I know its the norm these days, but it was very unusual to see tattoos on women in those days, and they weren't pretty tattoo's either. They were stuff like anchors and "Cut Here" around their necks etc.

Nothing happened until I walked outside and I was punched in the back of the head and given the worst kicking I have ever had. A couple of lads must have come out and they intervened. They shoved me in a taxi and told the driver to take me to the hospital - one was one of the Teesdales according to the taxi driver.

The rough pubs on Teesside don't exist anymore, they've all been knocked down. The Commercial and The Teessider in Thornaby were probably two of the roughest. The Brambles Farm was pretty rough, in a dingy sort of shythouse way .. The Captain Cook used to be full of dockies and river workers, that place could get quite serious at times.

The Brown Jug in Eston is a ruff pub. I am born and raised a Eston lad but have only been in the Jug half a dozen times.

This summer my uncle, his son and daughter and her little one were visiting from down south. The took a walk into Eston from my mothers house. Was a sunny day and popped for a quick drink. In the Brown Jug.

Laughed my head off when they told me. Apparently the little one was given some pocket money. Everyone was really friendly with them. So guess it aint to bad.

Last time I was in the Brambles Farm was back in the nineties. It wasn't long after we'd moved to the Riverside and I'm sure it was New Years day and we were playing Villa on a late kick-off. Walked in about 3 o'clock and I'm sure the locals had been there all night and hadn't gone home. An old woman was curled up fast asleep on one of the benches with her scruffy dog asleep next to her. She only woke up when the cheese and pickles came round.

The Aggy (it's local name) in Billingham isn't so bad. Or at least never use to be. It depends on what your idea of rough is though. It was a bit run down, the blokes toilets stank, but the pints were good and majority of people down to earth (if a little rough round the edges).

To be fair, I'd much prefer that than standing in a boozer with pop star/TV celebrity wannabes and blokes in the toilet giving you a spray of lynx after you've had a p*ss.

I grew up in Eston 87-97 but have never heard of The Eston Royal, where was that / what is it now?

Never once been in the Brown Jug as an adult like, don't know why but as a kid I always heard there was trouble there with the Hoe's etc

"I grew up in Eston 87-97 but have never heard of The Eston Royal, where was that / what is it now?"

It became Oscars (directly opposite the Miners Arms) when the old royal and the shop next to it were knocked into one. No idea what it is now as moved out of the locale!

It was a great boozer when it was the small place, but was reckoned a hell-hole by reputation, probably exaggerated by people who didn't go in the place. Mind when it kicked off in Eston it seemed to spark trouble for the rest of the night throughout the length of the media coined 'mad mile'.

The Blues Club - not strictly a pub, but an after hours drinking den behind Psyche. selling drugs and red stripe from a cupboard and couples phuqin over the radiators whilst their dog watched.

Brown Jug at Norton/Tilery is a deffo! Also, The Commercial just down there next to Hills factory could be very intimidating as well, luckily – I knew most of the locals, so I got away with it!
Also, The Grand opposite the Boro railway station (as well as the Bass pub – can’t remember it’s name now at the bottom of the same street at the traffic lights) Both were notorious, particularly on a match day.
Me and a mate got into a massive ruck with 4 lesbians at what used to be Pharoahs niteclub at the top of Stockton High Street, - ruff as.
And a bit from left field here, but if anyone remembers a place on Marton Road opposite the exchange. Just before they condemned the whole road, someone opened a (supposed) nite club called Masters, in what was like an almost derelict building next to the old Jordison Printers building.
I went twice, after the first time I swore I’d never go back, even though I was mortal, I nearly papped meself at the clip of most of the people in there.
Me mates convinced me to go again, well late on one night when our ‘takeaway flogons’ of John Smiths from the Linnie had run out. I was relieved to get down there and we discovered that the whole road had finally been demolished!!!
Of course – just around the corner – the Bongo – goes without saying, and if you ever went down Guisborough on a weekend night, the Black Swan on the High Street, was usually like summat off Dodge City!
All in all though – HAPPY DAYS!

Dunno how any pubs in Norton are getting a mention, even the brown jug i've been in a few times and seen no trouble. I'm not remotely hard or look hard either. Norton village full of fannys.

One for your dads or grandads - The Baltic Tavern, Commercial Street.
It shut in the early 60s and made its near neighbour The Robin Hood seem like the Ritz

I went into a pub years ago with `the boys` ( I think i was 18 or 19 but looked about 10) anyway we`d gone in to see my mates Grandad to give him some money to into Boro that night. whilst in there there was a bloke having a laugh with us & he stubbed his fag out on the floor & went to the bar......there was an empty ashtray on the F*%king table!!!!!!.......I think that was the Eagle......I think Charles Bronson (the prisoner) would be intimidated in that place....[rle]

The Standard is pretty rough in Redcar like - once went to the Races and got absolutely battered, went in there and went on the karaoke ..... surprised I made it out

The pubs in Redcar aren't that bad to be honest, The Stockton (was Bookmaker) and Elgins are probably the worst on the high street

!'borobadge [:D] the acklam was mental'

i'll say it was, a bloke once asked me if it was ok to smash a bottle over me head !!!

and when the travellers had a young bewer up the duff and they were getting the shotguns out for the wedding, the search for the culprit was scaryier than scary....

i had a v.nice 'relationship' with a land-ladys sister from the acklam, and in the late 50s early 60s me Nana drank in there, mind you she drank everywhere in t'boro [:D][^]

will never forget the night we went to swansea for the fa cup game from there...

Was in the Captain Cook about 15 years back with a few mates. The then landlady/barmaid was stood at the bar with a few other women when the door burst open and one of the "girls" staggered in, her tights were ripped, she had gravel rash on her legs, arms and some scrapes on her face.

The women all ran to her and started to cuddle and comfort her, we were quite close so could here the craic[smi]She explained she had been picked up by a punter in his motor and not long after they pulled away they had a disagreement resulting in the bloke some how throwing her out of the moving car.

It was all cooing and sympathy, then the landlady says "did you get paid up front", "no" said the girl. "How many fecking times have i told you to get the money first you stupid cow" she screamed.

We went to the Bongo later and feck me they were all there, minus the landlady and the girl was on the dance floor, ripped tights, gravel rash the lot[smi]

Another vote for the Steampacket.

'Do you want a drink?' (handed can of tepid Carlsberg).

Just to chuck another name in, the pub /club variously known as Penny Lane in Billog, above the Queensway car park that was ceremoniously decapitated a few years back was a bit fruity as well. Especially when Kingsway House was where you wnet for your giro.

Can U just point out that there has only been 2 fights in the newcastle house in the last 2 weeks. The scenario is usually thus; A fat woman calls another fat woman fat, mayhem ensues, then we calm down as somebody puts Leonard Cohen on the jukebox.
ps. The Old Vic could feel pretty menacing at times, but i don't remember it kicking off in there.

Was that not Eleanor Rigby's? Then later JD's, then K2.

That was a hive of fighting, drug taking and stuff. In was closed down for that in the end. A lad was killed in a fight outside there in 1996.

Went under various names Nero, Penny Lane is the one I remember.

I do remember the lad getting killed because I worked Saturday mornings in Queensway House at the time. Drove up the ramp, stopped at the top, and the coppers made me walk all the way round the car park to avoid contaminating the crime scene.

I remember when the Bruntons had sam smiths for 49p a pint and a big banner in the window saying so.
Does that make it a tough pub?
My dad sometimes goes on about The Glue Pot being a rough pub back in the day, goodness knows where that was in the Boro.
