Mendieta - good riddance

why everyone gets bonk ons over this bloke i don't know, he has blocked up the wage budget and the reserve squad for 3 full years, cost us about 15 million in wages over 5 years for about 5 good games, the biggest waste of money ever, in my opinion, and the last of the 30 something long contract signings ever made by middlesbrough fc

Jonny_Ingbar Posted on 04/05/2008 22:18
Mendieta - good riddance

Wasn't a complete waste of money because he was excellent initially, but never recovered after a bad knee injury.

After that I think it is shameful that he has been happy to play in the stiffs in the last year or so of his career when he could have been playing week in week out in Spain.

offside-again Posted on 04/05/2008 22:20
Mendieta - good riddance

You can't balme him for not moving no one knows what kind of wage cut he would have had to have took but you can bet it was pretty big, it's our fault for paying him, I mean what would you have done ? Exactly stayed and got paid: P

pat_the_cat Posted on 04/05/2008 22:32

Yes I can blame him. He is supposed to be a pro footballer and not a money grabbing wanka.

Yes I can blame him. Happy to p*ss away the final year or so of his football career in Boro reserves.

pat_the_cat Posted on 04/05/2008 22:34

And another thing.
He is no better than these people who would rather sit on their arses and do fook all because the government hand over money to them every week.
Bloke should be ashamed of himself.

The_Dude Posted on 04/05/2008 22:35

he could have left years ago, but he wouldnt takew a pay cut cos us dopey B******s were paying him the earth

Bullshat you would all do the same, as for dole people yeah they must love been on 60 quid a week, your loaded.

Actually no I wouldn't do the same.

So you'd happily move jobs for less money ? Strange.

pat_the_cat Posted on 04/05/2008 22:44
Mendieta - good riddance

I've moved jobs for less money before,in fact, I've done it a couple of times. Quality of life and job satisfaction are a lot more important to me than money.

offside-again Posted on 04/05/2008 22:48
Mendieta - good riddance

Maybe but let me ask you this was it like a 50% or more pay cut b/c that would be the kind of drop Mendieta was looking at, fine if its only say 10-15% but 50% is massive, all of this in a job where your done at 35, I place no blame on him at all, its MFC's fault.

we_hate_mackems1 Posted on 04/05/2008 22:49
Mendieta - good riddance

Bit out of order here in my opinion. 2 Things
1) Who gave Mendieta the years on his contract??? Boro and mendi signed the agreement.
2)Maybe mendi and his family were happy here on Teesside and he and his wife didn't want to move his family about again. He has the right as do you and i to make the choices he made.

The_Dude Posted on 04/05/2008 22:52
Mendieta - good riddance

ive never said he hasnt got the right to stay and get paid for doing nothing, i was merely stating he was a waste of money

and i was right

wasn't i

PodgerC Posted on 04/05/2008 22:53
Mendieta - good riddance

As with all jobs

The club approached him with a contract andhe did what was required to see it through. Best of luck to him and his family.

Winston Bogarde did the same at Chelsea

we_hate_mackems1 Posted on 04/05/2008 22:54
Mendieta - good riddance

Well i'd agree he hasn't really set the world on fire yet neither have other players on monster wages. What about Rocky? all he's ever wanted to do since he signed for us is pi55 off back to lisbon. Good riddance to him i say. At least mendi got his head down and has never kicked up a fuss. Like Riggott. Model Proffesionals imo.

offside-again Posted on 04/05/2008 22:55

The-Dude I agree with that bit !

we_hate_mackems1, spot on.

We can't just go handing out 5 year contracts and cry off when it doesn't work out our way.

AlBoro1984 Posted on 04/05/2008 23:15
Mendieta - good riddance

Blame the club for offering him a 5 year contract not him. He's not a boro fan ffs, if some midtable Spanish team was paying me 50 grand a week towards the end of my career and I was just in the reserves doing nothing I'm not going to walk away from that because I might upset a few fans on a message board.

woman_with_a_willie Posted on 04/05/2008 23:21
Mendieta - good riddance

Depends really though. If he goes on to play for another club for a season i don't blame him, but as i love playing football i'd like to actually be playing in my final year.

He's not exactly desperate for money.

Grumpy_Paul Posted on 05/05/2008 00:21
Mendieta - good riddance

What really went wrong with Mendieta, I'll never know but when he was signed I was as excited as I ever have been in over 40 years a Boro fan.
Playing him out of position so much was a crime. A true waste of sheer class, Smack, hang your head in shame

kernaghanscodpiece Posted on 05/05/2008 00:48
Mendieta - good riddance

Agree grumpy paul. What a waste, playing a great central midfielder on the right.

Tom_Fun Posted on 05/05/2008 02:32
Mendieta - good riddance

Indeed, a massive difference playing 10 yards to the right of his 'natural' position. He would have propelled us into the Champions League if he'd have played 10 yards to the left.

xxlshirts_fit_all Posted on 05/05/2008 02:41
Mendieta - good riddance

suerly we could have paid him half thqat difference to move in a lump sum, we didnt get anything out of him paying him full whack. some club would have got him by only needing to pay half his wqage?

spelk Posted on 05/05/2008 02:47
Mendieta - good riddance

To be fair at keast he ogt his head down, kept fit and actually played in the reserves. It's an incentive to young lads to see a player of quality sticking it out in the reserves.
I am glad he's done now to free up wages though, along with Rocky.

He would have been much better playing in the centre, look at his game when we beat Man U 4-1, he was outstanding in the middles. Look at Arca in the middle when he's really a wing player, apart from the beginning of the season he has been poor. So wasteful with the ball.

Saying it wouldn't make a difference playing a central player 10 yards to the left wouldn't make a difference is just silly. Look at Boateng on the right, does a job but obviously not his natural position.

Bukowski Posted on 05/05/2008 05:03
Mendieta - good riddance

"Indeed, a massive difference playing 10 yards to the right of his 'natural' position. He would have propelled us into the Champions League if he'd have played 10 yards to the left."

To be fair to Mendi, he looked twice the player when he played central midfield and he was able to influence the game a lot more.

McClaren was an idiot playing him on the right for 95% of his Boro career.

Mendieta however really should have found another club two years ago. It's not as if he was hard up, so money really shouldn't have been a huge factor for him. Where is his professional pride? A once great player who's content to sit on his arse like that for two seasons loses my respect.

and when he first arrived he had more hair!

whale_oil_beef_hooked Posted on 05/05/2008 08:57
Mendieta - good riddance

You cant really slag him off, he has never ever had a bad word to say about the club or the area....he has also just had a massive house built over at Hutton Rudby so doesnt look as though he is leaving the area just yet.

He may not have played as many games as we would have liked, but like festa he has stayed loyal to the area and unlike merson not said a bad word about the club.

Vosene Posted on 05/05/2008 09:07
Mendieta - good riddance

We slag off players for honoring a contract now, *rolls eyes*

Jonny_Ingbar Posted on 05/05/2008 09:16
Mendieta - good riddance

He hasn't really honoured his contract in the traditional sense though has he?

Football as a profession is almost unique, given the relitively short length of that career.

What Mendy has done wasted the last two years of his career by playing in our stiffs, when he could have played at the top level in Spain (albeit for a smaller club on less money).

To compare his situation to most of ours is pointless, Mendy is a multi millionaire, we aren't.

bigrichardthe3rd Posted on 05/05/2008 09:33

i would of kept him gave him a coaching roll, brought the kids in the reserves on leapes and bounds....

the_throcking_man Posted on 05/05/2008 09:44
Mendieta - good riddance

Boro were daft to give him such a big contract. He was told by the club he would not get a game but was happy to sit in the reserves and collect his money. Nothing wrong with that, we would all do the same. I thought he was an honourable man and would rather play football than sit in the reserves. Bit like Boateng who will leave for first team football and take a pay cut.

Towell Posted on 05/05/2008 09:48

Apparently he's still unreal in training.

Davey_C Posted on 05/05/2008 10:35
Mendieta - good riddance

He was good for us the first season playing with Juninho and Zenden. Like people have said the length of the contract was way to long.

the_throcking_man Posted on 05/05/2008 10:37
Mendieta - good riddance

He was on massive wages at lazio, so probably would not have signed for a shorter contract. I remember reports suggesting we were offering double what some of the spanish teams were prepared to offer him.

AlBoro1984 Posted on 05/05/2008 10:49
Mendieta - good riddance

Mendieta's legs went about 2 years ago, he would not be able to find another club daft enough to pay our wages and I doubt he'd want to demean himself with lower league football. I always find it quite sad when you see once top class players such as Teddy Sherringham struggling in lower divisions.

People always complain when players show no loyalty to the club and leave for other pastures. Well the club has to show loyalty to the players too, you cant just say "ere you've had a bad injury, your under contract, but will ya just pis off"

Loyalty works both ways, in Mendieta's case, he got injured badly, the club sowed loyalty to him, helped him get fit, and they dint make it difficult for him to stay.

If players see us treating our current players right, surely its a plus point to joining the club

"What about Rocky? all he's ever wanted to do since he signed for us is pi55 off back to lisbon."

at least he actually wanted to play football then!!

mendi's attitude has been shocking in my opinion. he has played 10-15 years at the highest level, but still feels the need to milk our club for every last penny of his contract.

if he was the amazing pro which you are all making out, wouldnt he want to go someone and play football for the final years of his career?? even if its on reduced wages??

the biggest mercenary this football club has had.

UCN_BORO Posted on 05/05/2008 13:35
Mendieta - good riddance

Mendieta had a massive hand in two of the best moments of my footballing life (Cardiff & Man U at home). We have had to endure alot of mercenaries over the years at Boro, but very few have brought us the moments that Mendieta has, even though it was only a few. Would our club be in any different position had Mendieta left a couple of years ago? I dont think so.

Personally i love Mendieta and am not overally concerned that he saw out his last few years in the reserves. Still think he at least deserved a squad number this season, but I do not know what his talent is like these days and how "past it" he really is.

Thanks for the memories Mendi!!

PinkPonce Posted on 05/05/2008 13:43

If he plays one more game for the 1st team he gets a million pounds. Hence why he didn't get a squad number.

Well for one your the guy slinging round insults I won't stoop to that level, and for a fact you would not change jobs for a huge pay cut if you say you would your lying or stupid, as for Mendi well he still trained hard and worked hard in the reserves, plus the other players always spoke highly of him, oh and sort your spelling out.

Boromad Posted on 05/05/2008 19:27
Mendieta - good riddance

Sometimes I think people on this board would prefer it if every foreign footballer came and slagged off the area and the club. Mendi can't win. He wasn't the one who offered the contract or the money. In fact his contract was linked heavily to playing appearances and bonuses. Don't believe the figures you see put around on here.

He's never said a bad word about the club, area or fans. His family is settled here and he has youn children. He in fact may not leave and there is talk of him being offered a role in the academy. Good luck to him. He was a great footballer and he had some great games for us including one cup final. The injury finished him off.

Jonny_Ingbar Posted on 05/05/2008 19:35
Mendieta - good riddance

The problem I have is that he was told in no uncertain terms that he had no first team future at the club some time ago, could have left to play regular first team football in Spain, but decided to sit it out in the reserves.

A footballers career is over in the blink of an eye, ten years if you are lucky.

I would have loved to have played football at the level he has and he chose to p*ss the last few years of career away.

BobUpndown Posted on 05/05/2008 19:40

I'd have taken a cut from 60 to 30k a week to play in my final years.. given the chance..

maybe he had other reasons for wanting to stay in the area a while longer.. [;)]

"The problem I have is that he was told in no uncertain terms that he had no first team future at the club some time ago, could have left to play regular first team football in Spain, but decided to sit it out in the reserves."

Why should he have to though? If him and his family are settled here with a regular wage coming in and the determination to fight for a place why should he go? I'm disappointed with Southgate for not even giving him one opportunity given how utterly S*** our midfield has been this season. He could have been the difference between a relegation battle and a respectable top-half finish.

Whale oil - unless my info is wrong he has been offered a position in the academy and doesn't want to move from the area.

And I agree that he should have been given a chance at times this season - his legs may have gone but his football brain hasn't and in the last 15 minutes of games he could have done a job.

Kevin_Bacon_Butties Posted on 05/05/2008 19:51
Mendieta - good riddance

Right so if the club tell him to uproot and bugger off to Spain he should even if he's happy and settled in the area?

br14 Posted on 05/05/2008 20:09
Mendieta - good riddance

Boro signed a long term contract with the bloke on a massive salary. You cant expect him to walk away from that for less than half the money somewhere else - Spain or otherwise.

I guarantee none of you would give up a million pounds for the good of the club.

It's the club that were stupid in telling him he had no place on the team and then not playing him.

If he'd been on the bench and brought on at the end in a few games we'd more than likely have picked up a few more points and he might have attracted more interest in January.

Madness. This club may have a wonderful chairman but we make some pretty juvenile decisions at times.

ravsplumber Posted on 05/05/2008 20:46
Mendieta - good riddance

I agree. It was a poor decision to isolate Mendi and not use him for his creativity. At his worst, he couldn't have been any slower in central midfield than Arca.

Jonny_Ingbar Posted on 05/05/2008 20:50

Its not for the good of the club he should have left, but the good of his career.

You cant expect him to worry about saving the club money FFS, but he only gets one career and hes P****d away the last two years of it.

He had a wonderful Carling Cup final. His pass to Zenden split them wide open.Wasn't it his ball into Job for the Pen too. He was worth the money for that alone
