I was at a wedding. That said, even if I wasn't, I'm not sure I'd have been there. I considered paying to play, which I might do next year given the chance, but I wasn't really that excited about just coming to watch.

I did donate though.

I agree Marlon as a general rule but I actually think these games are decent to watch because it's a one off for those playing, not some fat celebs or not bothered footballers.

Pauluka Posted on 25/05/2011 10:38
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Marlon, you're spot on. It was more a 'look at me' game rather than a charity game.

ItalianJob Posted on 25/05/2011 10:38
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Of course I'd consider it next time, I considered it this time but had too much on.

Strange thing donating to charity. If someone in the street had asked me to give £20 (in a bucket type collection) for the Parky type charity I would have said 'no chance'. Because of the match event I didn't really hesitate about going, it's amazing how these events change the way we part with our hard earned cash.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 25/05/2011 10:41
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

MarlonD Posted on 25/05/2011 10:41

You think it was decent to watch but I can guarantee you the standard would have been sunday morning top league at best and i don't look out of my back window at Sandy Flatts on a sunday morning to watch a load of footballers with the touch of a rapist, so why would i come down to watch you lot ?

MarlonD Posted on 25/05/2011 10:49

Lisbon, I don't begrudge paying the £10 for the Parky match but I walked out 10 mins into the 2nd half as i was bored sh1tless.

I don't even know who organised the Parky game. Must be a very modest bloke

Lisbonlegend Posted on 25/05/2011 10:51
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

And that's why I'm asking Daz. Is it because there was a person attached to it, rather than a charity that benefits all. Did he turn up because Tony Mowbray asked him to or because he believed in the spirit of 86 or because he felt Parky and his family needed the money?

Pauluka Posted on 25/05/2011 10:53
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Lisbon, maybe because the Parky game was about Parky, where the Robson game was about the organiser. Just a thought....

MarlonD Posted on 25/05/2011 10:54
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Daz, tbh cancer has unfortunately touched my immediate family in the last few months with devastating effect.

Marlon, I'm just trying to understand why you would happily pay £10 for what you described as a crap match yet you wouldn't pay £2 to come to the Sir Bobby game. Is there any point in me trying to get people to come and watch or just be happy that those that did turn up came and bought into it.

MarlonD Posted on 25/05/2011 11:07
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Which of the above points do you not understand.

The team of '86 is my favourite Boro team ever. It felt like I grew up with them and they were of a similar age to me. Parky's plight tugged on my sentimental heartstrings. I'm not ashamed of that and as I stated above I have been supporting a cancer charity, not the SBR one but still a worthy cause in my eyes.

its getting to the point on this board that if you go for a sh1te you set up a charity and ask for donations.

I'd echo and elaborate on what Gravyboat said further up about it ultimately being just a low-standard kick about for a load of lads who I don't know but whose names I see on here regularly acting like c o c k s .

Good luck with it though - not saying there's anything bad about being a prat on a message board or indeed posting attention seeking $hite constantly...I'm just not interested in getting involved in reality with these characters.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 25/05/2011 11:22
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

There's no charity hard sell, it would be great if you wanted to come along and if I could provide a product that would interest you and help make more money. However, if you simply don't want to come then I don't give a toss as the event went on anyway, everyone there had a great time and there was a decent amount raised. I fully understand that there are people on this board like Vasily who try and be clever and are jealous but for those who are more normal, it would be interesting to understand why they didn't come along.

cmj08 Posted on 25/05/2011 11:23

Marlon it's easy to knock people who step up to the plate and make something happen. Just saying. As for the football I'd say it was much better than Sunday standard . I've played Saturday and Sunday level so I can judge. ask anyone who attended

It is a product though and I tried to treat it as a business case. What would make people part with £225, what would make people want to turn up and watch and how could I Market it. Celebrity and media exposure bring in the crowds, parky and tfm had these, we only had some ex Boro players and a stadium which were devalued in spectator terms by the other charity matches.

When it comes to raising money for important charities, it should be a case of 'by hook or by crook'.

If the lads involved get some publicity or plenty of pats on the back then so be it, they deserve it for getting off their arse and trying to do something positive.

Most people in society now don't particularly care about others, so it's good to see normal working class lads bucking the trend.

Hats off to all involved![^]

P.S - Although if you're still banging on about it by the start of next season it may detract from the event! [:P]

I will speak up for Lisbon. I honestly dont know how anybody else would have gone about business in the way he has done to get this event organised, not once, not twice but three times and now he is talking about doing it again. I think he is genuinely excited at the prospect of raising cash for a very worthwile cause. Without knowing him from here and meeting him in public many a time there is no way on earth I would have had the opportunity to play at the Riverisde in what felt like a very competitive game played at a high standard, which is so far removed from Marlons "sunday morning kickabout" analogy.

I have no reason to bite, the games over, the money has been raised and people who take part appeared to enjoy it. I'm disappointed there wasn't a bigger crowd and that Mendi, Hendrie and Windass let me down, a few learning points there.

I dont expect anyone to hand over money because I would like them too, I would want people to because they felt compelled. Marlon felt compelled to go to Parky but not Sir Bobby, could I ever persuade Marlon to come along. I'd like to think so but he's a stubborn get.

Lisbon - on a serious note, I think if the collection was for an individual then people would have more inclination to attend.

Otherwise, unless you know someone who is playing why would you go?

The other alternative is to increase the number of people involved, either by playing 100 kids against the first team or having a mini-tournament.

Increasing the number of people would potentially raise more money but would completely change the event. On a selfish note, I want to play in the game and for it to be a decent game. I'm trying to stay loyal to the roots of the charity match.

Marlon, you typify a floating FMTTM the type of which I was hoping to attract to the match but it didn't happen and you weren't interested. I need to find a formula that makes you and people like you want to come along and support the event.

I can only speak from my perspective but if its going to Bobby Robson foundation, I assume its going to a (geordie) charity and it will dissapear into a big pot.

If, using the example from the other day, that little kid needs 20K to save his life, then that is a target which if hit will deliver tangible outcome.

LL - How about getting a couple of star managers too? Mowbray and Venus?

And the thingy we used to do at half time with the lad starting from the half way line and dribbling it up against the keeper. Could get a load of the floaters(great description) to do this at half time. Might make them attend?

That's something I've spoken to Liz about in the past, seeing where the money is going to. I think it's important that people see the effect the money raised has, otherwise what's the point. I think saving that little kids life is v important and the board has the power to do something positive towards that, it was a pleasure to have him and his family at the charity match.

Maybe there'll be less going on next year so you'll be able to get some animated managers in the dug outs.

Out of interest, did the club charge you for the pitch?

They had other charity games and they can't give them all for free, especially in the current climate and the Club were supporting the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation golf day at Rockliffe this year rather than the football match.

From my point of view i had friends up for the weekend, but to echo what someone said above if you have no connection with anyone playing i don't think there's really any reason for going.

I was tempted when Mendieta was booked and if TLF turned up to play i think i'd bid a fair whack myself and risk injury [:D] As i've said before good on you mate keep on chugging away [^]

Lisbon - final observation and dont take this the wrong way mate but I did get sick of hearing about the match this time around - every second post on here, every third entry on facebook.

Sometimes its quality rather than quantity what counts.

Recently moved to Leeds for a new job and didn't finish in time to get back with it being the Friday night.

I do like the Boro v A.N.Other Teams fans (relevant team i.e. Newcastle or Sunderland, not Boro fans v Bury fans) and would be more inclined to go and watch that.If you got the other team/fans involved you could even get a bigger crowd. [^]

In my experience, people who constantly ram charity giving opportunities down your throat are either geniunely extrememly passionate about a certain charity due to a personal loss OR they see it as a great way to try and get everyone to think they're a great guy when really they are hiding something - like a dog in a fridge or something like that

If I'd have been back in the UK, I doubt I'd have gone. In fact I'd have been at the Westgarth for whatever band Blaggamuffin had on.

It's a great night for those playing and their families but I'm with Marlon on the entertainment value for spectators. I don't bother with pre-season friendlies for the same reason.

Well done with it though.

I take my hat off to you to you for all your hard work and effort and the effort shown by those who played/watched/contributed as I am sure it will effect some people’s lives in a positive way.

I personally would rather go to the boozer and stick a £10 in the charity box on the bar as I have no interest in watching former over weight players struggle for 30 mins around a football pitch.

It wasn’t attract to some people.

LL

Having read through this thread I must say you do come across as resentful to Gary Parkinson and the media/public interest that the match in his name generated.
I hope that's not the case as normally you post as a decent lad.

Personally, I don't live in UK anymore but it would have had to be an actual Boro match to keep me out of the pub on a Friday night.

Also, I think I would be only inclined to attend at another time if I was actually playing or a family member/close friend was. The game does have an air of "only clique need apply" about it.

Why would I be resentful towards Gary Parkinson? I feel gutted for him and his family, a local lad struck down by a horrendous illness. This is the reason I spent£160 on tickets for family and friends to attend the dinner and £700 on an auction prize. I would have been at his charity match had I not had to manage the MSS team. However, from an event management and fundraising side, I will happily admit that I was frustrated by the timing of the Parky match.

Starbuck Posted on 25/05/2011 18:27

Well your frustration is coming across a little bit distorted to me LL. You've done a great job organising the game and raising a load of cash. Well done fella. Be satisfied. Charity organising shouldn't be a competition but its starting to sound like it

BoroPhil Posted on 25/05/2011 18:38

I like the mini-competition idea, ultimately I think the only way you are going to get people to watch this is if people they know are involved. The more people that play, the people will come and watch.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 25/05/2011 19:42
FAO Those that Didn't Go to the Charity Game on Friday...

Well my frustration isnt distorted, it was simply that I put a lot of effort into making something special for people and to raise a lot of money and the Parky match scuppered a lot of my plans because it was less than a week before. It was certainly nothing personal, simply that there was some crossover between the games which took some of the uniqueness out of what I was doing. I am competitive by nature and I viewed the match as a project with a business plan. It was like Buying a cornershop only to find out Tesco was opening next door. It wasn't just the Parky match, it was the TFM game aswell, like people alluded to earlier, charity overload.

A lot of bitterness and ill wishes flying around for some reason, usually from the type of folk that you wouldn't want to have a beer with, the type of folk that think of nobody but themselves, the type of blokes that think taking the XXXXXX out of someone and doing it with no style, no charm or cheekiness and no subtlety is the height of humour. You know who you are. pathetic really, the wind up is very boring now.

So what if Andy got a lot out of it personally, so what if he got some limelight, so what? At least he actually did something, something close to his heart, put some passion into something and helped a very good cause along the way, a cause that might just end up helping you or someone you know.

As far as I'm concerned, I saw the look of pride in his mother's face when I was talking to her about him and his charity game, about the effort he'd put in, and that in itself was worthy of him doing it.

So some of you don't like the way he did it, or don't like the charity, whatever, he did it his way. If he'd have taken a leaf out of the majority on this thread and did it their way, nothing would have happened, a lot of folk wouldn't have had a good night, some lads wouldn't have had a game of football and over £10k wouldn't have been raised for charity.

i'm the first to call Andy a dozy, soppy over reactionary doyle, but really, this is a good thing he has done, no-matter how you look at it. It's a lot better than getting other people to pay for you to go and climb kilimanjaro or work with orphans in Africa or some other wonderful experience.

The lad has put in hundreds of hours for this and the good feeling surrounding it is widespread.

If you aren't interested in the FMTTM Charity match, go and read something else, ffs.

Well done Lisbon. [^]

A long way to go about it but it made a few other people happy along the way aswell and maybe went a little way towards maybe helping a few unfortunate cancer sufferers aswell so although it wasn't Juninho on the pitch with 35,000 there as I imagined, ill still look back on it as being a good nightl
