Hard to see past 4 home wins and the Patriots as eventual winners although there always plenty of chokers once the playoffs start. Don't really have any favourites just want to see some close games and crazy finishes.

Hope the Steelers can beat the Ravens here, I want them to win the SB, though the Patriots do look the most likely team to make it.

Also wanting the Packers to win later tonight, but I'll be happy with two exciting games.

And that's all I have to contribute to the thread as I'll be watching about half an hour behind to begin with[V]

Hoping that the Steelers, Patsies, Packers and Seahawks win, with the Seahawks my only doubt in that list.

About to head off to an NHL game (Islanders-Sabres) so will watch for the next 20 minutes then watch both games on DVR tonight before heading to bed and will watch tomorrow's games live.

Monday is a holiday here (Martin Luther King Day), so will watch all tomorrow's footy then. Man - it's a busy weekend!! [:D]

Yep, completely agree with that sentiment but you can add Dallas, 49ers, Patsies and a host of others to that list.

I want the Steelers to win because I hate the way that the Browns "franchise" upped and left to a different city...

Want the Seahwaks as I've spent time in Seattle and my best mate supports the Bears [:D]

Want the Patsies to win as I hate the fcuking Jets (I live in the Jets heartland down in NY).

I want the Cheese-heads to win as Aaron Rodgers helped me win a few hundred bucks in a fantasy league this year [^]

Tomorrow will be interesting, the Seahawks already beat the Bears this year and they have all the momentum. Mind, all the smart money's on the bears.

As for the comparison between jets fans and Geordies then I would say that there are many similarities between the two, they both need a bl()()dy good kicking!!

Bradlee van Pelt, I think he got out of that quite well after saying the Patriots wouldn't come to England.[:D]

I don't know how true that is though, that they don't actually WANT to travel - if they're a visiting team and have no choice then they can't do much about it, but it could be the case that they don't actually want to.

I wouldn't, if I was them, all that travelling and disruption for one game.

7_The_Informer Posted on 17/01/2011 00:04
Official US Football playoffs thread

I'm pretty sure that both teams have to agree to going over to Blighty for the game. It does take a lot more than any normal game as even for a coast-to-coast trip, teams fly on the day before for the game. Going to London, there's a whole lot more PR that goes on as they try and promote the game, which doesn't happen in normal NFL games. The only comparable thing is the Bills-Toronto series where the Bills players go up and do a lot for that game, but there again, it is only a 2 hour drive!!

Ricard - I detest Marino, especially being a Bills fan. I got into the sport in '85 when we were crap and only chose them because of the name. Since that tim, been to lots of games, met all the players and stuff, had arguments with former HOF players on twitter ... [:D]

As for this game, Patsies need a score on this drive and then a stop!!

I have been to a college game in the US and i can say hands down its the best live game i have ever been to (apart from Boro Liverpool cup semi final)
But i can imagine if i went to a full season of American football i would feel like i got more for my money than most Football games i have been to.

I'd rather watch dominoes than American football. [^]

Bill, You're absolutely spot on my son. I'd rather play dominoes with a bunch of blind Cubans that watch that American Football shyte

Listen to Ricard78, he makes sense.

At least you've given it a try Ned. What do you think of ice hockey?

Ice hockey's watchable, even if it always seems somewhat artificial.

Hockey is the worst
Mrs LA lives in San Jose and got some (very expensive though fortunately free to her) tickets to the Sharks game thinking I liked all sports and I sat in a sulk the whole game and didn't even have beer (who wants to drinnk when they are cold).

dunno about freezing my bollox off watching it live. I've only seen it on TV.

How miserable can you get, sulking when you're given free tickets to the Shark Tank[:D]

well normally I would just have not gone but she had 6 tickets to take kids and hangers on so if I had to drive one of the cars otherwise she would have had to do two trips and it was p*ssing down and I am not that mean. It was shyte though

Fair enough if it's not your thing. I'd love to see some NHL games one day though.

i know this reply is a little "hoofish" but yesterdays bears game was fantastic...it was no boro semi-final experience but the whole tailgaiting experience was incredible. i had my first bloody mary at 8 then drank all the way to the kick off. i had so many layers on i felt like the michelin man. The atmosphere in the first qtr was intense. you should have seen some of the set ups before the game every car in the car park with bbq grills and fire pits (and i mean thousands of them) converted ambulances and school buses...it was similar to old school footy games, no kids just hords of guys lashed before 10am pi##ing up the side of my truck....great times...plus the packers next week...BRING ON THE CHEESE!!!

Personally I think the Bears are the team to beat now. They were excellent yesterday, Cutler was on fire, and it was a great game to watch too, and you can tell the atmosphere at Soldier field is spot on. [^]

can't look at the spread now (company where I work blocks all betting site - porn allowed though) but I would guess they are all pretty much even now.
You have to allow for the fact that Seattle only sneaked in from a division of no hopers.

How do you get tickets anyway hb - I 'm guessing its not a corporate freebie from your account

rodgers and the packers are an excellent team...but they just don't match up with the bears that well. Guaranteed the bears will let Rodgers do his thing, then they will punish his receivers. As a collective unit the bears defense are exceptional, they will give up yards but when it comes to the crunch they don't give up touchdowns. when a game is won they ease off, as they did yesterday and give up "garbage" points so as not to give any formations away to future co-ordinators

Packers 6/4
Steelers 23/10
Jets 10/3
Bears 5/1

I don' think the Bears will win but they would be the value bet there

i like those odds. If we get past the Pack, i'll be licking my chops with the Jets or the Steelers.
Bottom line, this will be a very ordinary Bears side to get this close

there aint any where i live...i have been threatening to take my 7 year old to a Chicago Fire game (but the slow tempo and latin american influence bores me). I still need to gently break the news to him that i actually didn't play for the Boro when i lived in England

It's a different game alright, especially when they play down here in Houston. The heat and humidity make it hard just to sit and watch.

hoosierboro Posted on 17/01/2011 22:08

the whole franchise experience rubs me the wrong way...the way the clubs are involved in printing flags/banners...it is so contrived. The mls just drops aclub in acity then all of a sudden you see fans crying in the stands after a play-off defeat....odd!

They're just copying off the crackpots on the telly.

I agree about the franchise lark, that goes for all sports and maybe is the reason for the college sports being more popular than their professional counterparts.

yeah...u hit the nail on the head, i had a workmate explain how people felt more connected to their college teams than pro teams....and you can see that in the catmosphere at college games and in their attendances. I live a stones throw from Notre Dame and i couldn't get a ticket for love nor money and they have a 60ish thousand stadium

I was at the Longhorns v. Baylor match a couple of months back, just under 110,000 there to watch what was one of the most boring sporting fixtures I've ever witnessed.

so if you win the play-offs in US do you get promoted to the super bowl league?

hoosierboro Posted on 17/01/2011 22:28
Official US Football playoffs thread

no, the nfl is divided into 2 conferences the afc and the nfc. the winner of each conference meet in the superbowl and thats it you do it all again next year. the teams who don't do well get first dibs on all the best young players coming out of college. Back in the early sixties i believe the nfl was played in a league setup, where the team who finnished top was the winner. The superbowl is a reletively new trophy

Played poker last night with a load of mates who were all supporting the Jets. Long night for me....

The Superbowl started as the "World Championship Game" between the winners of the National Football League (NFL) and American Football League (AFL). The 2 leagues merged 4 years later and the AFL became the AFC (AF Conference) and the NFL teams became the NFC....

Anyroad, I've been to a few footie games here, a couple of Red Bulls games and a Sounders-Crew game. The crowds at the different games couldn't have been more disparate. The NY games are attended by lots of hispanics and so on, really reflecting the diverse culture of New York and a lot of people who go to the games are 1st generation immigrants who grew up with the game in the "old" country and follow it here. Seattle was completely different - 60% of the crowd were college girls - it was great [^] But then things are bizarre in Seattle - they had no footy heritage at all and used to have a basketball team but the "franchise" moved away so they formed a footy team from scratch and just started supporting it. I hope that bit about Seattle is true, it was told to me by a Serbian limo driver on the way from my hotel to Seattle-Tacoma airport [:D] Anyroad, whatever the origin, they have taken it to heart and everywhere you go, you see Sounders gear in similar numbers to Seahawks and Mariners (and often more, depending on the area).

As for the NHL, I love it - can't get enough. It's fast paced, lots of shots on goal, fighting, immense skill. To me, it's the equivalent of footy back in England (because the standard of US footie is so shoite....).
