can't believe people are still wasting money on amazingly limited technology like the ipad, most notebooks just blow them away for a third of the price

A notebook for around 100 will be awful.

You keep saying stuff like this dude but this is another one of those things where you don't have a clue what you are on about.

They aren't limited, I can do pretty much 95% of the things I might use a laptop for:

browse the web
listen to music/radio
check email/facebook/twitter/reddit
watch iplayer/youtube/TED/4OD/downloaded movies
play games
edit photos
check my RSS feeds
update my calendar/todo lists

The other stuff I do is programming but I mainly do that at work so they provide that machine. And if I am going to do development work at home, it won't be on a machine costing 100.

Let's just stop you there. If you are going to start calling something a 'non-truth' then lets take a good look at what I *actually* said:

"I can do pretty much 95% of the things I might use a laptop for"

Matty is right, it's not that important but why did you feel the need to lie about what I said?

Seriously, if you are that bothered about it, why on earth did you make something up to be angry about?

Before you go calling other people stupid and accusing them of constructing realities, I think you need to take a good look at yourself here, especially when pretending people said things and then slagging them off for saying them.

I told my mum to buy an ipad2 instead of a laptop. She loves it. Immediately on when she needs it, charges it once a week, easy to use, doesnt need constant software updates.

Used to often have to mess around with her Windows PC for her, or show her how to use it, help fix problems etc.

I've never looked at her ipad2 and she's had it a year and uses it every day.

Not for everyone of course, but what is? Great bit of kit and the only tablet computer that should be considered.

offside-again Posted on 27/02/2012 20:47

Well one thing you know for sure is apple products are at least 25% over value. Which is good in a way as you get what you pay for and the products are user friendly and of high quality. Just you have to draw the line somewhere on apple products, and an i-mac and ipod touch is now enough for me. [;)]

In fact I almost wish I'd not bothered getting the ipod as it does not get used loads. [:(]

oooooo Posted on 27/02/2012 20:52

Some of their products are more expensive than alternatives but they aren't over-priced. Other companies have tried and failed to make products that compete on price. Almost every tablet I have seen has cost more than an ipad.

Their laptops are more expensive than one you might buy in Tesco but jesus christ, a: those cheap laptops are awful and b: the build quality on Apple gear seems to be brilliant.

I've been trying to fix a laptop my brother asked me to look at. It's about 2 years old. The trackpad and keyboard are a joke plus I don't think they gave any thought to heat dissipation, this thing has about 6 hot spots that can just about burn you if you are not careful. It was built by a company who don't give a XXXXXX.

Well as I say I do like apple products so I'm not hating on them, but most people would say you pay a premium to own anything made by them, I am surprised you don't agree with that vastly common opinion oooooo ?

Mind you the bottom line is simply if you're happy with it and don't feel short changed, then it's no problem I guess. I'm 1 out of 2, insofar as I like them, yet 100% feel the prices are 20-25% too high.

I'm on iPad 1 now, cast off from my daughter who has iPad 2. Laptop obviously does more, but iPad is so convenient. No waiting for it to start up. Need to get up from the chair, just fling it on the settee. Even got a printer, HP photo smart which works perfect with no drivers to install. Got all the tv apps so can watch tv replays. Never look at the gazette again for tv, just go to Radio Times app, loads and loads of stuff I can do while still watching tv, ideal for a lazy XXXXXXtt like me, who wants the best of both worlds on an evening, the TV and Computer

"but most people would say you pay a premium to own anything made by them, I am surprised you don't agree with that vastly common opinion oooooo ?"

I don't think it is a case of the badge being slapped on, along with a hefty 25% mark-up. I agree they are more expensive than other competing products but as I said in my earlier post, even that is not right 100% of the time - new tablets are almost always more expensive? It's not as if everything else is the same but just cheaper.

I just think they are premium products. Apple makes money on them because when it comes to manufacturing, they are miles ahead of their competitors. They invest in facilities years in advance, use the billions they have in the bank to get them running and enjoy exclusive supply arrangements with those factories as a result. It's got to the point where no-one else can make competing products that are as good, let alone 25% cheaper than Apple.

Take the macBook Air, for example. It is 849. That is expensive but it's tiny, it's got an amazing trackpad, it's got a massive battery life, it's silent and it has ssd drives so loads things instantly as well as booting up in about 20 seconds.

It's about double in price of something which doesn't have all of that and I think the premium is that people are willing to pay that extra money to get those unique features. I don't think it's a case of them creating something the same as 700 laptops and them slapping a logo and 25% on top.

Hope that explains what I mean. I don't think they are banking on their name.

The apps you get depend on what you do. I have a magazine which I used to get as paper copy, I now subscribe to get it on line. I can read it and turn pages with one hand, ( no not that sort of magazine) download the kindle app and you have a kindle. BBC I player, ESPN, ITV etc watch tv, Facebook and twitter, although I use twitter bot, much better app, Auto trader and parkers guide for cars. Well I suppose you could have bought the Asus Transformer in the short window before the Asus Transformer Primer came out as long as you don't mind the broken GPS due to poor design. Or you could have bought the Motorola Xoom - though shame if you live in the states and the promised 4g upgrade never appeared. Or one of the two new Motorola 10.1" tablets. Or any number of dodgy 200 models with things like ethernet cables and resistive screens.

Of course your enjoyment of these devices will be tempered by the release of their replacements within 3 months, and the lack of software updates.

Maybe I don't know enough to see beyond that, maybe you do.

Or maybe every single Android tablet (bar perhaps the Fire) has so far failed to offer any reasonable person a suitable alternative to an iPad in terms of value for money, feature set or usability.

They're terrible. There's a reason why iPads utterly dominate the tablet computer market - a market Apple has defined; it's not because the world is brainwashed.

VLC was removed from the App Store though there is at least one alternative that does the same thing but I can't remember what it's called.

Having said that, playing back non-mp4s wont take advantage of hardware decoding, and could have an impact on battery life so re-encoding them is better though time-consuming, with the additional benefit that hey can be synced through iTunes and played back with the video app.

Specky, when you go beyond just managing music with it - ie apps, backups, registering stuff - it an be a bit of a headXXXXXX to say the least. Once you get your head around it, it's not too bad.

"Grateful if someone 'ITK' could explain to me why iTunes is rubbish."

On Windows it is clunky and slow. On either platform it seems to decide at random which apps to keep and which apps to remove from your device during the syncing progress. Syncing itself often seems to go wrong.

Fortunately, for ipads at least, you never have to use it anymore.

I do like Transmission. It served me well on my Mac Mini. Not sure I like the downsides that come with jailbreaking though.

I've not jailbroken any devices. I am tempted, in a geeky having a hack around sort of way but then I remember when I was big on hacking my android phone. I eventually got a bit sick of being the 'administrator'.

If you jailbreak and just add a couple of things, I suspect it'll remain stable. If you go mental nd start changing everything, be prepared to have to fix stuff yourself. I can't be arsed with it!

Back end of last March, I was in New York at the time and the queue at the apple store on 5th avenue was ridiculous!

I've never fancied an iPad because I have an iPod and a decent laptop and didnt really see the need, I got my girlfriend one for Christmas and am never really off it. Come here to check stuff, check my mails during the day, watch a few quick YouTube vids, it's absolutely perfect for it.

I've even got a full touchscreen DJ controller that I was going to pay around 900 for earlier in the year, it has the same functionality yet cost 12!

It's a brilliant piece of kit, I've personally never really used an android or many other tablets, but they almost all try to copy the iPod/iPad devices for a reason, yet they don't seem to work as well for me.

Apart from Djay, some of the better apps I use are Rightmove, Wall of Sound (great app for buying music this one), EBay, Xbox Live and also an app that accesses my NAS Navigator drive that holds all my music in the back bedroom.

strange how people who like apple products are 'fanboys' - yet you have those that harp on chapter and verse about the virtues of 'android', jumping about like an annoying puppy "look at me, look at me im different".

what are they then? fools?

look at phone design now and what it used to be like. apple changed the way phones are thought of and work with the iphone. apple changed computing habits with the ipad.

i only have an iphone and its probably the single best bit of tech ive ever owned.

just installed IOS5 and thats a huge step up - the fine my phone thingy is quality; if you lose it/its stolen you know exactly where it is [:D]

the prblem with Apple fans is that they think everything else is crap, without giving it a chance.

The problem with Android fans is that they think Apple are crap.

I think Apple products look great, but I really don't like IOS, I also don't like how the company operates.

the new Asus and Huwaei tablets look really good, but the big test for Apple is going to be Windows 8 tablets, how iwll they compete when 2 big competitors are ready to attack the market with products and interfaces equal or better(in my case)

oooooo Posted on 29/02/2012 13:08

Are you suggesting I give that sony tablet a 'chance'?

How about I give it about 3 months and see if it is still around.

The following article points out exactly what is wrong with it.

As for windows tablets, they'll be cool but I guarantee they'll cost more than ipads and will have a control-alt-del button. They'll be ok until some app launches an old-style windows GUI.

btw that Sony Tablet has been out for a while, it's Sony's attempt at trying something different, it is also part of their 1st generation of tablets. they have an alternative which is a classic tablet.

trying to compare a folding tablet with a standard tablet is a bit silly. or are you delibratley trying to find the one that suits your argument best? [;)]

There are some really goods product coming to the market and with confirmation of iPad3 in March, this is an exciting time.

I think the big players have all pretty much announced tablets better speced than the iPad2, however iPad3 should get Apple back on par (at least)
from an inerface point of view, if you like IOS, you like IOS and you are unlikely to give any other OS a fair shot; no matter how much you say you will.

For me, Android makes sense, I understand the logic behind the architecture instinctively and I have certain freedoms for personalisation. Windows 8 intrigues me for a business perspective, and the Metro layout is growing on me.

Apple will continue to sell, however the market share will drop, purely based on the amount of quality competition now available.

The article is relevant as they are releasing it on a 2 year contract with at&t in the US next month. $399 **with** a contract. It also serves as pretty good example of dreadful design. You need to read the second link I put up because that sums up so much how these companies DON'T get it.

So what really is the next big upcoming thing?

oooooo Posted on 29/02/2012 13:24

Although your response does reinforce that Android tablets are born to live for a couple of months and then get quietly superceded by the next big thing. This is why no-one develops for them.

mr_maz Posted on 29/02/2012 13:53
finally got round to buying an ipad...

item's being superceded is the nature of the game in the mobile arena, and the tablet arena is no different.

if person A wants a new tablet or new phone, you have an option of going for a slighlty older model which still has good specs or the latest all singing all dancing one, depending on youe budget.

If person B wants to do the same 6 months later, then they also get the option of buying the latest one or one older.

with Apple,

if you follow Apples philiosophy, then unless a new device has come out, you will have to pay the same price until a new model is released.

Personally, If i;m buying something new, I want it to be the best possible, not the only one possible

oooooo Posted on 29/02/2012 13:58
finally got round to buying an ipad...

The problem is, support gets dropped. No point having the 'best' but you don't get any updates as focus shifts to the next new thing. Software is far more important to have updates than hardware and yet there are no android devices being properly supported after a few months, let alone the length of their associated contracts.

mr_maz Posted on 29/02/2012 14:10
finally got round to buying an ipad...

That's a major exageration.

After sales support has improved drastically over the last 6-12 months e.g. all devices capable of supporting ICS are being updated, Sony, LG, HTC, Samsung have all announced their roll outs - But i;ve got to agree in the early days it was bad. (but I expected it to be like that)

Obviously the updates are not as quick or effecient (on the whole) as Apple, but as there is no 3rd party influence with Apple, that makes it a lot easier.

oooooo Posted on 29/02/2012 14:35
finally got round to buying an ipad...

It's not a major exaggeration. It's been around nearly 3 and a half years and has been the same with every single device. A handful of companies promising to upgrade their current models means nothing when they pull support for them later in the year.

Show me a device that was supported with upgrades for 18 months or 2 years - the length of most contracts.

It's a massive problem and the main reason why developers aren't investing in the ecosystem.

mr_maz Posted on 29/02/2012 14:42
finally got round to buying an ipad...

Why is it a problem is something 18 months old is not upgraded? your contract is up? get a new one? I have the original HTC Desire which was released with Eclair it had 2 updates before the software superceded the capabilities of the handset. Sounds fair enough to me.

my car isn't updated when a new model is released?

Also I'm pretty sure that there are plenty of Developers on the Android ecosystem, and with the wider roll out of ICS this will be further improved as there is now one source code compatable with both formats.

I seem to remember that there are number of great new features on IOS5 that are not compatable with iphone 3g? you;ve just got to accept that hardware and software move at a different pace

oooooo Posted on 29/02/2012 14:51
finally got round to buying an ipad...

The 3g is not supported on ios5 but it's almost 4 years old. It does have support for 4.3 which most developers still support in their app builds.

Why do I want upgrades? Because the app developers can't support the vast number of different devices, OS versions and custom rolled vendor versions. The only hope you have is to upgrade your OS but if you can't, you simply aren't going to be able to run a lot of the apps available today. Plus, some apps you own could end up dropping support for your os version a matter of months after buying the handset.

The android phone I bought? Had one update after 3 months of me buying it. 21 months of no updates! By the end, virtually no new apps of merit were compatible.

mr_maz Posted on 29/02/2012 14:57
finally got round to buying an ipad...

which Android did you get?

As I say they were awful right upto Gingerbread really. Froyo was the first time that millions of users collectivley(sp) demanded software support. Gingerbread was a lot better, and ICS has been very good. the main reason for the delays ofcourse are that manufactures customise android for their brands so usually a longer wait from release to devise.

anyway bud, got to go interview someone. catch you later

100Rod100 Posted on 01/03/2012 00:48

im not an apple 'fanboy' but lets have a look at things.

apple bring out the iphone - revolutionises the way we use our phone and its capabilities.

apple bring out the ipad - revolutionises the way millions now interact with a 'computer'. so much so that any other manufacturer wants to jump on the bandwagon and make them. why? becuase they are taking the market away form PCs etc.

regardless of what you think of them, apple really should be applauded not heckled.

the moot point of the capability of an ipad is neither here nor there - it will do practically everything a laptop will do, yet is easier to use, has a longer battery and is more 'portable' - so why do people get upset and shout ooh look at this android blah blah blah.

its all a bit precious.

I'm sure they are very useful but would you recommend one for people who have serious nose picking habits?

mr_maz Posted on 01/03/2012 09:09
finally got round to buying an ipad...

well as your comparing Android against Apple - you need to remember that Apple have their own device - so the only true comparison is iPhone Vs Google Nexus.

secondly, many of the Android phones listed were low to middle end and therefore siginficantly cheaper (most were free at tarrifs where the iPhone was 200+) to purchase and significantly lower tarriff. So if people want a cheap handset they shouldn't expect the same level of aftersales updates as premium handsets like Apple.

and thirdly as mentioned, many of the devices no longer supported do not have the hardware capability for the new software, so there was no update for them.

Data is easy to manipulate, and you can hardly say the source is not biased.
