Dont quite understand this league split thing. Is it like North v South then? Why loyalty to one set of teams?

12_Afonso Posted on 06/02/2011 18:28
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

No North/South, its split into NFC and AFC, each conference has a north, south, east and west division.

enigma17 Posted on 06/02/2011 18:29
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

There's two conferences, AFC and NFC. 16 teams in each, split into 4 groups of 4. You play home and away against each of your group teams plus another 10 from teams from other groups (from both conferences).

Superbowl is winner of the AFC v NFC winner.

I'm backing the NFC winner because Redskins are an NFC team.

CardiffDaffs Posted on 06/02/2011 18:30
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

How is it split then? Who decides who goes into which Conference?

enigma17 Posted on 06/02/2011 18:31
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

The history of it is that there were two separate organisations, AFL and NFL. They merged into the NFL as we know it today in 1970 but always kept separate conferences to ensure rivalries weren't lost.

I also assume that this is the first time BBC has shown it live - it must therefore get a record UK TV audience. Its come a long way from Nicky Horne the Capital Radio DJ who fronted NFL Channel 4 in the 80s

Dont say that hmb. Rodgers' last outing in a dome, we dominated the NFC 1st seed, on their patch..Also, Pittsburgh are playing a free agent at centre as their first choice is out, against BJ!

Ive been a Green Bay fan for as long as I can remember American Football, this is my first time watching them in the Superbowl. Im nervous haha. [:D]

Edit to say, we can also play some D.

enigma17 Posted on 06/02/2011 18:52
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Legursky will be under the spotlight tonight. Pouncey has been in the league one season and already he's one of the best centers. Might end up being the difference, couple of misses blocks/botched snaps.

12_Afonso Posted on 06/02/2011 18:57
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Definitely, unless Legursky steps up and does something incredibly special in his position, I can only see it being detrimental to Pittsburgh.

On a side note, my one game Ive been to at Lambeau was against the Redskins...Charles Woodson returned an interception for a TD [:D]

to quote Michael vick - I don't have a dog in the fight but am really looking fwd to it too.

Not going to root for the Steelers because of Rapelesberger, but am cool on the pack because I'm a Falcon.

That said, if you lose to the champs it's one thing and if Rodgers performs like that again (doubtful in his career imo) then it's Green Bay's.

For me, if Rodgers doesn't have a serious injury in his career, we'll be talking about him amongst the very best of all time.

He's in my top 5 in the league currently. Along with Brady, Manning, Rivers and Brees.

heaton_mersey_boro Posted on 06/02/2011 19:10
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

May be a simplistic way of looking at it, but if Rogers performs and Polamalu has a quiet game (if thats possible?), and if the Packers keep Harrison and Farrior in check - its theirs for the taking [smi]

12_Afonso Posted on 06/02/2011 19:13
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

I would agree enigma, was just about to post about him staying injury free. His pocket presence in the Atlanta game was frightening.

If we stick receivers on the field (Our 4WR packages, etc), I think Pittsburgh may struggle.

enigma17 Posted on 06/02/2011 19:14
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

On the topic of Harrison, is it just me who thinks he's a thug? I'm not advocating for harsher rules on hard tackling - far from it - but he seems intent on injuring people sometimes. Those helmet hits earlier in the year against the Browns were sickening.

He's an excellent player and I'm not campaigning for his exclusion from the league by any means, I just thought the objections to his fines were ridiculous and unjustified.

heaton_mersey_boro Posted on 06/02/2011 19:16
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Thug may be a bit harsh, but his actions are "questionable". Tackles high frequently, which is pretty stupid as he's a marked man now.

Does come across as a petulant knóbhead like.

Pity 'cos he is one of the best LB's in the league.

LA_Boro Posted on 06/02/2011 19:16
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Pretty open.
Can't say I am a fan of the sexual predator but I would have Pittsburgh a slight favourite. It seems to have been forgotten that GB only squeaked into the playoffs and even after that Rogers had two great games but one indifferent one.

best make the most of it as well. A lockout to start next season is a foregone conclusion.

enigma17 Posted on 06/02/2011 19:27
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

0% chance of a lockout. The NFLPA will cave if needs be, no 2011 would hit the players just as bad as the communities.

I think they'll get it done amicably though. 18 game season, changes to revenue splits, rookie caps amongst other things can be expected.

doireboro Posted on 06/02/2011 20:05
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Green Bay's gonna win. They're a dome team that has to play outdoors. The turf in Cowboys stadium will be perfect for their speed and I think they'll be too quick.

As a Cowboys fan, I can't stand either of them but I'm gonna support GB tonite simply cause don't want the Steelers to get # 7.

Just hoping its a good game and not a blowout! [^]

7_The_Informer Posted on 06/02/2011 21:16
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

If I had money on this, it would be on the Packers, but, in reality, it comes down to the defences rather than the QBs. Will the Steel Curtain get at A-Rodg or will he be able to get out of the pocket and move around. Will Clay Matthews get at Big Ben? I think that the Packers are just too good.

Normally, I would say the Steelers, as they are an AFC team and I'm a huge Bills fan. I even wanted the Patsies to beat up on the Giants, but in the case the romanticism of the Packers will win me over.

The pre-match coverage started 2 hours ago here in the states but I haven't tuned in, got up and watched the Chelski game and now I'm watching the Eng-Aus 1-dayer from last night. Currently Eng on 130-6 and I may watch the rest on fast forward [:D]

Steelers by at least 10

They are the more complete team and they've been to the big game so many times in the past few years it's almost a regular season game for them.

I want the Packers to win but they ain't running on that Steelers D and though Mathews and co will get after Big Ben he's one of the few QBs who can handle it, if anything he gets even better.

Tbh I'm a little surprised that the Packers are being given the favourites tag considering the Steelers have the experience and the Packers stumbled into the play-offs.

The best stat I've seen concerns the players 38 Steelers have tasted a Super Bowl before, compared to 3 Packers. Not that I think Rodgers will get panicky.

I'm taking the Steelers to win, hopefully in an exciting game. Enjoy everyone[^][smi]

bill - the Steelers are very much the favourites....

UKLL... - don't worry about the Pack not being able to run it, they haven't run, or even tried to run on anybody this season. The Steelers run defence doesn't matter in this game (and it hasn't actually been great this year in any case).

Not what I've been reading the last few days, summed up by this link - loads of ESPN analysts etc giving their picks. Ice hockey programmes have been having polls coming out for the Packers.[cr]

None of which adds up for me, or you it seems. The Packers won't be running it much tonight, I agree. They need Rodgers and his receivers to have a good game, ALL game this time.

LA_Boro Posted on 06/02/2011 22:03
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

ok here's a couple of scenarios.

If the first overtime play results in a safety will the conceding team get a chance to kick off (for that matter what are the rules on trying to recover the ball at a free kick which is something you would never see in a normal game)

Or if the first ot kick off is recovered by the kicking team and then there is a field goal will the conceding team get a chance at their own onside kick ?

doireboro Posted on 06/02/2011 22:08
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

If there's a safety, the game is over and the team getting the safety wins.

I'm actually not too sure about the onside kick one though. Never really thought about that situation coming up! Good question.

bill - did you watch meet Sabres beat up on the Leafs last night? My mate who's a Leafs fan still hasn't returned my texts [:D]

Forgot to say that the best regular season hockey game I went to was a Sabres-Pens game about 3 years ago when we won 4-3. The game itself was awesome and I was in a private box going mental . The next day I met all the Bills players at a private function and the day after that, saw the Bills lose 10-3 to the niners in the worst NFL game I've ever seen. Loads of Niners fans there but they didn't seem to grasp my chant of "you're just a town full of rent boys", so I had to switch to "does your boyfriend know you're here" [:D]

LA_Boro Posted on 06/02/2011 22:15
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

sorry even then I got it wrong. They would not have to onside kick because they would be the receiving team still. Not only that but you could get a few penalties for excessive celebration or pitch invasion from players / coaches thinking the game was over.

Just read you are right about the safety though.

Think the half time tie, full time GB, or half time tie, full time Steelers at about 25/1 each bet is interesting value, could be level at the break, then you got 25/1 on either team.

Have also took the GB win by 7-12 points at 5/1, should be a decent game either way anyway, am not watching it on the BBC mind as I can't stand that lanky geek Jake Humprhey, what an irritating sod he is. [V]

I don't know anything about NFL, but I had a bit read today, as I'm quite interested in tonight's game.

Apparently, there's a QB for the Steelers who's really good, but 'cos he's a bit gropey, nobody likes him anymore, and there's some American journo who predicted prior to the season starting it would be these two teams contesting the Superbowl, and he's gone for a 33-27 Steelers win.

This is all I know.

doireboro Posted on 06/02/2011 22:25
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

Both QB's are very good. Big Ben (Steelers) has done it in big games more than the more untested Rodgers(GB) but I think Rodgers is the better overall QB.

Think it has a chance to be a great game though and thats all you can ask for now.

31-24 Packers I'll say.

7_The_Informer Posted on 06/02/2011 22:39
Cheeseheads v Steeler Nation

I think A-Rodg is clearly the better QB in terms of stats, but Big Ben has all the big-game experience but of course, there's only 1 way that A-Rodg can get that....

Starting to get warmed up for this game now....

7_The_Informer Posted on 06/02/2011 22:41

Should have given a pick - Packers by 7, maybe 24-17, but I'm also thinking 17-10....

EuropaParmo Posted on 06/02/2011 22:44

Steelers to win, hopefully it will go down to a final quarter drive to win the game. Maybe even overtime with their new rules for it. Keep things interesting.

To be honest, when the Colts went out, I would have been happy if anyone other than the Patriots or the Jets won the big game, so I'd just like it to be exciting.

Of course, but it's all about where you draw the line and the NFL is way too cautious for my liking. That one for me was right on the line...

What game are you watching?

Despite the fact his receivers can't catch a cold he is still the MVP so far

11 point game again.
Steelers may have missed their chance when the Packers were on the back foot

Cant see Steelers getting two touchdowns here, Packers have this won

2pt PATs are very 50:50 though, can't bank on it.

Congrats to doireboro for his prediction. He had 31-24, not realising they'd go for a 2 point conversion.

Congrats to the Pack - thoroughly deserved!!

Well done to GB. Had half their roster on IR at some stage, magnificent effort. [^]

Excellent Super Bowl in the end, Packers deserved it.

Steelers made it difficult for themselves with the interceptions but they almost got the comeback, they must be gutted.

Nice to see Rodgers lift the trophy though.[^]

As a 1st full SB I watched, could I have chosen a better game to watch?[^] I'm sure I could but it was still a brilliant game and loved it. Packers deserved win but there was a time when I thought the Steelers were going to do it.
Well done Packers [ref]
