watching your son score his first schoolboy goal, wonderful.

Muttley Posted on 11/07/2008 12:27

Mr. Jumpers is repeating the new revisionist mantra of the uber fan. Perhaps he could point out when Juninho rubbished the fans, the area or the club (Merson has had a go on national TV and in the papers at all three)?

Mr. Jumpers also seeks to portray his talks with Villa as some sought of treachery, another interpretation would be that he was a player looking for a move and examining the possibilities? As he was not a Boro player at the time maybe we should cut him a little slack?

I wouldn't go as far as to make him my favourite player of all time in a Boro shirt and I'm old enough to have seen the likes of Hickton, Souness, Pallister etc. (but sadly not Clough or Manion). That accolade would go to Emerson, and yes I know there is a player who REALLY did P*** on the club.

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 11/07/2008 12:31
I Love JUNINHO

Mr Jumpers is actually questioning why so many short sighted fans believe that Juninho was anything other than a excellent player.

Mr Jumpers was pointing out that he didnít "love" the club, nor did he come "home", he merely returned to a club he had a certain fondness for as they were willing to meet his wage demands. To claim that he "loves" the club is an insult to those fans who do genuinely love the club and are prepared to stump up hard earned cash to watch them.

As someone who it is claimed "loved the club and the area" how many times has he been back to visit or watch a game since he left?

Muttley Posted on 11/07/2008 12:33

bit harsh like. hows he going to come back and watch a game when he's still got a footballing career going on? some Boro fans dont take to success well. we win a cup and get into europe and its papering over the cracks. WE have a class talent who shows a genuine affection for the club and he gets compared with a turncoat like merson. Liverpool call Fowler GOD, utd have cantona, we have juninho. and he S***s on zola.

The_Lizards_Jumpers Posted on 11/07/2008 12:41

Because Merson is constantly called "disloyal" as he jumped from a smaller club (us) when a bigger club came calling, much the same as someone who is claimed "loves" the club.

True Merson was vocal in his critisism of the club and Juninho wasnt, which is to his credit. However actions speak louder than words and they both took the same actions.

No not at all, he's a professional footballer he did what's best for his career - fair play to him. However his actions suggest he puts the good of himself far above the good of the club.

Was there ever a rule that said players from Div 1 couldnt play in the world cup, as it seems to be taken as given that he needed to leave in order to get into the world cup.

If he did not stay I doubt very much we would have gained promotion, and lets be honest, Robbos massive tactical and motivational brain was never going to get us promoted.

Plus Merson was a pleasure to watch.

Actions do speak louder than words, and I have no gripe with Juno leaving, he needed to secure his squad place with Brasil.

If your are looking for real loyalty around that time then look no further than Batistuta, he stuck with Fiorentina when they were relagated from Serie A, at the time 'The Bat'was rated as the best striker onthe planet !

Why the hate campaign to our beloved Juninho?

The South American Footballer of the year who came to light up our football team on three occassions, brought moments of joy to all who love the Boro, who has a special relationship with the Boro faithful and rightfully deserves a place in the group of players known as "legends".

I don't really see the need to trash him like this. It seems a very childish and pointless excercise.

Juninho was hardly here in total. 18 month stint, then a 1 year stint, then a 2 year stint. Wonder if he loved the club as much as schwarzer whp was here for 11 consecutive years or festa who was here for 5 concecutive years.

Juninho comes across as someone who would come to boro when nothing else was on the horizon. then happy to leave as soon as teh going got tough. Imagine going out with a lass who dumps you, then 2 years later comes back then dumps you again, tehn comes back then dumps you again. In the end you would finally realise maybe she didnt really love you all that much. Some fans have the "first true love" syndrome with juninho

Bobscat - you rosy eyed fool!

Lizard beat me to it, but never mind. Yes Juninho was great, and world class for 1 season, and will always be a boro hero.

But for fooks sake, we got relegated and he was on the first flight out of here. Said his mam was critically ill, which was then said to be B*******, and had a transfer tied up within days. You can talk about "world cup abmitions" all you want. The simple fact is that he was a part of a relegated team, and left for his own slefish, greedy reasons. And then he came back, yes because he admired the club, but dont forget the whacking great wages and signing on fees. Then, after the cup win, when McClaren said he wouldnt be first choice, he bolted straight out the door again.

He was a great player, but when it came to loyalty he was worse than the much ridiculed Peter Beagrie. At least Beagrie left cos he wasn't being paid and had a family to feed. Juninho left for a convenient reason because he didnt want to play in the 1st division. Take off your rosy geggs and think about what you're saying logically.

"Why the hate campaign to our beloved Juninho?"

Grantus, as a man who's contantly telling us how clever he is why dont you read the posts correctly.

It's in no way a hate campaign, it's merely pointing out how the rosy eyed brigade seem to show far more affection for a player who left, arguably at our lowest point, over 10 years ago than they do for the current squad.

easycomeeasygo Posted on 11/07/2008 13:06

Grantus, if you/we do not have a balanced view on past players, current players will always be viewed as inferior and thats unfair.

The time when you should 'only' discuss a persons positives are when they are are dead, hes still kick a footie around is'nt he, bet he still cannot put a decent corner in though ;-)

I just don't see why him leaving after relegation is so bad. Why should he of stayed?

If we had 11 TFLs that season (not literally), do you think we'd have been relegated?

No chance.

"I just dfon't see why him leaving after relegation is so bad. Why should he of stayed?"

FFS - He didnt have to stay. However someone who genuinley loved the club would have probably chosen to spend a season in the 1st playing for the club he "loved".

No one is questioning his skills grantus, more his love and loyalty for the club. Like mentioned earlier Batistuta stayed with his club in italy when relegated. Don't confuse skill and ability with love and loyalty for the club.

Time for some people to move and let go, it is nearly 12 years since he first arrived. we have other heros to worship now.

Surely Juninho's affection for the Boro is better demonstrated by his relationship with the vast majority of fans, the fact he played for us three times (once straight after winning the World Cup) and his consistently ultra positive comments he's made about the club ever since he first came to play for us, rather than the fact that he left when we were relegated.

Remember that he was under contract, we didn't have to let him go. We recieved an offer that was deemed too good to refuse.

Boro fans are jsut thick. Juninho his more of a hero than schwarzer who was here for 11 good years. Surely you should be more passionate about schwarzer.

Mark Schwarzer - Boro Legend

Juninho was a magician though. The gasps he created from the crowd tended to be of pleasurable disbelief. Schwarzer was responsible for a few gasps of disbelief of people wondering just how he dropped the cross.

Creative players and goalscorers are always held in the highest esteem as these are the best players. It's simple.

There's evidence to suggest he doesnt.

a) He's admitted he was into BMX's more than football as a kid, so they whole "supported them as a boy" myth is blown out the water

b) He signed for their most fierce rivals Manchester United despite other offers.

Are you saying their the actions of someone who "loves" a club?

Sorry TLJ, but that is rubbish, just because he was very much into his BMXing, that does not mean that he didn't support Leeds.

Come on, you're usually better than this.

There is no doubt that Juninho loved both the club and the town.

And we would never have won our only cup without him. He played his heart out right through that cup run where others showed a fainter heart altogether.

Deserves every respect.

It's incredibly arrogant the way that The_Lizards_Jumpers categorically states that a player doesn't love a club. How the F*** do you know how a player feels?

I loved it when Juninho asked his wife to give birth to their second child on Teesside as a gift to him.

LOL! I suppose it was the better option than crossing her legs for a few house on a plane. And how was it a gift? Was it like mary giving birth to jesus and the 3 wise men were there and it was televised on boro tv.

I think juninho was brilliant but it doesnt take a rocket scientist to understand and see your valid point.

One player, gets us promoted and leaves, one plays well but we get relegated and he leaves.

yet one is percieved as a "god" and the other a "villan".

Interesting....
