FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Providing I get the Official thumbs up for the Stadium tomorrow then it's all systems go. No idea why Im doing it again but let's get on with it anyway. I've spoken to 5 former Boro heroes who have expressed an interest in playing in the game. I tried my hardest to get Juninho but he's already been offered a few thousand pounds, flights and accommodation to play in 2 other charity matches and said no. I thought about upping the stakes but somehow I don't think the money would motivate him.

I'll hopefully provide details on the format sooner rather than later for those interested in playing in the game...

Lisbon, Jan is correct I will help in any way that I can, so just let me know. I think that you may have my email address from previous.

The secret is let's get it planned and implemented early doors, and you should divest more of the responsibility to others. You did far too much on your own last year when there were many offers of help and knackered yourself in the process.

This year's event could be even bigger and better than last, and that's a bold statement as last year's effort was amazing.

Let's get started.[^][:D]

Bare in mind that the more professionals you get (who play for free) the less place there is for people willing to donate the £200.00.

The format from last year doesn't need to change. You need 2 professionals, 1 for either team, and someone else involved in picking teams to ensure that Lisbon doesn't end up with all his ringers again [:D]

the more ex pros you get the better. I understand your point ponce but the more ex/pros the more interest = more money. they dont need to play as long as last year and maybe feature more as rolling subs.

for example 4 ex pros
2 per side
rotate after 22.5mins so play 45mins in total

only a suggestion mind

If we can book a place for our game we will be paying the same as all the other charities which is only fair.

The club has been hugely supportive of the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation and is helping with another fund-raising activity too which will be announced shortly.

Basically we don't want to take the mick when the club's done so much already and other charities have to pay to play.

LL's aware of that and isn't asking for any special treatment.

Given the enthusiasm shown for this game I have no doubts we'll raise a lot of money for this local cause anyway. [^][^]

Just contacted the 6th ex Boro player which will make it 3 on each side if he's up for it. So if we play 2 squads of 16 thats 26 places up for grabs in the match. £225 per place = £5850 minus £3000 pitch = £2850 for the charity to kick us off.

It will be 2 x 45 minute halves
There will be a penalty shoot out if the scores are level at the end
The teams will wear this seasons Boro home and away kits
There'll be an auction for the captains armbands.
It will be rolling subs.
There'll be 2 managers places available

Just to gauge interest levels, pop your name down here...I can't start collecting money until I get a slot from the club.

Just contacted the 6th ex Boro player which will make it 3 on each side if he's up for it. So if we play 2 squads of 16 thats 26 places up for grabs in the match. £225 per place = £5850 minus £3000 pitch = £2850 for the charity to kick us off.

The teams will wear this seasons Boro home and away kits
There'll be an auction for the captains armbands.
It will be 2 x 45 minute halves
There will be a penalty shoot out if the scores are level at the end
It will be rolling subs.
There'll be 2 managers places available

Why don't they let you play on the pitch for free? Or discount the fee and give the difference to charity.

Saying that, what else do you expect from a club that charges kids to be ball boys?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 00:26
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Why should they do anything for us? Why should you expect things to be put on a plate?

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:32
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Would it not be for the charity and not "us"? Or does it not work like that? Obviously it doesn't, like. Otherwise the club would discount it and donate the rest, you know, to be nice and that.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 00:33
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

So why should this charity be more deserving than another charity?

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:39
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

How many charity matches get played at the Riverside during pre-season? It can't be that many - about 3 or 4, maybe? It wouldn't hurt the club to give the charities a bit back, would it?

I just think it would be a nice gesture, that's all. Obviously Steve "One Of Us" Gibson doesn't feel that way, which is strange considering he's climbing a f*cking mountain for charity.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 00:40
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

The week or so that the pitch is available is rented out to businesses in order to generate revenue to go towards the running of the club. By giving the pitch free they would lose that revenue. The club has laid of a lot of staff so it's a bit of an insult to those people to then throw away vital money which the business needs. The club do a lot of work for the community but at the end of the day they are a business and have to be run that way.

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:41
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

And while I'm at it, what are the ex-Boro players contributing towards this? Are they paying £225?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 00:43
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

That statement about Steve Gibson is ridiculous considering what he did for us last year, what he continues to do for the Charity on top of his mountain climb. I actually wonder about you sometimes, I don't see you climbing mountains to raise money to help terminally I'll people.

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:45
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Oh well, maybe I'm just a romantic then when it comes to giving a bit back, especially when it comes to a football club.

Overall, it won't be costing them much to give you a discount, especially when you consider how much a pint of crap lager is in there - about £3 if I remember rightly.

Anyway, I thought Steve "One Of Us" Gibson backed this charity? What better way to back it than give absolutely nothing to it?

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:48
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

I've got to go to work, walk the dog, cook the tea, do a bit of washing up, some hoovering - the terminally ill folk will have to wait for a donation, because climbing mountains is out of the question, I have better things to do.

So, how much are the rich, famous, ex-footballers paying? Do you see them paying their £225 to "help terminally ill people"? Or is it just the normal, everyday folk who are doing it?

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 00:53
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

You're doing a great job of talking yourself out of a game.

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 00:56
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

I wasn't planning on playing - I had a stinker last year.

I'm just trying to make some suggestions, that's all. And I'm questioning whether it's right that rich people, like footballers, get to play without donating when other people have to pay a lot of money for the privilege.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 16/02/2011 01:00
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Normal people pay because they want to play at the Riverside alongside ex Boro players. ex footballers give up their time to help boost the profile of the event and raise more money. I'm a bit surprised you couldn't work that out.

Steve Gibson supported our event last year and is supporting another event this year. How you construe that as giving nothing to the charity either means you are on a very droll wind up or you are incredibly dim.

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 01:05
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

It still doesn't make it right that they're not paying their way, though. Yes, they raise the profile of the match and the event in general, but this is the age austerity, isn't it? I'd certainly begrudge paying £225 to play when others are playing for free because of who they are - or were.

In what way is he supporting it? By letting you play on "his" pitch? He's charging £3,000 for that, when really - if he was properly supporting it - he should at least give you a discount and put the difference towards the charity. It won't make any difference to his or the club's bank balance.

I'm not being funny Lisbon, but don't you think that the places should be allocated to others who took part in the last 2 years or at the very least post on here before they get offered to mates of mates and things like that?

There's already half a dozen people on that list in front of people like Shep, Hewie, TeessiderSeasider, Gurthy, Greavsie etc and only currently 2 spaces left.

You can't increase places any more than already because people will only get half an hours playing time otherwise, when last year everyone was guaranteed 70 minutes.

I think it's completely unfair if some people who've been involved for 2 years don't get chance to play because they didn't see the thread immediately or because the space got took by someones friends etc.

Just my opinion, happy to hear yours or anyone elses.

True, but more will turn up to see ex-player legends and take more cash on-the-door than will turn up to see 22 unknown fat lads run around wheezing, red faced and close to collapse.[ref]

john_parrott Posted on 16/02/2011 12:23
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

It's not specifically about him, though. I know you and many other worship him, so I won't slag him off because it'll only upset you.

The main thing that's wrong is letting ex-pros (who were probably crap anyway) play for nothing. If it's about charity, they should either pay or if not, their 6 places go to people who are willing to pay.

That is of course if it is ALL ABOUT THE CHARITY, which it apparently is.

09_dave_09 Posted on 16/02/2011 12:24
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

But them 6 players might bring in the 1000 people who came and watched last year as opposed to the 30 who came to conyers the year before. If on average they spend 4 quid a head drinks and stuff then it makes sense.

You think more will turn up and make up for a £1350 loss? I think LL best put the entrance fee up, because you won't get anywhere near 1350 people there.

I'll bet you the £1350 myself on the matter, in fact.

Maybe they will - they'd have to be have been great players, mind. As much as I like LL, he's not capable of getting somebody like Ravanelli or Juninho back for 1 match - he doesn't have the financial backing.

I'm just saying that if it's all about the charity, then make them give a donation. It's only fair - everybody else is doing it.

Im sure the players who played last year will have made a donation and Im sure the ones who play this year will to. Just because we dont know what they put in. There appearence is there donation.

J_P, Lisbon's strategy for getting the paying public into the Riverside is much more sound than yours in my humble opinion.

I just hope that Lisbon sticks to his tried and tested process for organising this charity day and doesn't allow it degenerate into decisions by committee.

No wonder Lisbon gets píssed off having to deal with all the flack he gets from no marques who deliberately want to scupper the event, even before a date has been set.

"Im sure the players who played last year will have made a donation and Im sure the ones who play this year will to. Just because we dont know what they put in. There appearence is there donation"

I played last year and paid £200. Playing with Mark Proctor and Paul Kerr meant absolutely nothing to me. Neither did the charity, to be honest. I played because I wanted to.

If you think the ex-pro's donation is his appearance, then you tell that the terminally ill people that LL mentions earlier in the thread when he tried to beat me with them. Will an ex-pro help cure cancer? No.

I did value your opinion till this post. You dont seem to see that people came to watch the two pros play from last year. They paid to watch and their gate reciepts will have valued more than 400 quid. I dont think if we all gave 2000 quid cancer would be cured grow up. If your bitter towards footballers or the club just say so. Where did you play last year position I mean forgot who you are?

there was knocking on for 1000 last year wasn't there? i'm sure, perhaps with some event advertising, etc. we can exceed those numbers for this year

i was one of the 30 or so you mention who turned up to watch at conyers a couple of years ago and didn't think it would grow to what is already has [^]

i wonder how Brendon Foster would view this? i dont think the 1st GNR he organised was on quite the same scale as last years [?]

Sea_Harrier, I know Lisbon in real life (not through this messageboard, I should add) and he's a top bloke. He wouldn't be doing this otherwise and he wouldn't have done the others.

I'm not deliberately trying to scupper anything. As I said, I played last year and aside from a poor performance, enjoyed my day. But that had nothing to do with playing alongside knackered ex-pros. I'm just saying that I don't think it's right that they aren't required to put a bit in.

Maybe they'll donate some money after - if they do, fair play to them.

The entrance fee has increased from £200 to £225 this year so thats an additional £550 in the charity kitty.

The ex pro's are essential to raising the profile of the event, because without it, you'll have a group of blokes playing football. With their input, the event goes out to a far wider audience, it gets more publicity, and more people will turn up to watch.

I genuinely don't understand why you take such a view on things so you have to appear as being so controversial.

We had over 1,000 people turning up last year, and I reckon with a couple more pros we can easily get 2,00 people attending this time around.

Also, a lot of us last year got additional sponsorship over and above the £200 entrance fee - The input of people like Hignett will be great for us, because the website will go out to a wider audience via things like twitter, so people can donate.

But it's not about being controversial. If I remember rightly, I said exactly the same last year too. If people are happy to pay £225, that's up to them, isn't it?

All I'm saying is that I don't think it's right that the ex-pros don't HAVE to donate anything other than their time. Maybe they will donate some money, I don't know. I just think they should do as a gesture.

How many people turn up is going to depend solely on the standard of ex pro's that have agreed to play.
It was a good laugh at conyers, but there was only like 50 odd people there to witness Skeelo's "monk" like performance in goal!
You saw the profile of the event last year, with over a thousand spectators. Hopefully LL's efforts will be rewarded again this year and we can double the attendance.
I will also help in any way possible Lisbon.

Hoof for Lisbon - not that all places have gone and not even half of last years players have had a chance to get there names down [V]

'I'm not being funny Lisbon, but don't you think that the places should be allocated to others who took part in the last 2 years or at the very least post on here before they get offered to mates of mates and things like that?

There's already half a dozen people on that list in front of people like Shep, Hewie, TeessiderSeasider, Gurthy, Greavsie etc and only currently 2 spaces left.

You can't increase places any more than already because people will only get half an hours playing time otherwise, when last year everyone was guaranteed 70 minutes.

I think it's completely unfair if some people who've been involved for 2 years don't get chance to play because they didn't see the thread immediately or because the space got took by someones friends etc.

Just my opinion, happy to hear yours or anyone elses'

john_parrot,

I apologise if I have misinterpreted your intentions but Lisbon took a lot of unnecessary stick last year for what was a very enjoyable day at the Riverside and raised an awful lot of money for a very good cause. I want this event to go ahead and don't want Lisbon to walk away due to unnecessary comments.

Similarly, The Ponce took a lot of criticism when he arranged free tickets for underprivileged fans, who were suffering hardship, when Mowbray was appointed as manager. He did a great job and it made me proud on behalf of those living on Teesside as to how we look after our fellow supporters in uncertain times.

May I suggest that you get involved with the event and afford the organisers a positive attitude. Remember that the end product will make a difference to those who are currently suffering from this heinous disease.[^]

PP,

I agree with what your saying, i dont post very often as im usually beaten to the punchline of any jokes and to be honest i dont think that highly of my opinions

however im always the voyeur!

i didnt play last year due to work commitments but did play at conyers. If decided by a greater mind that my place is more deserved to to someone else then i will accept that and still spectate.

jannizart Posted on 16/02/2011 13:49
Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Why does there have to be so many arguments? Last year worked well. Celebrities are needed to attract more people. Whether they donate or not isn't anything to do with us.
What needs to be worked on this year is....... if everyone who came last time invited a friend then we would double our crowd. If more people print off the poster this year and put it in their local shop or on their noticeboards then that is a good way to get the event noticed. If anyone knows someone at the Herald and Post then a well designed leaflet could end up in every house that they deliver to.
Can we have more positive suggestions please and if you want to be negative then set up a negative thread that we can ignore.
Let's just all work together to raise money for a very worthy cause.
Lisbon, can I volunteer to do the poster campaign this year subject to you approving the design of course?

Jumpers, I know who you are and I remember you from the Conyers game ... My point wasn't necessarily directed at you, as you have been involved and you post on here, but I think it's unfair on people who have been involved to now not have a chance because all the spaces have been taken and there's 6 or so names on there who we don't know ...

It's just my opinion.

Ponce, if you read the post I was trying to gauge the interest levels, that list doesn't put some people ahead of others. I'm not going to choose who plays either as that isn't fair on me as I'd be the one upsetting people. I planned to do it on those that pay first, if that doesn't work out it'll be a lottery type draw.

At the end of the Conyers game I made a promise that those that played will get first refusal. this year it's open to all with no favouritism, for me it has to be that way otherwise it'll become an exclusive club which isn't fair on those that would like to get involved.

With regards ex Boro players, they raise the whole profile of the event and the purpose of this is to try and make it even better than last year for those involved. I will respect the Boro players privacy and not divulge anything they wish to donate. If it wasn't about the stadium and the Boro players we'd still be playing at Conyers and raising £2,500 instead of £13,000 we raised last year.

Ponce,

I agree with what your saying. Similar to JFG i dont post very often but do come on here several times every workday just to keep up to date on Boro and all other things of interest that this board throws up.

I did play last year, but not at Conyers and i think it worked last year by everyone who played Conyers given first dibs to play again and if they couldnt then it got opened up to all. I was lucky today as saw the link first thing and put my name forward before a meeting. If I hadn't of seen it though would have been COMPLETELY gutted.

Obviously is a tricky one for Andy also as he clearly wants to fill the positions and concentrate on making the day as good, if not better, than the success he created last year.

There'll be 6 ex Boro players playing
There'll be an auction for the captains armbands.
It will be 2 x 45 minute halves
There will be a penalty shoot out if the scores are level at the end
It will be rolling subs.
There'll be 2 managers places available

Just to gauge interest levels, pop your name down here...I can't start collecting money until I get a slot from the club.

Sea_Harrier:

I know he took a lot of stick last year - I read it all at the time and didn't agree with most of it. Last year's match was good, I really enjoyed it. The thing is, there was only 2 ex-pros last year - this year there could be 6. That means that some people aren't going to get a chance to play, plus the end donation could end up being less than it could be.

I didn't agree with Ponce's ticket idea. It was a nice thought, don't get me wrong, but people should have more class than to come begging on a messageboard for tickets to the match.

I'm not getting involved. I don't want to. I played last year and donated my money - that's that.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 17/02/2011 08:32
FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Not really. It was said tongue in cheek at the comment that this match should be a warm up for the Parky match. It's two different charities so it simply wouldn't work either way and was a bit of a thoughtless comment really if you dig deeper. One is a players match to raise money for a former player, this a supporters match to raise money to help cancer sufferers in the area. They are separate entities, and should be kept as such.

Lisbonlegend Posted on 22/02/2011 00:38

Not really as Mr Gibson is supporting three other charity matches at great cost plus another event for the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation. You should be thankful that you had the opportunity to play on the Riverside at the same time as your dad refereed, courtesy of Mr Gibson. You should probably lick his shoes clean to be honest.[^]

john_parrott Posted on 22/02/2011 00:41
FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

Ridiculous. If he's the patron of the charity, he shouldn't be charging you to play. If you don't agree, fair enough. I just think it's wrong.

john_parrott Posted on 22/02/2011 00:43

I am happy with the club and their reasoning, make hay whilst the sun shines. Last year was brilliant, life goes on and it just means that a little bit more effort is needed. Maybe instead of criticising Gibson you could could use your energies to go collecting round peoples houses.[^]

'Why is the charity website not attracting more funds?'

Because we can't pay the funds into the justgiving page at the moment, as the pitch needs to be paid for. Lisbon will transfer the excess from our donations in there once the pitch fees are sorted. If we all paid into the justgiving page then he can't withdraw the money ...

Once all the places have been taken, we'll all start spreading the link and attracting direct donations into the charity [^]

I've been away for a couple of days so just catching up with this thread now.

When I saw all the enthusiasm for this game I thought about Sir Bobby and how he would have felt about it and (honestly!) I got all misty eyed.

He would have been so proud to know a group of Boro fans were doing this to raise money for him at the Riverside.

Thanks Andy and thanks to all of you who are contributing.

Colin Cooper is the 2nd ex Boro player to kindly confirm his involvement in the FMTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match.[^]

Colin Terence Cooper (born 28 February 1967 in Durham, England) is a former English footballer, who spent most of his career at Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest.

He played as a centre back, but was equally useful at full-back. He spent the first seven years of his professional career contracted to Middlesbrough, making 188 league appearances and scoring six league goals in the process. During this time, he helped Middlesbrough through liquidation in 1986.

In the summer of 1991, he was transferred to Division Two side (renamed Division One and then the Football League Championship) Millwall for the sum of £300,000 spending two successful seasons at The Den.
After impressing several big name clubs, he decided to move to Nottingham Forest in 1993 for £1,700,000. It was at Forest where Colin arguably played the best football of his career. His form even earned him two England caps in 1995.

After experiencing the joys of two promotions and the heart-break of a relegation, "Super Coops" was re-purchased by his first club, Middlesbrough, in a £2,500,000 deal. Many people questioned the signing of the stalwart from Nottingham Forest, but Colin proved to many people that he was more than capable of playing Premier League football. He maintained a consistent level of play throughout the seven years that he spent with Middlesbrough, and could always be relied upon to do a job. He almost gave up the game in 2002 after his son, Finlay, died in an accident at the family home just hours after their victory over Manchester United in the FA Cup. In 2003-04, he spent some time on loan with Sunderland.

In 2005, Colin was awarded a one-year contract extension, which saw him play at the age of 39. His final season with Middlesbrough, 2005–06, saw Boro reach the 2006 UEFA Cup Final. However he made just one appearance all campaign, coming on as a late substitute on the last day of the season against Fulham.

Paul Kerr, the man who sent Boro to Wembley in 1990 is the third Boro player to kindly agree to play in the FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match on Friday 20th May at 8pm.[^]

Paul Andrew Kerr (born 9 June 1964 in Portsmouth, England) is a former English footballer. He was a midfield player who managed to score almost 50 goals in a little over 260 games

Kerr scored a goal in the 1990 Zenith Systems Data Cup semi-final against his former team Aston Villa, which helped Middlesbrough reach Wembley for the first time in the club's history.

He signed for Port Vale from Millwall for a £140,000 fee in July 1992. He became a regular in the side as the club won the TNT Tournament and the Autoglass Trophy in 1993, as well as the side that won promotion to the Second Division in 1992–93. However he fell out of favour and was released in 1993.

Having acted as a financial advisor to the Professional Footballers Association, he founded Paul Kerr Associates in 2002, a company offering financial advice to professional footballers.

times. Sadly, 17 years after his first diagnosis, he lost that long
and courageous battle on 31 July 2009. He died very peacefully at his
County Durham home with his wife and family beside him. During the
last 18 months of his life, and after retiring from football
management, Sir Bobby worked hard towards a new goal - fighting cancer
through his charity. The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation focuses on
the early detection and treatment of cancer and the clinical trials of
new drugs that will eventually beat it....and Boro fans are uniting
with Sir Bobby in the fight against this horrible disease.

The first game, in May 2009, was of humble origins, a few effervescent
Boro fans having a kickabout in the blazing sunshine at Conyers school
in Yarm, watched by 60 or so people but the outcome of £2,500 raised
was no mean feat. As we all sat outside the pub after the match
enjoying a few beers and recalling the incidents in the 4-4 draw, I
half jokingly said we'd repeat the game but at the Riverside Stadium
next year. Little did I know that a year later we'd all be lining up
alongside ex Boro heroes Mark Proctor and Paul Kerr watched by almost
1,000 hardy souls whilst chants of 'There's only One Bobby Robson"
rang out around the ground from Boros fanatical 'Red Faction'. It was
a simply magical day that all those that were there would testify to.
The magic continued afterwards in the bar of the Riverside Lounge as
Hayley McQueen presented the raffle and Janice Foley work in managing
an online art auction brought the final total to a brilliant £13,000
raised. The day was made even better knowing that a total of over
£15,000 had been raised by generous Boro fans from the two games in
order to help fight a long standing battle against cancer in the
region. The linesman on the day had lost his wife to cancer, the
grandmother of the two mascots on the day had recently been diagnosed
with cancer so the whole day meant a little bit more to everyone than
just a football match.

This year, the match will again be held at the Riverside Stadium and
everyone involved will be pushing hard to make it even more of a
success than the previous two games, if that is possible. The measure
of the success of the 2010 match was evident when six ex Boro stars,
including Marlon Beresford, Colin Cooper, Craig Hignett and Paul Kerr
jumped at the chance to play in the match and help boost it's profile.
A great gesture which was equalled by the demand of the Boro fans to
play in the match, despite the identity of the participating ex Boro
stars unknown, it sold out in only 5 minutes at £225 per place!!! The
Red Faction and Twe12thman fan groups have both grasped the chance to
support the event and will be there in full voice to support the day
to make it another special occassion. There will be a halftime
penalty competition for kids and ball boy spots available for
donations of £10 and £5 respectively with free Boro hats for the kids
taking part. Roary the Lion will hopefully be in attendance to spur
on the fans both on and off the pitch and a commemorative FMTTM
fanzine will be produced on the day. Oh and with it being Friday
night, the bar will be open aswell! There will also be an online art
auction run by Janice Foley of Yarm Originals ( www.yarmoriginals.com
) to keep an eye on and probably a raffle if I can get hold of a few
raffle items.

The first target is to try and raise enough money to break £20,000
over the 3 matches and it will be a 'Magnificent' effort by all
concerned if it becomes a reality. The overall goal is to have a
brilliant night at the Riverside with 35,000 fans in the stadium, a
few ex Boro legends being nutmegged by a few overweight supporters, a
bit of a party and to raise as much money as possible to aid the
battle against cancer in the North East. Please, please help us
acheive our goals in any way you possibly can. Up the Boro!

The legend that is John Hendrie has agreed to play alongside Craig Hignett, Colin Cooper, Paul Kerr and Marlon Beresford in this years charity match at the Riverside Stadium on Friday May 20th at 8pm!

John Grattan Hendrie (born 24 October 1963 in Lennoxtown, East Dunbartonshire) is a Scottish former professionalassociation footballer who played on the right wing or in attack.

His career started at Coventry City but he moved to Bradford City, where he played 173 consecutive league games, winning one promotion and narrowly missing out on another. Following spells with Newcastle United and Leeds United, he moved to Middlesbrough and scored the final goal at Ayresome Park among his 44 goals for Boro. When he was replaced by Brazilian Juninho he moved to Barnsley where he finished his career and also served as manager.

His uncle is another Scottish former pro footballer, Paul Hendrie. Paul has two sons (John's cousins) in the game; Lee Hendrie made a late substitute appearance for England in 1998 and Stuart Hendrie plays for Morecambe.

He played as a deep-lying striker for Middlesbrough and helped them win promotion to the newly-founded FA Premier League in 1992, and was their leading scorer in 1995 when they won promotion back to the top flight. He secured legendary status on Teesside by scoring the last ever goal at Ayresome Park.

FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Charity Match 2011...

It's been a while since my last email so thought I'd update you all on progress.

Parking: West Stand Riverside car park.

Entrance: Players and match officials will be via the West Stand players entrance. Supporters will also enter via the West Stand but the exit doors and it will be £2 for adults and £1 for kids and there'll be someone on the gate with buckets collecting.

Disclaimer: Anyone using the pitch on the day will need a pair of football boots and will need to sign a disclaimer. I'll need names of all those involved in the match and the half time kids penalties so I can issue tunnel passes for the day.

Players: You may or you may not have heard but the six ex Boro players playing in the game are former Spanish International Gaizka Mendieta, the first ever Riverside scorer Craig Hignett, the last ever Ayresome Park scorer John Hendrie, Ex Boro stalwart and ex Boro assistant manager Colin Cooper, the man who fired us to our first ever Wembley Cup final in the Zenith Data Systems Cup Paul Kerr and penalty king extraordinaire and Boro Supporters South keeper Marlon Beresford. There's only one remaining place for the match after one of the lads had to pull out through injury so if anyone knows anyone that wants to play let me know.

Captains: Captains on the day will be myself and PinkPonce aka Mark Appleton after an online auction on FMTTM which raised £100 for the charity.

Pre Match - Players to arrive at 7pm, we'll all be in the home changing room as the away changing room is crap. Players will need to sign a disclaimer on entry and have their boots checked. The match kicks off at 8pm so we'll have an hour to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the facilities and have a bit of a warm up.

Kit - I've sorted out the Home and Away Boro kits for use on the day which will need to be looked after and returned at the end of the game as they are the property of Middlesbrough Supporters South Football Team.

Roary the Lion - Roary the Lion should be here this year entertaining the crowds before kick off.

Scoreboards and Tannoy - The scoreboards are available this year and we should have the tannoy available aswell so hopefully we'll have some runout music.

Floodlights - Hopefully they'll be switched on

The Match - The match will be 2 x 45 minute halves with a ten minute break for half time and penalties if the scores are level at the end. I'll announce the teams a couple of weeks before the game. Those last to pay will start the game on the bench as per last years rules. All players will be guaranteed 60 minutes minimum.

Don't forget your towels and soap, the showers were pretty cold last year though so we may all have to jump in the bath together.

Fanzine - There'll be a commemorative Fly Me to the Moon Fanzine available for purchase on the day.

Food and Drink - There'll be beer, soft drinks and snacks available to buy in the ground on the day of the match. Unlike normal matchday at the Riverside, you will be allowed to consume alcohol in the stand, just don't start pelting the officials, or the players for the matter, with bottles!

TV Cameras - The match will be recorded by Boro TV and DVD's available to purchase, price information will be available soon.

Photographer - There'll be a few photographers there on the day capturing the event, these photos will be available to purchase after the match.

Fundraising and Sponsor forms: The charity matches so far have raised in excess of £20,000 so far which is a brilliant acheivement and thanks to everyone that has been involved, donated and supported the event. The charity are currently sorting out sponsor forms for the event which I will distribute as soon as received.

After Match Party: In recent discussions with the club they have kindly agreed to let us use the 220 capacity Riverside Lounge after the match and it will be open until 00:45. I'll sort some food out for everyone as I did last year but I'll need to know numbers and take a payment for food, probably in the region of £10 per person and I'll put your name on the guest list. Let me know asap if you want tickets for this and names of people attending.

Auction: Janice Foley of Yarm originals has started an art auction to raise money for the site so get yourselves on there and have a look, there'll be more stuff to come. http://www.yarmoriginals.com/guestartists.php?s=45f00a5e83677197f714b526e893cbdb&artistname=Sir+Bobby+Robson+Charity+Auction

There's also a signed Boro ball for auction and a few Sir Bobby Robson items.

Media: Radio - The match was mentioned on BBC Radio Tees yesterday (9 minutes in) by George Caulkin of the Times newspaper. http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fiplayer%2Fepisode%2Fp00f9tfz%2FAli_Brownlee_17_03_2011%2F&h=5cba7

Newspaper - The match will be featured in the Evening Gazette at some point soon and has already been mentioned on FMTTM and a couple of other Boro sites ( http://www.comeonmfc.co.uk/forum/ ).

I'm sure there's probably a few other things that I've forgotten but I'm off to bed now.

I know you’ve been missing me so thought I’d drop another email in….

FMTTM Sir Bobby Robson Charity Match 2011
Venue: Riverside Stadium
Date: Friday May 20th 2011
Time: Doors open 7pm, Kick off 8pm
Star Players: Gaizka Mendieta, Craig Hignett, Marlon Beresford, Paul Kerr, Colin Cooper, Bernie Slaven, John Hendrie, TBA.

http://www.justgiving.com/fmttmbobbyrobsoncharitymatch2011

Further developments to the match….

Sponsor forms
Forms received from the charity and have been attached so you can get out there in to your work places and batter people in a nice way. However, I’d much prefer it if you got people to donate directly via the justgiving link for clarity on what has been raised or once you have collected donate it all on there yourselves and stick your names next to it. Remember, this is the key to the success of the match and at the moment we’re way down on last year’s total.

http://www.justgiving.com/fmttmbobbyrobsoncharitymatch2011

IMPORTANT: After Match Party!!!!
We have the Riverside Lounge for after the match and it will be £8 per person and this will include entrance and food on the night. The bar will be open until 00:45 and hopefully a few of the Boro Stars will be stopping back for a bit of scran and a few drinks. There’ll probably be a raffle and auction results will be announced on the night plus a man of the match presentation.

I’ll need the following information for the after match function in the legends lounge by March 31st at the latest please:

Number of people attending: (Including yourselves)
Names of those attending (for guest list) : (including yourselves)?
Type of food required: Hot Chicken Bun & Chips / Pizza & chips / Pie & Peas
Payment: I will advise of payment as soon as information is received. This is the most painful part as it tends to waste the biggest part of my team so if you can please pay as promptly as possible citing your name as the reference.

Star Player Addition
Ex Boro goalscoring legend Bernie ‘The Wolfman’ Slaven has agreed to play in the match. Bernie scored 147 goals in 382 career games for Boro and was capped 7 times by the republic of Ireland. If anyone is concerned by reducing pitch minutes due to the addition of another Boro hero then I can gladly reimburse you your money, just give me a shout. ;-) In all seriousness, Bernie is suggesting his fitness levels aren’t 100% so will no doubt rotate quite happily like the rest of us. I plan to get one more ex Boro player to even things up and then that will be the last.

Media
Newspapers - There will be a 500 word charity match preview of the game in this weekends Sunday Sun so make sure you tell everyone to go out and buy it.
Radio – Bernie will be mentioning it on the Legends show on Real Radio

Corporate Sponsors
Wood Recyclers Association, Fowles Concrete, Francis Flower, Green Recycling, Wood Recycling Services, HW Martin, Minsterport and Rudrum Holdings.

Balloons
Sugarcraft have kindly donated some balloons for the after match party, check out their link for all your wedding and party needs @ www.abc-sugarcraft.com

Ballboys
A £5 donation on the just giving site will secure a place as a bellboy for anyone that wants their kids to take part. The kids will be instructed in the away dressing room just before half time and will need boots and to sign a disclaimer.

http://www.justgiving.com/fmttmbobbyrobsoncharitymatch2011

Kids Penalty Shootout
There are 10 kids spots for the penalty shootout at half time. For those that have expressed an interest, please donate your £10 online to secure your kids place and put your kids name next to the donation. The kids will be instructed in the away dressing room just before half time and will need boots and to sign a disclaimer. Kids taking penalties can also be ball boys if they wish. Once the shootout has finished it’s ok to have a kick about on the pitch until the players return for the second half.

http://www.justgiving.com/fmttmbobbyrobsoncharitymatch2011

Boro Fans Penalty Shootout
In addition to the kids penalty shoot out I hope to have a half time shoot out between the two Boro fan groups, Red Faction and Twe12thMan with Marlon Beresford in goal. I’ll need names of those taking part, a £10 donation from each player on the justgiving site, they will need to bring their boots and sign a disclaimer. Once the shootout has finished it’s ok to have a kick about on the pitch until the players return for the second half.

http://www.justgiving.com/fmttmbobbyrobsoncharitymatch2011

Volunteers
If anyone knows of any volunteers to help with the following on the day then please shout up: Collecting entrance fees, managing the kids half time penalty competition, managing the ‘adults’ half time penalty competition, selling fanzines….

Previously on SBRF Charity Match News….

Parking
West Stand Riverside car park - Free.

Players and match officials: Will be via the West Stand players entrance at 7pm prompt. This will allow boots to be checked and disclaimers to be signed.

Anyone using the pitch on the day will need a pair of football boots and will need to sign a disclaimer. I'll need names of all those involved in the match and the half time kids penalties so I can issue tunnel passes for the day.

Football Boots
Anyone wanting to enter the field of play for any reason including penalties will need to be wearing football boots as well as signing a disclaimer, so don’t forget them!!!

Pre Match
Players to arrive at 7pm, Players will need to sign a disclaimer on entry and have their boots checked We'll all be in the home changing room as the away changing room is crap. . The match kicks off at 8pm so we'll have an hour to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the facilities and have a bit of a warm up. There will be Gatorade kindly provided for players by BRITVIC SOFT DRINKS before the match to make sure everyone is thoroughly hydrated.

Boro Kits
I've sorted out the Home and Away Boro kits for use on the day. Each kit will be allocated via shirt number to each player and will need to be returned at the end of the game as they are the property of Middlesbrough Supporters South Football Team.

Roary the Lion
Roary the Lion should be here this year entertaining the crowds before kick off.

Hopefully they'll be switched on

The Match
The match will be 2 x 45 minute halves with a ten minute break for half time and penalties if the scores are level at the end. I'll announce the teams a couple of weeks before the game. Those last to pay will start the game on the bench as per last years rules. All players will be guaranteed 60 minutes minimum.

Teams
The teams will be announced a week (or two) before the big day.

Fanzine
There'll be a commemorative Fly Me to the Moon Fanzine available for purchase on the day.

Food and Drink
There'll be beer, soft drinks and snacks available to buy in the ground on the day of the match. Unlike normal matchday at the Riverside, you will be allowed to consume alcohol in the stand, just don't start pelting the officials, or the players for the matter, with bottles!

TV Cameras
All gone dark on this front at the moment with BoroTV and Your Coverage not replying to emails / calls / texts but rest assured I’ll get something sorted!!

Photographer
Keith Adams from Keith Adams Photography has kindly agreed to capture the day, these photos will be available to purchase after the match.

Fundraising and Sponsor forms
The charity matches so far have raised in excess of £20,000 so far which is a brilliant achievement and thanks to everyone that has been involved, donated and supported the event. I've been a bit disappointed with the general fundraising levels so far to be honest as other than player donations for the match the majority of the £6,000 raised so far has come from my corporate contacts. Can people please try and step it up and badger people, in a nice way obviously, to donate and help us reach the £10,000 target. No excuse now that the sponsor forms are here!!!

Charity Match Posters
These need sorting ASAP so will make it a priority to get something done.

After Match Party
In recent discussions with the club they have kindly agreed to let us use the 220 capacity Riverside Lounge after the match and it will be open until 00:45. I'll sort some food out for everyone as I did last year but I'll need to know numbers and take a payment for food, probably in the region of £10 per person and I'll put your name on the guest list. Let me know asap if you want tickets for this and names of people attending.

Raffle / Auction
Janice Foley of Yarm originals has started an art auction to raise money for the site so get yourselves on there and have a look, there'll be more stuff to come. http://www.yarmoriginals.com/guestartists.php?s=45f00a5e83677197f714b526e893cbdb&artistname=Sir+Bobby+Robson+Charity+Auction

There's also a signed Boro ball for auction and a few Sir Bobby Robson items.

The 15th is the date the online auction finishes Lisbon.

That's a shame but good luck with the matches and be careful you don't get injured or you may miss the big match [smi]
