Buying a Boat...

Looking into buying a motor boat for leisure, the up front purchase cost is clear to see but what other fees / costs are involved with owning, mooring, running a boat? Are they a big drain on the finances or can they happily sit there at low cost until you feel like using them?

I don't fancy a helipad, I'll build up slowly. Just a nice comfortable boat really. My grandad used to own a speedboat and some dinghies and they were brilliant as a kid but my relatives nicked them when he died. It would be nice to keep boating in the family...

On a serious note; You're boasting now about buying a boat, 6 months before your child is even born, to incorporate it into the lifestyle ...

It's likely going to be 4 years minimum before the child can even swim adequately enough to consider taking it in any water aside from a bath or a swimming pool ... To consider taking him / her in a boat is ludicrous ...

But obviously you knew that before you posted didn't you - you're definitely losing it [:D]

Angelmatty Posted on 02/08/2011 11:04
Buying a Boat...

you only need a licence to fish of the boat if you intend to sell the fish.

if your keeping and eating then no you dont
and then it also depends on the size of the fish
you cannot just fish for anything because the law states under a certain size you have to throw it back in.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 02/08/2011 11:06
Buying a Boat...

Angelmatty Posted on 02/08/2011 11:08
Buying a Boat...

yeah to be honest when i got all the prices together was a none starter
would have meant making cut backs in other places like cars and can see from earlier posts you like them also.
but all depends on how much disposable income you have.

think the old saying with boats is

day you buy 1 is the best day of your life
the 2nd best day is the day you sell it

Lisbonlegend Posted on 02/08/2011 11:09
Buying a Boat...

If mooring is different prices for different places, how do you pay for it, say if you had 200 days in Twickenham and 165 days in Hartlepool?

Angelmatty Posted on 02/08/2011 11:12
Buying a Boat...

mooring is different for each place depending on location.
a place like say hartlepool marina could be expensive just like say mooring in yarm
but somewhere like the tees near stockton could be cheaper

Lisbonlegend Posted on 02/08/2011 11:14
Buying a Boat...

I've never been overly fussed with cars but then I'd never had a half decent one until recently, always saw them as a drain on my resources. It has been better and more economical though with the long journeys North. I have a reasonable amount of disposable income, if I can put that towards something different and interesting to improve my quality of life then I'll do it. If I'm only going to use it for 10 minutes and it's going to cost me a fortune then it's pointless.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 02/08/2011 11:15

If it has wings, tits or floats, rent it.[^]

I have a mate who had a boat ... 43ft Fairline Targa which was moored in Portals Nous, Mallorca. Was great for weekends away ... a floating caravan. Costs were high though ... 13k per year to moor it, all repairs were under warranty as it was brand new (250k) but it was 700 ish to fill with diesel.

Another mate of mine rented an 80ft SS Predator in Ibiza last month ... just for a long weekend, with skipper and booze (prob 2k's worth), it was 40k ...[:O]

As a rough guide annual costs (insurance/running/servicing/berths/fuel etc) for a boat are 10% of the boats value.

In nearly all cases in the long run it's cheaper to charter than to buy. But you'd have to pass the Day Skipper which you might struggle with.

Inspired by your thread LL I decided to put boats on my painting. Made from 2 ply kitchen roll - not sure they will float but you can always use them to mop something up. One for you and the missus and one for the wee one.
so new they are still wet and need LL on the sails [rle]

Buying a Boat...

Lisbon,

I have a boat, 35ft double-ender, timber-built, twin screw Perkins diesels. There's nothing better than plodding about on the water but being a boatowner is not a cheap business; someone told me it was like owning a second car and he was right - like owning a bloody vintage Bentley the money it costs!

A small, GRP boat like the one you put up a picture of will be a bit cheaper but they are all a real commitment in terms of cost.

High revving engines don't half drink fuel.

BEFORE you buy the boat (I stress before so that you are not tempted to do without once you get the boat) buy the following:

Lifejackets - sufficient numbers for everyone on the boat and always make everyone wear them when you are on the water.

Flares

Marine VHF radio - never rely on mobile phones, they often don't work offshore, the batteries quickly go flat and phones have a nasty habit of being dropped over the side. In addition if you ever need help, coastguards and lifeboats can get a fix on a VHF radio which they can't with a mobile phone.

Fire extinguishers - at least two.

Anchor and cable

Tow rope

Spare propeller if you are using an outboard, plus the tools needed to fit it if you lose a prop at sea - usually a simple spanner, a split pin and long-nosed pliers.

Charts - and get to know the waters where you'll be going.

Full insurance.

Ideally if you are using the boat at sea rather than a river you should also get GPS and an echo sounder.

You need to make sure that the boat and all its equipment are fully checked over at least once a year and definitely get your lifejackets serviced annually and replace all your flares annually.

Also have a word with the coastguard and Redcar or Hartlepool Lifeboat - they'll be delighted you consulted with them.

Hope you enjoy it, there's nothing better.

Stick to a river rather than the sea and it's a hell of a lot cheaper [^]

Foggys, surely most of that comes as standard?

'fraid not necessarily, mate!

Even compasses from boats disappear - they are highly nickable.

In all honesty go out in someone else's and get a feel for it and see if you like it. Depends what you want to do with the boat, if you want to go fishing at sea get something a bit bigger with all the equipment I mention above.

Don't take any chances at sea because if you break down and drift further out and you have no means of communicating with shore you are really in trouble.

For a river something smaller will suffice and you don't need the radio and flares, the GPS or the echo sounder.

But sea, river or lake always put on that lifejacket.

Great advice, I might rent one for a bit then or see if my uncle still has his. Would you recommend any sites for renting a boat?

Thats a long list Foggy but he could make it cheaper , the fire extinguisher and the tow rop can come from his cars . He could take Pink Ponce with him on the trip....ohhh sorry my mistake it says Anchor.

Cost of boat + cost of RYA Powerboat Level 2 qualification (minimum!) + cost of VHF license and course + cost of Diesel engine maintenance course + cost of chart-work/seamanship course + cost of moorings + cost of higher level maintenance (above and beyond what you can do) + cost of general running costs of new ropes etc etc + cost of sea safety course + cost of insurance + cost of MCA certification + cost of RYA membership + cost of RNLI (offshore) membership = bloody expensive, but you will live and be legal.

OR

Cost of boat and nothing else = You will die and the MCA investigation will be long and drawn out and will come to the conclusion that you were an unpreparedXXXXXX
