bandy just brought back memories for me. I was playing when St Gerard's famously beat Viewley Hill 13-4 over 2 legs in 1982.

I was only in 3rd year junior and played left back.

Nowt like sticking it up the proddys.

Our derby was Derwent Street school and I scored a two in a 4-0 triumph. (What was the field behind the Old Vic called?)

The real frightener was going to Coldicotes, they had there own pitch but that was a different world even for Berwick Hills.

Newham Bridge 86-88 were we lost to the disabled school in saltburn ?(Hollywood or whatever it is called) Avenue Primary school 88-90 were I outscored Jonathan Woodgate who pleaded to play up front to outscore me but still couldn't! Jamie Hewitson was probably our best player.

We also had a girl in our team who is now a pro tennis player and a lad who is a pro cyclist.

Marsh Road was always a grudge match.

Tony Drago - Andrew Jackson is an amateur cyclist (although he'll be doing nothing but ride his bike) for a team down in the south of France. He joined Cleveland Wheelers a few years after I'd left them.

I was in St Gabriels 1990-1991, our best players were a lad called Clyburn and a lad called peter duffy both scored stacks of goals, duffy was a right idiot, probably in jail now. we would always beat overfields by at least 6 goals and played them more than once a year. once drew with northlands in the last minute, wayne huiff (spelling) scored a screamer for them from about 30 yards, probably about 15 but seemed miles back then!

Primary School Football Team - Which One ?

Reminded me of this email, probably all seen it but its still worth a read!

Primary School Football Rules:
Does this ring any bells??

Matches shall be played over three unequal periods: two playtimes and Dinner-time. Each of these periods shall begin shortly after the ringing of a bell, and although a bell is also rung towards the end of these periods, play may continue for up to ten minutes afterwards, depending on the "bottle" of the participants. There is a sliding scale from those who hasten to stand in line as soon as the bell rings, known as "poofs", through those who will hang on until the time they estimate it takes the teachers to down the last of their G & T's and journey from the staff room, known as "chancers", and finally to those who will hang on until a teacher actually has to physically retrieve them, known as "nutters". It is important, in picking the sides, to achieve a fair balance of poofs, chancers and nutters in order that the scoreline achieved over a sustained period of play is not totally nullified by a five-minute post-bell onslaught of five nutters against one. The scoreline to be carried over from the previous period of the match is in the trust of the last nutters to leave the field of play.

The object is to force the ball between two large, unkempt piles of jackets, in lieu of goalposts. These piles may grow or shrink throughout the match, depending on the number of participants and the prevailing weather. It is important that the sleeve of one of the jackets should jut out cross the goalmouth, as it will often be claimed that the ball went "over the post" and is thus disallowed. In the absence of a crossbar, the upper limit of the target area is observed as being slightly above head height, regardless of the height of the keeper. The width of the pitch is variable. In the absence of roads, water hazards etc, the width is determined by how far out the attacking winger has to go before the pursuing defender gives up. At free kicks, the scale of the pitch justifies placing a wall of players eighteen inches from the ball. It is the formal response to "10-yards", which the kick-taker will incant meaninglessly as he places the ball.

Playground football tactics are best explained in terms of team formation. Whereas senior sides tend to choose - according to circumstance - from e.g. 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, the playground side is usually more rigid in sticking to the all-purpose 1-1-17 formation.

Stoppages:
Much stoppage time in the senior game is down to injured players requiring treatment on the field of play. The playground game flows more freely, with play continuing around or even on top of a participant who has fallen - or more likely been pushed - over.

Other stoppages:
1.Ball on school roof or over school wall. The retrieval time itself is negligible in these cases. The stoppage is most prolonged by the argument to decide which player must risk life, limb or four of the belt to scale the drainpipe or negotiate the barbed wire in order to return to play. Disputes usually arise between the player who actually struck ball and any others he claims it may have struck before disappearing into forbidden territory.
2.Bigger boys steal the ball. The intruders will seldom actually steal the ball, but will improvise their own kick about amongst themselves, occasionally inviting the younger players to attempt to tackle them. Standing around looking bored and unimpressed usually results in a quick restart.
3. Menopausal old bag confiscates ball. More of a threat in the street or local green kickabout than within the school walls. Sad, blue-rinsed, ill-tempered, Tory-voting cat-owner transfers her anger about the array of failures that has been her life to nine-year-olds who have committed the heinous crime of letting their ball cross her privet Line of Death. Interruption (loss of ball) is predicted to last "until you learn how to play with it properly".

Celebrations:
Goal-scorers are entitled to a maximum run of thirty yards with their hands in the air. But making it 34-12 does not entitle the player to drop to his knees and make the sign of the cross. A fabulous solo dismantling of the defence or 25-yard rocket (actually eight yards, but calculated as relative distance because "it's not a full-size pitch") will elicit applause and back-pats from the entire team and the more magnanimous of the opponents. However, a tap-in in the midst of a chaotic scramble will be heralded with the epithet "****ing poacher" from the opposing defence. "****ing goal-hanger" is the preferred alternative. Applying an unnecessary final touch when a ball is already rolling into the goal will elicit a burst nose from the original striker. Kneeling down to head the ball over the line when defence and keeper are already beaten will elicit a thoroughly deserved kicking.

Penalties:
At senior level, each side often has one appointed penalty-taker, who will defer to a team-mate in special circumstances, such as his requiring one more for a hat trick. In the playground the best player usually takes the penalties but he may defer to the 'best fighter' or if the side is comfortably in front, the ball-owner may be invited to take a penalty. Goalkeepers are often the subject of temporary substitutions at penalties.

Close Season:
This is known also as the Summer Holidays, when the players dabble briefly in other sports: tennis for a fortnight while Wimbledon is on the telly; pitch-and-putt for four days during the Open; and cricket for about an hour and a half until they reckon it really is as boring playing as it is to watch.

Vespa-Scooter, do you remember McKenna? He had a ferocious shot on him for an 11 year old. Usual tactic was to pass to him from kick off and he'd let go,scoring and putting the S***s up the opposition in the process.
McCullum was too 'nice' and would apologise every time we scored.
McPartland -too fat.
Kev 'through his legs' Stevens in goal. Hopeless.
Stephen Mogie was a good player but too 'text book'.
Mike Heath was a canny player.
There was a lanky git called McGowan who could'nt hit a cow's arse with a banjo yet kept getting his game.
The names are coming back to me now.

Used to battle with viewly hill, ah the memories......I remember tony lee, he did manage our sunday hemlington team for while.

Remember going to halifax to watch whitby beat them, were 2-0 down but won with second half fight back, some striker got hat trick i think....cue 30 kids going mental behind the goal! Great day and great bloke

I also remember having a really small football pitch will ridiculously big goal posts, like there was no way an 11 year old could have jumped and got anywhere near the cross-bar. Sure they were made out of scaffy tubes as well!

BoroLad 259, I played in nthose very same kits maybe 2 years before you - they'd had them since the school started (about 1955, I think). Great kits - heavy drill cotton with buttons on the cuffs and collars.
Think I played 75/6 ( a few games) and 76/77 (the whole season unbeaten). Acklam Whin was a good game (year below Gary Gill though played agaianst him for Boynton v Stainsby). Michael Nicholson was their star. Peter Beagrie played against us too many times (at both schools) Great player. The best might've been Ripley though (2 years below me). For me, and I'm sure most who lived there, Hemlington was the best place in Middlesbrough to grow up.
I remember all the names and still see some of them now.
Loads of fields, farms, a lake, woods, a beck, a good school and lots of nice people.
Don't think there's many places like it now and probably never will be.
Trying to think who you are Vespa-Scooter. Nunthorpe? 77?

played one season

Rodney was right we were crap!! Legands in the school yard who never played on a full size pitch, had a keeper who never played in a real size goal, no-one had any real positions...I was centre defence one game, left midfield next then upfront where in our third game we lost 6-1 and I scored the schools first ever goal!!

we never even trained. the manager just thought we would turn up and play like Liverpool(The Team back then)

Dont really remember too many of the games but I do remember one game perfectly
Viewley Hill v St Gerrards in about 94ish
We were down 2 nil down and ball over the top for Gerrards striker, he lobs our keeper, I chased back to try and loop it over the bar just off the line but looped it up the wrong side of the line for an own goal but we didnt have any nets on the goals that day and the ref give it as a corner instead of the goal :D
Cue a massive brawl and arguements
Then we went on to win 3 v 2 with a late winner
Carnage again
Good times!

Northgate School Primary Guisborough (the old one that the tw@ts from the council allowed to be demolished, shame on them)

Anyway,

73-74 (got in as a third year, very weak side)
74-75 (good side, but not as good as a few stronger and better boro schools)

4-2-4 with wingers, no tracking back or making tackles, just beating the full back and slinging it over, inter-mingled with the odd Cryuff turn of course.

Met up at a funeral 30 yrs later, five of the regular starting 11 were there, not bad since 2 died before they made 16.

One infamous penalty miss that is still talked about, but good times with great lads.

Great thread this Marlon, proper footie thread, unlike the ones that resort to name calling, poor form indeed!

Crowborough81 – would that name be in reference to our army cadet days?

Is that the time we spent hours looking for a missing 303 Enfield rifle (when on manoeuvres - cough!!) and everybody was getting excited thinking the IRA had pinched it when it turned out some plonker back at the barracks couldn't count.

Vespa Scooter = PB how do mate – I also have a dodgy photo of you on holiday in Scarborough wearing some skimpy trunks cuddling a man wearing a Rupert the bear outfit!!!

Pat_the_Cat – I think I know who you are but can't relate your name to Pat. Give us a clue!

Marlon, I am one of Anthony Lee's best mates went through school with him and went to his wedding two years ago! I am a mate of Spike his brother and Tony! am 34 in September went to Viewley Hill as well before Coulby Newham!
Loved living in Hemlington left to go t Leeds Uni in 1993 and my mam moved from the house in 97. I still miss the place!

Got lots to tell you I.C.and thank you for convincing me that the three holes at the bottom of the lampost were due to your marksmanship with your air gun.The one without pellets, just pure air,and a steady hand.........and the times i shot at it and i missed,,you monkey.hahaha.
