The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

The more this government settles in, the more common sense policies they come out with. It seems the long term dole wallahs who are unable to convince job centre staff that they are making an effort to find work, are going to be forced to work for their community instead.

Looks like the days of a life on benefits as a lifestyle choice are coming to an end. [^]

The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

Whilst I have no problem with the principal of those wrongly claiming benefits for a prolonged period, working for them (and despite some peoples protests, having worked in welfare to work I know that there are many)

The worrying area for me is that Job Centre staff will be relied upon to make judgements.

Go into any "Job Centre" and you will see that the staff have no time to make assessments of any kind or indeed even to give advice on employment for those that are interested.

People turn up, told to sign and then to go away as soon as possible. Don't ask any questions, advice etc. Just check the electronic job screens and use the phones if you wish.

I'm not blaming the staff individually but the culture is awful in these places.

The word "Job Centre" is as appropriate to those places as the word Discotheque is appropriate to my underpants.

if they cant find work they will be forced to work for free??

arent they taking the jobs off the likes of street cleaners?

Would you like them to wear yellow stars as well Bernie?
Cheap labour rules OK eh

aloc Posted on 14/03/2011 07:49
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

Mundane general street cleaning will suffice. Pick any street in Cleveland and there'll be tab ends on the floor for them to pick up so no, they'll not put the street cleaners out of work, there's probably only a handful of them and they can't do it all. Also, regarding job centre staff having to make the judgements it wouldn't need to be like that. They can turn up at a depot, do the register like at school, be given a black bin bag and told to come back in 8 hours when the contents of their hard day at work can be examined!!!

aloc Posted on 14/03/2011 07:50
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

Yeah they can wear yellow wellies too[^]

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 14/03/2011 07:52
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

if it wouldnt put street cleaners out of work because the streets would still be unclean doesnt that suggest that another street cleaner job or more should be made available rather than using free labour?

Emmersons_BrazillianDong Posted on 14/03/2011 07:58
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

So You have now decided that this scheme is for for all of those on benefits and not those who are judged to be refusing to work, Aloc?

Notice the word judged? Who makes that judgement because the job centre staff are useless.

It will be interesting to see how this will work. Forcing people into work and policing the scheme is fanciful in my opinion.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 14/03/2011 08:02
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

they threatened to cut my benefits the job centre because i went for an interview instead of signing on when i was unemployed.

That has to be a worry that they would consider signing on more important than going for an interview for a job.

Maggie tried to do the same thing..it didnt work then and wont work now.....kinell its like being in a time warp.

Not clear how this differs from the sanctions regime inherent in Flexible New Deal under the last Government or from the Work for Your Benefit scheme.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 14/03/2011 08:33

didnt new deal involve finding you training to help meet your needs?

The_same_as_before Posted on 14/03/2011 08:34
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

are the 10,000 coppers who are getting sacked part of this workshy? or the 250,000 local and civil workers?

the conflicts of being a Tory; sack everyone who does not work in the private sector and then reduce their benefits because they are work shy, don't give aid to foriegn countries because they have their own rich, but don't tax the rich here at 50%, make sure the banks are at no risk whatsoever, I love the consistency of it all.

chitsa Posted on 14/03/2011 08:34
The Workshy To Be Forced To Clean The Streets

Another non-story Tory wheeze. Who will inform these people? Who will force them to do such work? Who will inform them they have to do it? At the sharp end some young stressed employee will have to read their rights to them?

As usual some dogma ridden Minister like IDS tells us what will happen then sits back and leaves some poor apparatchik to face the wasters.

Will this happen? I think not.

Raz - yes it did, as will the Work Programme. Basically this is a vast rebranding of the last Government's welfare reforms - they've even got Freud working for them FFS. The only people who will see any change will be the contractors supplying the new stationery.

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 14/03/2011 09:05

do you have to refuse work for 12months then?

but, if they refuse to clean or do whatever is deemed necessary, then benefits will be cut, so not really in there interest...

concern i have is who will monitor/control this and how will it be managed - assume with additional resource!

Razmond_HWDR Posted on 14/03/2011 09:41

they'll be classed as criminals and working alongside people serving community service orders.

Hurworth Posted on 14/03/2011 09:45

So assume that I won't work and am told to sweep the streets, but I then refuse.

I then get my benefits cut, or stopped, so how do I feed, house and clothe my wife and kids.

It won't work will it because nobody will let my kids starve, or will they?

"who are unable to convince job centre staff that they are making an effort to find work"

Its not hard mate. All they make you do is fill in a jobs log. Say you've contacted 3 employers a week and your ok. Its just typical Tory lip service to get the likes of Bernie frothing at the mouth. The only people who this will hit will be the most vulnerable who don't know how to work the system.

no doubt the nazis...i mean the tories will be looking for the long term unemployed amongst the deaf and the blind to be wandering the roads and streets with a long-handled brush.....

If this happens then will I be out of a job?

Government Official - "Oi, Dustbin_Man, you ain't got a job no more cos them lazy unemployed XXXXXXs are doing it instead!"

Dustbin_Man - "Okay, I will sleep in and then sit on my settee watching Jeremy Kyle, Oprah and TVAM, smoking tabs with a hand down the front of me pants"

Government Official - "No you wont! If you cant find another job and contribute then we will make you work for us, sweeping the streets....."

Dustbin_Man - "Nice one, thats what I wanna do anyway!"

Government Official - "....for your dole money"

What a swindle, doesn't seem fair! lol

Tell me when the Tories have been in control that this hasn't been the case.

Things will get worse for us all except millionaires and those who know how to avoid/evade paying the taxes that the rest of us pay willingly (well pay).

No jobs to employ road sweepers/clenaers but if the Tory tw*ts can get it done for nowt there are suddenly loads of roads to clean.
